End of the Year Poll: Who Was the Worst Albany Embarrassment of 2009?

by: Roatti

Tue Dec 22, 2009 at 16:03:07 PM EST

I thought it would be nice to start an annual tradition around here, a vote where TAP readers can decide who most epitomized the state of downright shame our state government found itself in during the past year. I know there are other politicians in NY who deserve to be on this list, but for the purposes of fairness, it is limited to members of the State government only.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the nominees:

  • David Paterson, for showing that everything he ever said about reform and transparency over his 30-year career were bald-faced lies.

  • "Uncle Joe" Bruno, for being convicted of selling the power of his office to the highest bidders.

  • Dean Skelos and his Republican conference for refusing to abide by the will of the voters and accept the fact that they are indeed in the minority and also being too cowardly to give a single reason why every last one of them voted against marriage equality.
  •
  • The "Gang of Four," who refused to abide by the will of the voters and decided to get the highest price possible for their party allegiance.
  •
  • Ruben Diaz Sr. and the "Hate Eight", the eight Democrats who voted against Marriage Equality and thus tipping the balance against its passage.
  •
  • Pedro Espada, for, among other things, attempting to sell his party allegiance for pork to supply his "charity" with state funds, believing that campaign finance laws don't apply to him, and not even living in the district he represents.

  • Hiram Monserratte for likely slashing his girlfriend but avoiding a felony conviction because she perjured herself.  He also was in the gang of four and the hate eight.
  •
  • Shelly Silver, for continuing to stonewall ethics reform, year after year.
  •
  • Greg Ball for using the worst tactics of the teabagging right to manufacture outrage against Health Care Reform.

  • Jim Tedisco for thinking a seat in congress was his birthright and not something that merited having actual policy positions or concerns about the people of his district.
  • Poll after the fold, voting will end Dec 30th.

    Alternate List? (4.00 / 3)
Can we make a list of TAP Heroes?

It would be quite a short list among NY pols n/t (4.00 / 3)

    [ Parent ]
    Why would folks... (4.00 / 1)
...want to take the high road when the low road is much more familiar?

    [ Parent ]
    U should make one (4.00 / 2)
But it will be short... All I can think of off the top of my head are Andrew Cuomo and Dan Squadron

    [ Parent ]
of course BRUNO wins BUT (4.00 / 4)
... lets not overlook this news:

Another One Bites the Dust - Schadenfreude Edition  http://www.dailykos.com/story/...
    (another Brooks Brothers Mafia alumnus)
May all these election crooks and corrupt politicians rot in jail. What a good New Year that would be.

Why isn't there a choice for "all of the above" or do you want (4.00 / 6)
us to think hard & decide???

    HylasBrook

    [ Parent ]
    I Thought The Same Thing Hylas (4.00 / 2)
We should be able to vote "all of the above."

    [ Parent ]
    No contest. (4.00 / 5)
Please. Espada is the personification of everything wrong with this state.

    The Gang of Four (4.00 / 4)
became the Gang of Two, and completely screwed up the Senate.

    And not just in June.

    GREAT tradition (4.00 / 6)
This year, we have such a line-up it is hard to decide (although, I have to side with am above on this...).  Here's to hopes for a new year with fewer nominees.

    Some more names... (4.00 / 5)
Surely there are others who deserve to be on the list:

    Tom Golisano (funding the coup)
    Roger Stone (a perennial favorite)
The "pizza stain" judge (and associated Republican lawyers)
    Keven Parker (assaulting journalists)

But why limit ourselves just to Albany?  For instance, in my view Caroline Kennedy deserves to be on the list too; her one-day "tour" of upstate alone was pretty embarrassing.

    C.K. - not criminal... at least not illegal n/t (4.00 / 3)

    [ Parent ]
Golisano should be in prison. (4.00 / 4)
Here's hoping him and Pigeon share a cell in 2010

    [ Parent ]
How about you learn how to spell embarassment? (0.00 / 0)

    "Embarrassment" (4.00 / 1)
    Spelling and call-out fail.

    [ Parent ]
    Whoops (4.00 / 2)
    that's ironic

    [ Parent ]
    Define worst. (4.00 / 6)
    Cringe-inducing embarrassment - Paterson, Silver
Actual damage done - Gang of four, Hate Eight
    Greg Ball - rightwing douchebaggery

Dishonorable personal mention: Ruben Diaz senior, Pedro Espada, for neatly encapsulating everything that is wrong with this state in general and the Senate in particular.

I agree but would bump up Espada (4.00 / 2)
His correct vote on marriage equality still doesn't give him a pass for the shit he pulled.

    [ Parent ]
    I didn't say (4.00 / 2)
that it did. But pointing out the sheer vast extent extent of his douchebaggery at this point seems a bit like gilding the lily.

Then again, just to show how worthwhile our Dems are, they did make him Majority Leader, god help us.

    [ Parent ]
How did the Senate Dem leadership not make the list? (4.00 / 6)
They certainly deserve a special award for making a complete hash out of one of the best opportunities Democrats have had in a very long time.

This was easy for me. (4.00 / 5)
Pedro Espada and everyone who created that mess.

Joe Bruno, I knew about.  Tedisco, I get it.  Monserratte, bad and happens too often.

That really bizarre thing with Espada was waaaaaaaay over the top, and made me better understand why Republicans were in charge -- because Democrats aren't capable.

    Incompetent predictable (4.00 / 2)
The comedy of the absurd was easily foreseeable.

    [ Parent ]
    Easy: Phil Anderson (4.00 / 1)
For getting taken by two conservative operatives in these very pages.  And he still doesn't realize it.  Needs a Gordon Ramsey kick in the balls.  HINT:  Know your loal restaurant decor.

    Who Cares? (4.00 / 2)
Let the Republicans talk. Sometimes they've got something valid to say. Doesn't the party platform officially endorse ending unfunded mandates, eliminating corrupt programs, increased money for highway improvements, and ending pork barrel spending? We'll line up behind the Republicans on all of those things, if they're actually serious about it this time.

    [ Parent ]
    there still (4.00 / 1)
there still some that not included in your list..

    Make the catchiest choice! (4.00 / 2)
    Vote for Pedro!!!

(unless you live in the Bronx and its September 2010)

    How about Scott Murphy... (4.00 / 1)
...Mr. "I support the public option and coverage mandate, but voted against extending health insurance to millions because of two obscure taxes that rubbed me the wrong way."

Stabbed us all in the back. Make up your mind, Murphy.

    DP's Performance and A Modest Proposal (4.00 / 2)
As a Governor DP has always reminded me of an adult trying to play a video driving game -- it is nothing but crashes -- going in the wrong direction and then all kinds of feeble excuses for the sorry performance.

My favorite DP lie is that idiotic advert in which he blathers on about asking labor unions to cut their pay and share in the pain.  Oh yeah -- what is left unsaid is that DP, like a drunken sailor, went on a Second Floor hiring and give 'em huge pay increases scheme; it was like he was running Goldman Sachs or channeling Bernie Madoff.  After his outrageously hypocritical behavior was exposed -- DP did a "180 degree -- ah shucks piece of schtick" and promptly shut up.  This act was after a succession or embarrassingly inept acts too lengthy to list -- remember the 40k for carpets!

I was so hopeful when DP took office.  As I watched the State of the State --  the energy in the room seemed to jump off the screen!  A few weeks before the SoS -- an Albany insider said to me: "He does not have the work ethic, discipline or knowledge to govern."  I thought it was sour grapes -- but DP's term has been one disaster after another.

    Abiit, excessit, evasit, erupit

IMHO if we want a conservative running the Governor's Mansion -- we might as well elect Jeanine Pirro http://www.nytimes.com/2009/12...  and as a twofer we'd get Wilbur the pot bellied pig to run the Second Floor plus Dartina the poodle could replace the current set of staffers - saving the taxpayers tons of money.  JP could keep her TV show and turn Wilbur loose on Roger Stone's plan for the state --  make us into a nondescript southern state in which the rich pay few if any taxes, there are no unions, we'd have a gun shop on every corner, crime and violence levels would soar, dismantle  the public education system, eliminate welfare etc. -- all to the tune of "Petticoat Junction or Green Acres"  -- instead of "NY NY."

While we're at it we can change the our State's slogan of "Excelsior" to "Abiit, excessit, evasit, erupit" [He left, absconded, escaped and disappeared].

Michael Bloomberg is worthy of mention, too... (4.00 / 2)
...after all...to me he epitomizes that arrogance of New York politics...by thinking that laws don't apply to him (they merely need to be change for his convenience by throwing massive quantities at people to change them for his own personal benefit (i.e. to allow him to run again))...and that it's okay to just go around purchasing quaint little things like...mayorships for yourself. But, most importantly of all, Bloomberg demonstrates that not only can you go around trying to purchase political offices, changing laws for personal benefit, tossing massive quantities of money around to bully your way around (i.e. legalized bribery and coercion).

Bloomberg is a megalomania who, apparently thinks that New York City...and the world...cannot survive without him so...he, therefore, can do whatever they hell he wants to maintain power. Bruno, Silver and the rest of those folks are just a bunch of punks compared to him.

    oops (4.00 / 3)
...forgot to finish my thought in paragraph one...

"Bloomerg dmeonstrats that not only can you go around trying to purchase political offices..." but if you throw enough money around...the voters will let you get away with anything you want, proving once again that, in politics, the only thing that really counts is...money.
