NY-Sen: Gillibrand gains in latest poll

by: devtob

Mon Nov 16, 2009 at 10:35:22 AM EST

Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand made substantial gains in the Siena Research Institute poll released today.

The poll found that Gillibrand still is unknown by many, with 43 percent having no opinion in the favorable/unfavorable question, but that her numbers improved on that question, and against possible Republican opponents.

Details, below.

devtob :: NY-Sen: Gillibrand gains in latest poll
Gillibrand's favorable/unfavorable is now 33/24, a jump of six points on the favorable and a drop of two points on the unfavorable, compared tp last month.

Her elect number is also 33, an increase of six points since the question was last asked in May.

The favorable and elect numbers are Gillibrand's highest since her appointment in January.

In a hypothetical contest with Rudy 9/11, Gillibrand now trails by 49-43, which is a dramatic improvement from 53-36 last month.

In a hypothetical contest with from Gov. George Pataki, Gillibrand also improved, now leading 45-44, compared to trailing 46-41 last month.

Gillibrand has been working hard around the state to become better known, and that is beginning to be reflected in this poll.

She still has a ways to go, but she's definitely headed in the right direction.

She also picked up three more important endorsements recently -- from the Human Rights Campaign, NY-7 Rep. Joe Crowley (who is also Queens County Democratic chairman), and the GLOW Democratic Coalition (representing Genesee, Livingston, Orleans and Wyoming counties upstate).

And she continues to have a progressive voting record in the Senate, and take leadership positions on DADT and children's nutrition.

Gillibrand's hard work, in D.C. and (4.00 / 2)
across the state, is starting to be reflected in the polls.

Early polls (4.00 / 3)
Two years out from the 2008 election, Rudy Giuliani and Hillary Clinton were runaway poll leaders.

The only reason Gillibrand is trailing Giuliani in the recent poll is that most New Yorkers haven't bothered to pay attention -- witness the 43% "no opinion" in the favorable/unfavorable poll.

Barring a complete meltdown, by September of 2010 Gillibrand's favorable rating will almost certainly be over 55%, probably over 60%, and she will be unbeatable.  Add to that the fact that her probable challenger is Rick Lazio (who has nothing to lose by becoming a "fool" who "rushes in"), and she gets 65%+ of the vote.

Unless the economy falls into a deep depression (highly unlikely), or Sen. Gillibrand is caught with a prostitue, this race is over.

lol! (4.00 / 2)
"or Sen. Gillibrand is caught with a prostitute"

That is also highly unlikely I think!

The better people know Gillibrand (4.00 / 1)
the more they like her. By constrast, the better people know Giuliani, the LESS they like him. (Ask Floridians.)

I'm not at all worried.

Not to mention... (4.00 / 1)
With Chuck Schumer and (most likely) Andrew Cuomo on the ticket pulling in 65%+ of the vote, Gillibrand should be safe riding their coattails.

Go Kirsten Go! (4.00 / 1)
For those of us who have been early supporters of Gillibrand--she was my district rep--I am not surprised by the rise in her poll numbers. The controversy surrounding her appointment, much of it generated by political opponents, was manufactured and distorted. I knew that she would use her indefatigable energy and commitment to work her way around the state, introducing herself to voters, and that it would bear fruit. She has done that and more, proposing legislation on many fronts, and leading courageously on issues like DADT, and now, fighting to reject the Stupak Amendment. As more people get to know the real person, and not a media caricature, she will continue to gain supporters.
