The "evil eight" -- plus 30

by: Dan Jacoby

Wed Dec 02, 2009 at 15:05:08 PM EST

All 30 Republicans voted no on marriage equality, as did eight Democrats:  Addabbo, Aubertine, Diaz, Huntley, Kruger, Monserrate, Onorato, and Stachowski.

Now we know who the targets are next year.

Amen (4.00 / 4)
The silver lining of today's vote is we have a record now of who supports discrimination.  We will pound the pavement in these districts and make sure all of their constituents know the type of Senator they have.

"Never be afraid to stand with the minority when the minority is right, for the minority which is right will one day be the majority."

-William Jennings Bryan

So who among the evil 8 (0.00 / 0)
has declared primary challengers (that support marriage equality, I should add).

Possible challengers (0.00 / 0)
Among the Democrats, it's virtually certain that Monserrate will be ousted by Jose Peralta, Sen. Onorato will have a challenger (details to be released later), and Joe Addabbo may have to face a young, bright, personable Republican (which could explain why he reneged on a campaign promise he made).

I think Aubertine and Kruger are safe.  Huntley is probably safe, merely because there aren't many people in that district who knows what the state Senate is.

Diaz may be safe, if only because his son is the county leader, but there will probably be a challenge.

Stachowski is, I believe, the longest-serving Democrat in the state Senate.  I don't know that part of the state, so I don't know if there is a potential challenger.

Thanks, I'm still processing this (0.00 / 0)
loss. When I regroup, you can bet I'll be seeing who's vulnerable, but Dem & GOP, and work to move the ball forward for next years vote.

[ Parent ]
Absolutely (0.00 / 0)
We all need a breather after the heartbreaking vote but then we have to get back in the game and challenge these bastards and pound the pavement in the hearts of their districts.

Onorato challenger (4.00 / 1)
I have heard that either Mike Gianaris or Eric Gioia might challenge Onorato, either of whom would make me very happy.  I proudly voted for Gioia for NYC Public Advocate, and would love to help him oust George Onorato next year.  Anybody know of any possible truth to this?

Rumors (4.00 / 1)
I've heard rumors that Stachowski will get primaried, but not over the ME vote. He narrowly escaped losing in 2008 and took a lot of DSCC resources to hold on to his seat, so I'm sure the party structure isn't thrilled with him. Then he got sacrificed in January so Kruger could be Finance Committee chair, and his whole election had been about keeping him in office meant the Buffalo area would have this all-powerful committee chair.  When that went up in smoke, I think people started to think about whether or not his seniority was any advantage to the area after all.

[ Parent ]
I've heard retirement, not primary (4.00 / 1)
The problem with this one is that this district includes effectively all of Steve Pigeon's power base, and quite frankly I'd rather have a Republican who votes against every issue I believe in than a Pigeon-"Democrat" who is so corrupt that it makes me bleed from my eyeballs, and I think there is a good chance that anyone who replaces Stach will be the latter.

[ Parent ]
Addabbo was threatened by the churches (4.00 / 1)
he told me personally back in February he was a yes vote. I tried to track him down this afternoon, but someone in the county Dems told me he decided to vote no after last month's election when his former chief of staff was badly defeated in the race for his old council seat. The churches in the district threatened Joe and since his political base are Italian Catholics in conservative Howard Beach, the rest is history.

[ Parent ]
Hm (0.00 / 0)
Addabbo shouldn't have gotten spooked by Gulluscio's loss; Frank Gulluscio was not a good candidate, and he was up against a very personable young Republican incumbent.

Speaking of the personable young Republican, there is a possibility that he will challenge Addabbo next year -- and he's also Catholic.

[ Parent ]
That possibility (0.00 / 0)
was entirely based on his vote on this bill.

[ Parent ]
very disappointed (0.00 / 0)
Frankly I hoped as one of senators said that you would beat Jersey today. At least there is plenty to build on if that is any consolation, which I doubt it is.

We've got some work ahead of us.

If marriage equality is your issue - (0.00 / 0)
There were 30 Republican no votes.  That is all of them. Each and every Republican, no exceptions.

There's your target.

True (4.00 / 1)
BUT, ousting these clowns is way over due. Some use the excuse to vote FOR discrimination because they don't want to lose their seat by standing up for what's right. The only time people lose their seat over such issues is when they vote against equality - it's time to show them the door.

Tax the Church.

[ Parent ]
So bring 'em on. (4.00 / 2)
30's a big lot, how about we narrow it down to the 5 or 10 most vulnerable GOPers?

[ Parent ]
Yes and no John... (4.00 / 1)
I would rather address the seven senators who hail from Democratic districts who voted against a Democratic bill. I believe in making sure our own house is clean before addressing the rundown house that is the state Republican Party. We need to tear them down, but before we do that, we need to primary these seven who think they can get away with voting against Democrats in Democratic districts.

Support our troops, not the war.

Disgraceful (4.00 / 2)
The "Evil 8" are a disgrace to the Democratic Party and all New York progressives. Help defeat them by donating to www.ReBootNY.com
Let's start electing real progressives to state government - this means you Kruger...#1 on my list.

Tax the Church.

The ignorance (0.00 / 0)
shown by some of the commenters (on CapCom, etc.) is just so very frustrating.  I find it hard to believe people can be so stupid on this issue.  The ingrained hatred really is unfathomable to me...

New Yorkers against Harold Ford

DeFrancisco (4.00 / 2)
DeFrancisco will be out. I don't care who they field, I'm running against him next year. No longer am I going to let a person represent a people he does not treat the same as the rest. If I go alone, I go alone. If I go with others, I'll go with others. No longer will the gay community in CNY tolerate it. Let me know if you're interested, I'm going to need help.

If you're serious (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure you'll get some help from TAP folks.

Please (4.00 / 1)
I wasn't surprised by that scumbag's vote, but he's gotta go. (Unfortunately, I no longer live in his district, out by about a dozen blocks)
