NY-Sen: A new benchmark for self-parody.

I have to admit, I've been operating under the assumption that Harold Ford's press people are the same beltway-insider grossly overpriced consultant types that typically attach themselves to campaigns where the candidate's ego and pocketbook trump strategic sense. After all, anyone with a sense of honesty and an IQ greater than that of a fencepost could have told him that his campaign rollout was not going smoothly.

But apparently the consultants do know enough at least to recognize that his interview with the New York Times, despite the Times being friendly to him, still turned into an unmitigated clusterfuck.

The obvious solution would be to talk to the candidate, get some kind of message going, and determine whether the candidate's beliefs really fit the constituency.

Oh wait, silly me. That would be the right thing to do. No, in the world of overpaid political consultants with a win/loss record worse than the Buffalo Bills, the solution is simply to not talk about the issues.

From Edsel's latest interview in the NY Daily News, emphasis mine:

The interview - granted under the condition that the questions be limited to his rationale for running, and not issues - comes at the end of a rocky first week of buzz surrounding his potential candidacy.

Then Edsel has the actual brass to say this:

"This race isn't about feet, it's about issues," he said of ribbing he has taken on the web and elsewhere of his regular pedicures.

There can be only one response to this.

You mean the issues you refuse to discuss? I can understand your impulse--if I possessed your deeply held religious beliefs that abortion is evil, that gay people are second class citizens, and your support for unlimited bank bailouts and a downright Ayn Rand style system of non-taxation for the ultra-wealthy, I wouldn't want to admit to those things either.

But Harold, that black cloud of doom that's hanging over the head of your still unannounced campaign? That's not going away any time soon, and this sudden swerve in strategy just adds to the feeling that some of us are familiar with when we see a campaign in crash-and-burn mode. Except that your campaign didn't even get off the runway: it caught fire in the hanger.

That's actually a very, very meaty topic (4.00 / 2)
limited to his rationale for running,

I would encourage him to speak at great length on this topic. I would be very interested to hear it. With a left-centrist Democrat sitting, and a progress left candidate challenging her, and, probably a somewhat moderate Republican challenging her in the general, is the rational?! What does Ford bring to the table, that is not already offered by people who actually voted in NY state in Nov 2008?

Ford is hoping the primary will not be about issues, (4.00 / 1)
and all about "independence."

As if the candidate recruited and funded by Bloomberg and Wall Street could ever be independent of his benefactors.

Ford knows that his conservative issues positions will not go over well with primary or general election voters.

So, he naturally doesn't want to talk about issues, and the Daily News shamefully goes along.

Not fair to the Bills (4.00 / 2)
The Bills did get to the Super Bowl four years in a row.  Of course, they lost all four, but still...

I keep telling youse guys..... (4.00 / 1)
Ford is an edsel...

As he has never actually visited upstate.... (4.00 / 3)
..he is probably unfamiliar with the famous "voting with their feet" issue.  Yeah, actually, this election is, among other things, about feet.  If you want to run on them, you need to quit pampering them and start wearing out the shoe leather.  When were you visiting the rural areas, Ford?  Or, did you just plan to interview with more of your NYC paper buddies about your precious motivations?

Ford reminds me of 1998 and Vermont's Fred Tuttle's (0.00 / 0)
primary run against a self-funded millionaire that just had a second home in VT.  The guy probably thought it would be easier to run as a Republican in Vermont than in MA.

The 2 had a debate & Tuttle destroyed the out of state candidate by asking "How many teats on a Holstein cow?"

The guy didn't know & that pretty much destroy McMullen's candidacy.  Ford would run into the same problem upstate.

Do you know how many teats on a Holstein cow without looking it up in Wikipedia?

Courting Sharpton (4.00 / 1)
What's with Sharpton?  He previously endorsed Gillibrand but at today's MLK Memorial he had Ford sitting in the first row and Gillibrand behind him and he then took Ford to another MLK event in Mt Vernon.

Opportunists of a feather stick together (4.00 / 1)
