Replacing Monserrate with another Espada?

by: NYBri

Wed Dec 09, 2009 at 16:34:22 PM EST

According to the Daily News,

Queens Assemblyman Jose Peralta landed more than $500,000 in taxpayer money for a nonprofit that never filed federal tax records, has no employees and has been inactive for more than two years.

Peralta is the Queens Democratic machine's choice to primary Senator Hiram Monserrate in September, if he's not removed from office by the Senate before then.

The article outlines activities on the part of Peralta that sound very similar to Senator Pedro Espada's request for $2 million in Member Items for non-profits that had no address or staff or, well, much of anything except ties to Espada's friends and family.

One of the reasons for Espada's participation in the coup this past summer was the fact that the Democratic leadership essentially told him jump in a lake about the requests...so he went somewhere else to get the money...like Dean Skelos. (Ever wonder what was on tap for the Senate on the day of the coup? It was approval of the Member Items distribution that didn't include Pedro's request.)

Just what we need in the Senate. Another Pedro.

Again, why should we support the state party? (4.00 / 1)
If all that's going to happen is we elect more corrupt people in the Pedro Espada mold?  Not me.  No way.

I don't see what this particular case... (4.00 / 1)
Has to do with the state party. The Queens Democratic Party picked this guy. If anything, we should be questioning the Queens Democratic Party.

I have my criticisms of the state, but sometimes we have to hold individuals and not groups accountable for their actions. Peralta is running as the anti-Monserrate candidate. He has made that clear. Criticizing the state party is another issue for another discussion.

Who should we support then? (0.00 / 0)
Should we just drop out of politics altogether?

I think Steaming Pile... (4.00 / 1)
Is on an anti-state party tirade, but I also believe we should support individual candidates who support our values.

After all, when is the last time you saw the Democratic Party or any of its leaders actually stand for something? It's been awhile.

Support progressive values (0.00 / 0)
I agree, Robert. If the individual candiadte holds progressive ideas and values, support should be given regardless of state or local Party organization endorsement(s).
In the case of Assemblyman Peralta, the questions about his "non-profit" dealings are troubling and closely resemble the problems Senator Espada faced last Spring.
I would hardly hold up Espada as the face of NY progressives, and am leary of throwing my support behind Peralta.
Monserrate has to go, but in the desire to get rid of him, Dems should not be so eager to focus on the quick fix - it just may make matters worse.

Tax the Church.

You can't talk about the "state party" like it's all one thing. (4.00 / 2)
That's like describing the federal government as either completely bad, or completely good. The NYS Dem Party is made up of a lot of different chunks, and the most potent when it comes to things like this is the county parties. Most of the time they make the decisions about who gets to run for state leg offices, assuming there's more than one person interested.
