Somebody save us from "businessman politicians."

I'm not sure, is it a requirement that to go from being a business executive to a politician, you need to get your brains stirred with a hot poker or something? Or is it simply that only the dumbest (and usually failed) businessmen decide to go into politics and run entirely on the platform of being a former businessman?

There's plenty of examples, but the most obvious recent one is Chris Collins. At the Governor's State of the State address recently, Collins showed up and sat down in a seat being held by Assemblyman Joseph Errigo (R-Henrietta). What happens next I'll leave to the WKBW article to describe.

Assemblyman Errigo says he's never had anything against Collins before this incident. Errigo would not identify the woman involved because he says he's concerned there could be repercussions for her. Errigo tells Eyewitness News he was saving a seat for the woman but she was late, so when Collins arrived he took the seat that was being saved. When the woman eventually arrived that's when the Assemblyman says Collins made the inappropriate comment.

"She comes up the aisle and now this is a very crowded situation here and so she looked at me and said, 'I thought you were going to save me a seat,' and I said, 'Well, I told you to get here earlier,' and he (Collins) says, 'If you want this seat you have to give me a lap dance'," says Errigo.

"If you want this seat you have to give me a lap dance." Yup, that came out of the mouth of the Erie County Executive, a man who wants to be Governor. In public, to a respected--as well as, apparently, wealthy and powerful--member of the Erie County community who is well known for throwing around political contributions.

I swear to God I couldn't make this stuff up if I tried.

As with Collins' previous gaffe, he is fortunately being called out on it by decent members of his own party--including Errigo, who was one of a number of people to attest to how offended the woman was at the comment. Unlike Collins' previous gaffe, he's not apologizing, instead trying to describe the media accounts as having been "fictionalized." Which is a far cry from saying "No, I didn't make a completely inappropriate and public remark to this woman about a lap dance."

Collins is just the latest example of what looks increasingly like a trend: morons leaving the business world for the world of politics. First there was Bush, who apparently convinced all the idiots whose wallets outweighed their brains that they could do it too, so long as they grinned enough and had good hair. At least to his credit, Bush didn't publicly joke about getting corporate executives to strip for him. Even he wasn't that gaffe prone.

Now we've got Collins, and our other blight on the region, Chris Lee, who continues to demonstrate on a near daily basis that he's either an idiot or intellectually dishonest. I'm going to go with idiot. Not to mention incapable of math.

Somebody save us from "good ol' boys" who think that their country-club grin makes them qualified to be leaders.

As far as Lee goes (4.00 / 1)
I think "Wishy-washy", "Flip-fopper" and "Political opportunist" are the right descriptions.

Speaking of Lee, its late January and to my knowledge no one I've ever heard of is even sniffing around. I assume at this point we're putting up a sacrificial lamb? Have you heard anything? Robert, have you?

It's no secret that recruitment isn't going so well at the moment. (0.00 / 0)
There's a lot of reasons for that. First and foremost, our top candidates are all either recusing themselves from electoral politics due to other jobs, or have their eyes on other offices in the near future. We've been investigating other candidates, but all of them so far have been uninterested or have fatal flaws.

Second, there seems to be an underlying assumption by some people that this district is getting deleted after the census. I don't consider that likely at all, given the logistics of how exactly you have to draw the districts to avoid, say, killing Massa next door.

Third, we're not exactly getting a lot of fire support out here, since the larger organizations that should be interested are all distracted with other things.

We're not giving up yet, but it's very frustrating right now.

If Chris Lee (0.00 / 0)
is still the congressman and the Dems win the Senate, disappearr might not be accurate but it sure wont be like it is now. It will be a good bit dem-ier. If a dem wins and the dems win in the Senate, I picture this district adding a lot more Ds, at the expense of Massa and Slaughter, who will then take even more Ds from Massa. If the Reps control the senate, this district will lose more of Erie and Niagara Counties (probably most if not all of Amherst, currently 1/6 of the district and 1/4 of the Dems) and no Dem will be able to win it.

My amateur analysis. But If the Dems hold the Senate, the future outlook is bright for residents in NY-26. Hence, if we find a top candidate in Amherst, Clarence or Genesee County, I'd rather run them for State Senate 61 for now to help ensure a majority for redistricting then run them for congress in 2012. Maybe that's your sales pitch.

No, it won't be like it is now. But I'm not confident waiting for redistricting. (0.00 / 0)
Looking at the ground-level redistricting data, the most that you can realistically make this district without killing one of the neighbors is 54/46 Dem, based on 2008 voting data. That would be a reasonably fair district to run in, but frankly I'm not sure that it would be enough of a margin to bump off Lee if he manages to get entrenched here over the next 2+ years. All he needs is a few points worth of moderate Dems or independents who grow to like him, and then we're stuck with him for who knows how long.

I kinda think (0.00 / 0)
that Massa is Dead Man Walking after redistricting. Neither the National nor the State Dems care much for him and the prospect of an ultra safe Republican district across the Western and Central parts of upstate is too appealing for both parties for their own selfish reasons.

[ Parent ]
I mean (0.00 / 0)
why would the state party spend political capital on a guy who
1) doesn't vote with them
2) probably will lose once the tide shifts, and
3) will hurt Dems around him if his district gets any bluer?

They won't.

[ Parent ]
It all depends on how you draw the map. (0.00 / 0)
You can draw a map of western New York so that every district is reasonably balanced, being blue enough to keep an incumbent Democrat in office, even in Massa's district (or rather what would become his district).

I am afraid, however, that some people will decide it makes more sense to gerrymander a set of districts where one is hard-right in order to make the others deep blue. I disagree with that strongly, and not just because my home county would be likely to get lumped into that district. It amounts to incumbent protection, and it is NOT planning for the future. The number of Dems upstate has been solidly growing for years, as evidenced by the swing in congressional districts. Drawing a fair map now means having a solidly blue map five years down the road.

My favorite (4.00 / 1)
My favorite nickname for Lee is "Corporate Chris."

[ Parent ]
Collins (0.00 / 0)
can not run for higher office. I was privy to parts of a background check on him. He has much more looming disqualifying factors, starting with his ex-wife and daughter who don't speak to him and continuing downhill from there.

If a well organized and well capitalized campaign had Collins to go after, he might have bigger problems than a loss coming.
