Paterson To Resign?

by: phillip anderson

Sun Feb 07, 2010 at 20:22:25 PM EST

The twitters seem to be aflame with some rather thinly sourced rumors that the Gov will be resigning tomorrow after that "bombshell" Times story finally comes out tomorrow.

People keep asking me if I have heard anything more than what everyone else has. I haven't.

You?

Just also reading tweets and bloggish rumors (4.00 / 1)
So, "resign" seems kinda severe for simple adultery, no?  I mean, Spitzer got caught breaking federal law by the feds, and still hung on for nearly a week after the story broke.

Unless whomever he was nuzzling in the broom closet was under the age of twelve or something, resignation on the day the story breaks seems extreme.

This one is interesting-- http://www.nypost.com/p/news/o...

Apparently, the troopers are not on the beat in the broom closets of the Executive Mansion.  Unless, I guess, somebody got a warrant or something.

Hey, I know... (4.00 / 1)
Since it is the NYT-- maybe its not somebody underage, but, you know, the Senator with the little-girl voice.  Just 'cuz they like to make up bad stuff about her.

[ Parent ]
Probably not going to be a real bombshell compared to Spitzer (4.00 / 1)
Go back to Paterson's March '08 series of mea culpas; it probably is something along those lines.  In other words, if there is something to it, we've probably heard about it before.

[ Parent ]
starting to wonder (4.00 / 1)
if there is a story.

Though maybe it's held up in legal...

Nah (4.00 / 1)
I suspect Paterson's going to dig in for all he's worth.

[ Parent ]
Problem is... (4.00 / 1)
...the public doesn't think he's worth much.  A shame, yes.  But a political reality.

I have deja vu all over again...I have a feeling that after Wednesday, even the calendar is going to say:

"WTF!?"

[ Parent ]
Commenter at Gawker has the real scandal: (4.00 / 6)
"Perhaps they've discovered that he has no idea how to govern."

ROFL (0.00 / 0)
But ... I don't think that's news!  True, but I think the rest of the state figured it out a while ago.

[ Parent ]
Wish I could shout "Bingo." (4.00 / 1)
But the commentor's just providing a little irony.

[ Parent ]
What a sad state of affairs (4.00 / 2)

There is no point in resigning now - especially since (4.00 / 2)
we have an appointed Lieutenant governor.  He can stay in office, he'll be out the door come January.

Gotta wonder if Cuomo's camp is behind this.

All of this is making New York look like a banana republic.  The Comptoller resigns for misuse of state funds, Spitzer resigns for patronizing prostitutes, Bruno is indicted for illegal financial dealings, and now the Governor?

Talk about Cuomo being the last guy standing!  And if he's going to run for Governor, he needs to do a better job of vetting Lieutenant Governor candidates, "just in case"

HylasBrook

How do we know (4.00 / 1)
that Cuomo hasn't got problems too?

I mean, hey.  At this point, isn't it a fair question to wonder?

[ Parent ]
The Enquirer (4.00 / 1)
Is going to love this.  Cuomo, hurry up and announce you're running.

not sure how I feel..... (4.00 / 2)
I mean really, would I be surprised?  No, not at all in this state. At some point the race to the bottom with our politicians will have to end. At some point the good people will run the state again. In my heart I feel that the only way to ever fix this system is complete and total public financing of campaigns so that the good and true candidates can run from both parties or even third parties.

If the scandal is sexual in nature (4.00 / 3)
Can't he just switch parties to Republican and hang around for the rest of his term? (Like Vitter, like Ensign, like Sanford, like ...)

There's no story tomorrow (4.00 / 2)
BUT even if there is/were/will be, why does everyone/anyone think Paterson will resign?

He is fundamentally unemployable at this point (even before an allegedly new, major scandal), and thus has no incentive to leave the job, plane, helicopter, DJ, 200-trooper security detail, mansion (and utility closet) behind.

Just saying.

I agree (4.00 / 1)
Gee, no story today... which should make anyone think this is more bullying-by-press-threat over the Senate seat, a la Caroline.  And we all know which interests were behind that.

[ Parent ]
What exactly is he (4.00 / 1)
rumored to be accused of? Or is the rumor just that there's a rumor that he's guilty of something?

What the trooper saw (4.00 / 1)
You may have seen the report that a state trooper opened a closet door and saw Paterson ... well ... doing something he probably shouldn't have been doing.  Apparently, whatever it was has gotten out.

[ Parent ]
If it IS a sex scandal (4.00 / 1)
They've been blowing up and teasing, the NYT will have lost any itty-bitty residual modicum of respect I had for them. It will clearly be a conveniently timed hit job playing to the worst forces in politics.

If Paterson is to go down, I'd much prefer it be on his credits or deficits to govern, not his fidelity to his wife.

(I don't deny it's "news" but not worthy of three weeks of leaks and teasing.)

[ Parent ]
What if (4.00 / 2)
I agree that a sex scandal shouldn't bring down Democrats (can you say David Vitter, Mark Sanford, John Ensign...?).

Suppose, however, that Paterson was canoodling in the closet with a lobbyist for AEG.  That would certainly be a story.

[ Parent ]
Well, that's a public integrity/ethics issue (0.00 / 0)
Not a sex issue.

[ Parent ]
If (4.00 / 1)
If (and I know this is a huge IF) there is a story and it is true, I almost wonder if this is the politico's version of "suicide by cop." Paterson said he never wanted to be Governor, but his pride or ego or whatever won't let him drop out of the race.

Circular Tweets (4.00 / 1)
Twitter was all a buzz about this but the only sources anyone linked to were exactly the same ones - mostly Liz Benjamin posting that she heard this was going to happen.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

A long, strange trip.... (0.00 / 0)
...what if that's the bombshell?

What if Spitzer's resignation was brought on by illicit sex (a trick) and Paterson's fall will be brought upon by...illicit drug use?

WHOA!  I'm getting kicked off the library computer!

[ Parent ]
Well? WE'RE WAITING! (4.00 / 1)

"Generic comment signature."

Yep, still waiting... (0.00 / 0)
Is it perhaps a "whitey tape?"
