An Open Letter To Harold Ford, Jr.

by: United for New York

Fri Jan 22, 2010 at 09:23:01 AM EST

Today, as we celebrate the 37th anniversary of the Roe v. Wade decision, women still have to fight to protect their rights. That is why almost two hundred women's rights advocates and concerned citizens have signed this open letter to Harold Ford, Jr. letting him know that he will not get away with covering up his anti-choice record as he explores a Senate run against Senator Kirsten Gillibrand.

If you'd like to add your name to the list of signers, please sign your name at the ipetition here.

Full text of the letter and the list of signers is over the fold.

United for New York :: An Open Letter To Harold Ford, Jr.
To:  Mr. Harold Ford Jr.

Over the years we have had the opportunity to serve in many capacities - as public officials, community leaders, and advocates for the causes we believe in.  All of us have worked extremely hard to promote women's equality and to ensure reproductive rights for women.  We are proud that New York is one of the most pro-choice states in the country and we support politicians committed to this standard.  Based on your own words and deeds, you simply do not measure up.

Your views as a Member of Congress, a candidate, and a political commentator do not match your current claim that you are pro-choice.  Being pro-choice means you stand up and fight for a woman's right to her own medical decisions, even when it is not popular.  You played politics with a woman's right to choose in your Tennessee Senate race - proudly calling yourself pro-life and spending campaign money on ads to showcase your anti-choice record.  Recently, in the New York Post, you decry the "pro-life" label, but when it suited your political ambitions in 2006, you stated clearly that you are "pro-life" and that you "don't run from that."  You certainly seem to be running from it today.

Senator Gillibrand, on the other hand, LONG before she sought political office, proudly volunteered with pro-choice groups.  As a member of Congress she had 100% voting records with NARAL and Planned Parenthood.  We never had any need to question where she stood on protecting a woman's right to choose, even when she ran for election in a relatively conservative district.  Now as Senator, she has continued the fight for choice, having stood boldly against the dangerous Stupak amendment in the health care debate.  She is, and has always been, our unwavering advocate.

This, Mr. Ford, is why women across the state, and indeed around the country, and pro-choice groups such as NARAL, Planned Parenthood, and WCLA - Choice Matters, have spoken out so strongly against your possible candidacy.  It is not about bullying.  It IS about making our voices heard.  You are not pro-choice, you do not share our values and, as such, you will find yourself lacking support from pro-choice women in New York.

Please know that we will work tirelessly to promote Senator Gillibrand's strong record on choice and to expose your revisionist one.  We will make sure that the pro-choice people of New York State know that, with your words and with your votes, time and time again, you have not stood with us on the critical value of a woman's right to choose.

As Senator Daniel Patrick Moynihan said:  "Everyone is entitled to his [or her] own opinion, but not to his [or her] own facts."  The facts are clear:  you have not been straight with us and you are not an advocate of a woman's right to choose.  Senator Gillibrand is our champion and we will work hard to ensure that she continues as Senator from the great State of New York.

Sincerely,

Marilyn Abbott

SENATOR GILLIBRAND IS A WORTHY SUCCESSOR TO HILLARY CLINTON (4.00 / 2)
Thank you, United for New York, for this fine statement of our values and our support for Senator Gillibrand.

Just as Hillary Clinton was crystal clear about being a pro-choice advocate and activist, so is Kirsten Gillibrand.

Equally clear is that Harold Ford, aka Ford-Edsel or Helicopter Harold, is murky and muddy, at best.  His deliberate misuse of words and meanings fools only his handlers and the New York Post, with its snarky agenda of electing a Republican.

As Senator Gillibrand has said, Ford is wrong for New York.  I encourage women everywhere to use the 37th anniversary of Roe V. Wade to sign this letter and make it crystal clear to Ford-Edsel that New York is not his place, and that we do not need a divisive, costly primary.

We do need to join together and focus on sending Kirsten back to the Senate in 2010 and 2012 with strong majorities so that she can continue her effective, progressive representation.

Nice letter. (4.00 / 2)
Might be a little overkill, but when the facts are with your guy and against the other guy, establishing them early and often is a good call.

Make no small plans.

Notice a name missing from the signatories? (4.00 / 2)
Hint: initials CK...

She's been missing (0.00 / 0)
for a really long time, not just lately, which is the single most compelling reason against her being an appropriate choice to fill Hillary's seat.

Let's also learn from MA-SEN (0.00 / 0)
Even though there doesn't seem to be any Republicans that are a threat in the NY-Sen race, none of us figured that Scott Brown would win.

Brown was a perfect stealth candidate - and the Republicans could be grooming one here to defeat Gillibrand.

With NY primaries being just 9 weeks before the general election, Gillibrand's need to fight for a primary is counterproductive.

Yes ,a lot of Liberals are pissed about the appointment of Gillibrand, but aren't we glad now we didn't have a special election for Hillary's seat?

Gillibrand may not be the perfect progressive many people want, but she beats a candidate like Ford or even worse, a Republican.

Ford doesn't have a chance in hell of winning the primary, but he might cause Gillibrand to lose in the general.  Bloomberg and a handful of media moguls should not be choosing our next senator, or worse yet, miscalculating and causing NY to end up with a Republican.

Let's push Ford out of consideration so we can spend our time productively - keeping our state blue and getting rid of the remaining Republicans in our congressional delegation. (Plus getting fresh blood in to our state legislature.)

The only thing I disagree with (4.00 / 1)
The only thing I disagree with is your characterizing Bloomburg and the media moguls as "miscalculating" in a way that could give the seat to a Republican.  I think that would be just fine with them.

[ Parent ]
Agreed. Bloomberg is, after all, effectively a Republican. (4.00 / 1)
A socially liberal one maybe, but to the business elites, inside baseball and deregulation are infinitely more important than the actual level of liberalism.

[ Parent ]
Harold Ford IS the stealth Republican candidate (0.00 / 0)
He's just trying to get the Democrats to pay for his run. Which is very smart really, the smartest part of his entire disasterous roll-out.

[ Parent ]
Bloomberg's Plan (0.00 / 0)
Is to get a Republican from NY in the Senate and what better way than in fighting by the Democrats, causing Gillibrand to spend on a primary and not having enough for the general.
