The Clarion Call for 2010: Draft Lilliam

by: Roatti

It appears that the clubhouse known as the Bronx Democratic Party is going to tie its fortunes to the pathetic embarrassment otherwise known as Pedro Espada:
Bronx Democrats, Potential Candidates Back Off Espada Challenge

The Bronx Democratic Party, focused on refilling its depleted campaign coffers and coalescing around new leader Carl Heastie, has hinted that it will either sit out Espada's race next year or even go so far as to back the feisty majority leader.

"So far, Espada's been pretty decent," one party source said. "I'm not so sure you're going to find anyone willing to go up against him."

(snip)

Another hint that the Bronx organization will most likely pass on challenging Espada is the Bronx senator's close relationship with party consigliore Stanley Schlein, who represented Espada during the summer leadership negotiations. Although the two have had a volatile relationship, punctuated by a fistfight at the Bronx offices of the Board of Elections several years ago, some Bronx watchers assume that Schlein and Espada's renewed alliance will curtail any potential party-backed challenges.

This is unacceptable.  The Bronx Democratic party has long had a reputation for being a cesspool of corruption, backroom deals, and clubhouse politics, so it's not surprising that they would support a slimeball like Espada for no other reason than to benefit from the largesse he has embezzled from the state treasury.

Schneiderman staffer Lilliam Perez expressed interest in challenging Espada a few months ago, but has since backed off making a clear commitment.  Perhaps she would be more inclined to run if she knew she could count on the support of the progressive blogosphere.  So what do you all think?  Should we draft Lilliam?

I'd love to see this happen (4.00 / 3)
But it really doesn't seem like she's going to jump in.  Usually a successful draft movement convinces someone on the fence, but my understanding is that Lilliam is not interested.

I mean, here's her quote from that article you linked to:

"Lilliam Perez, chief of staff to State Sen. Eric Schneiderman, floated the possibility of her candidacy in the fall, telling a Columbia Journalism School newspaper, "this is not about whether I want to run. ... If I am the one who has the best chance of beating him, I have no choice."

But she has since stepped back. "I said some people wanted me to run and that I was very upset at the time since I was interviewed the week of the coup," Perez wrote in an e-mail. "At the moment, I am not running for office.""

But hey, if we think that we can push her in on the basis of her having no choice, that would be great.  But I just don't see it happening.

Yeah (4.00 / 3)
but I think it's at least worth trying.  We can't give Pedro a free pass.

[ Parent ]
I agree, but (4.00 / 3)
it's not up to us, few of whom live in the district.

If a decent candidate with some backers in the district primaries Espada, he/she will get lots of support outside the district.

WFP and union support will be vital, but so will support and enthusiasm from people in the 33rd SD who are fed up with Espada.

[ Parent ]
WFP is key (4.00 / 2)
we should try to reach out to them

[ Parent ]
Wish I could say I'm surprised. (4.00 / 2)
But I'm not. The Senate Dems are politically catastrophically inept - cf. walking into Skelos' knife in re: marriage equality - and almost as venal as the republicans they replaced. Equal division of resources between majority and minority - what ever happened to that?

I've been hearing for months that Espada had a huge target on his back. Guess not - what a shocker.

The best this state can hope for is that we get a new governor to sweep out the pigsty of the legislature. If, that is, it's even still possible, which is debatable at best.

Well, I'd think you should ask first (4.00 / 5)
My experience getting reluctant candidates to run (admittedly, for lower offices than this...) is that it is best to speak with them privately, off the record, before "pushing" the idea publicly.  Call her up next week and ask.

Also, is there a community grassroots group of some sort that might know other local leaders who might be good?  If the Bronx Dem Committee is not doing its job and recruiting good candidates, rank and file Dems in the district should do so.

There are a few things like that starting to happen in the Bronx (4.00 / 1)
but it's still in its infancy.

[ Parent ]
I know some people who know Lilliam (4.00 / 2)
We should def try this approach.

[ Parent ]
This is true, Robinia (4.00 / 2)
But a little chatter can inspire those close to her.

[ Parent ]
With Espada voting yes on Marriage Equality a lot of attention is shifting to (4.00 / 1)
the likes of Monserrate and Oronato where more progressive social Democrats are interested in challenging the bad Democratic incumbents. If we defeat three more Republicans this November the ability for Espada to embarrass anymore fades away.

His vote on Marriage should not give him a free pass (4.00 / 2)
just that he even draws a state salary is an embarrassment and should be changed

[ Parent ]
Pedro must go (4.00 / 3)
Monserrate and Onorato are toast; even the marriage equality folks will evenatually shift their focus to other races, such as backing Brian Foley and whoever challenges Shirley Huntley, and then backing pro-equality challengers to Republicans.  Off the top of my head, Johnson (Owen, not Craig), Marcellino, Padavan, Greg Ball (who will be running for Leibell's seat) come to mind.

Meanwhile, the problem of Pedro still looms, and while rendering him irrelevant is definitely a strategy that should be looked at, rendering him unemployed not only solves that problem but also sends a message to any potential future troublemakers to watch out.

And a note -- by troublemakers I don't mean people who challenge the status quo (they're needed, always), but people who cause trouble merely for their own personal aggrandizement and profit.

[ Parent ]
I suspect she wants to stick with Schneiderman (4.00 / 2)
As he prepares to run for AG.  Can't say I blame her - he's got a good shot at it.  But Espada needs a strong challenge.  And Lilliam is the best potential candidate I know of.  So count me in.

and Liliam would not only be a strong candidate (4.00 / 2)
she'd also be a great Senator.

[ Parent ]
A challenger... (0.00 / 0)
I heard some rumors of a strong challenger against Espada. I'm excited, hope that its a REAL progressive candidate whom does not partake in politics as usual. I will get back with more information soon.
