The correct way to frame Harold Ford

by: Amherst Guy

You can't run on everything. Here's what will work:

Merrill Lynch/Bank of America Vice Chairman and NRA member Harold Ford Jr. is out of touch with the hard-working Democrats in New York. Ford, who is driven to work every day in a chauffeured car paid for by General Electric, has a helicopter as a primary mode of transportation, at a time when many New Yorkers cant even afford to fix their clunker or take the Subway.

Ford, a lifelong resident of Tennessee, is against women's reproductive rights, opposes health care and banking reform, and wants police officers to spend their valuable time chasing down Mexicans rather than investigating murders. He is out of touch with New York, out of touch with the middle class, and out of touch with the Democratic Party.

This is interesting, BTdubs.

Mr. Ford has repeatedly described himself as "pro-life," and has voted to ban a procedure opponents call partial-birth abortions and to require that minors receive parental consent before receiving an abortion.

In the interview, however, he said: "To describe me as pro-life is just wrong. I am personally pro-choice and legislatively pro-choice."

Explaining the previous remarks, he said he refused to cede "the language of life" to the political right. Mr. Ford said that he had always supported abortion rights, but that when he campaigned in Tennessee, he used the phrase "pro-life" more broadly to highlight what he saw as the hypocrisy of Republican policies that denied benefits to returning war veterans, or equal pay to National Guardsmen.

and

He still has a Tennessee driver's license.

from The New York Times

Once again, I like Harold Ford Jr. A lot. But I don't want him as my Senator unless I'm living in a state that still refers to 7Up as "Coke".

I think Ford managed to destroy himself today (4.00 / 3)
In fact, after I wrote that subject line, I found Gawker's take on today's New York Times interview:

New York Times Allows Harold Ford to Destroy Himself

Ford talks about how the Giants are his favorite team (because he's friends with the owner), he likes his pedicures, and breakfast at the Park Regency Hotel every morning, doesn't take the subway, but rather cars and taxis, and though he's never visited the outerboroughs, he has seen them from his helicopter ride with Ray Kelly. (But his helicopter did land once in Staten Island.)

"I can see Brooklyn from my helicopter!"

Ring a bell? From Talking Points Memo, to Daily Kos, people all across the blogosphere are howling at how awful and clueless he comes off. He couldn't come across as more tone-deaf or out of touch if he tried. It's like performance art.

I also think that that was not a good interview (4.00 / 1)
I give him a lot of credit for being a straight shooter about those things rather than dodging, but I kind of wonder why he chose not to dodge. He knows he needs to win a primary, right?

This entire interview makes no sense if he is planning o primary Gillibrand.

It makes me wonder if Gillibrand isn't planning on running and she told only fellow Blue Dog Harold Ford so that the field clears before him. Too far fetched a conspiracy theory?

Too far fetched, I'd say (0.00 / 0)
from a dkos diary, source to a "DC insider" friend of the author
Srsly: look what brah is up against:
schumer - next senate majority leader
pelosi - ran against her for house leader and lost big time
obama - what more need be said?
no establishment in new york.
no heavyweights in washington.
that being said, he does have a history of making political errors. this could be one more.

can't vouch for the sources' credentials, but his assessment rings true.

I can see the headline now: (4.00 / 7)
