NY-SEN: Polling in the field for Harold Ford Jr?

by: Adama D. Brown

Tue Nov 24, 2009 at 17:23:25 PM EST

File this under "crazy things out of left field." A user on the forum DemocraticUnderground.com posted a message discussing a phone poll they had just recieved:

I live in NY and was just polled about a possible primary between Kirsten Gillabrand and Harold Ford Jr. for the Senate seat. I was wondering if anyone had heard if he was considering to run.

May I be the first to say, what the f***?

May I be the second WTF? (4.00 / 4)
Let's just say that when it comes to Democrats carpetbagging into NY for a Senate race, Harold Ford is no RFK or HRC.

Not even close.

BTW, new Zogby poll has Rudy 9/11 (4.00 / 1)
up by just 2, within the MOE.

Here's the link, courtesy of TPM.

I participated in a Zogby Interactive Poll (4.00 / 2)
on that race.  I know their Interactive Polls are ridiculously unreliable, but I'm signed up just so I can skew things towards my way of thinking...

[ Parent ]
At least in Tennessee, there's an excuse for his "centrism" (4.00 / 2)
not here

Maybe he is the Teabagger candidate (4.00 / 1)
and it was really a primary against Rudy they were asking about.

I say let Harold Ford run... (4.00 / 3)
And watch the whole "Gillibrand is conservative" go away as a result. It would strengthen her progressive credentials and would show her as a true progressive option to Ford, who is pro-life and not very much better on marriage equality (among many other issues).

Interesting thought process (0.00 / 0)
Personally, I think a black candidate from the right wing of the party could do very, very well against Gillibrand. He should be able to effectively consolidate the minority vote, while at the same time appealing to upstaters on their issues.

[ Parent ]
Conservative-leaning upstaters won't vote for a black guy. (0.00 / 0)
Even among many Democrats. We lost a hell of a lot of them last year compared to 2004 who wouldn't vote for Obama.

[ Parent ]
Not a good thing (0.00 / 0)
If Harold Ford runs, it means that Gillibrand can burnish her progressive credentials without actually going progressive.  If he doesn't run, then she has to earn it.

[ Parent ]
Is NY really so pathetic (4.00 / 2)
that we have to constantly import out-of-state Democratic candidates for Senate?

I think the answer is no, at least in this case.

And yes, I know he lives in NY now, but come on, really?  And to primary Gillibrand from the right?  New York is many things, but it's not a hotbed of DLC activism.  Fundraising, maybe.  Activism, not so much.

Well I get it, at least (0.00 / 0)
I'm certainly not excited about most of the crooks lawmakers who inhabit Albany ruining DC...
