NY Senator Race - Now Zuckerman wants in? With more Ford news!

by: Norbrook

Sat Feb 13, 2010 at 09:14:35 AM EST

Gawker has a story up detailing the potential "interest" of Mort Zuckerman, billionaire publisher of the NY Daily News in challenging Senator Kirsten Gillibrand  From the NY Times:
Mr. Zuckerman regards Ms. Gillibrand as vulnerable to a challenge and is hoping that, at a time of economic tumult and political unrest, his background as an outsider to government, and his record as a business executive, will appeal to the state's electorate, these people said.

Of course, not for him to go through the messy primary process.  If he runs, he'll run as a Republican.

Norbrook :: NY Senator Race - Now Zuckerman wants in? With more Ford news!
Gawker gets sarcastic about it:
2010 will be a wonderful year for wealthy, entitled members of the establishment who've been coddled and flattered their entire adult lives to pretend to be independent-minded "outsiders" challenging the system with their crazy traditional Republican policy ideas. Mort Zuckerman for Senate! He'll return America to Fiscal Responsibility with a Ranked List of Colleges!

Yes, we can now look forward to yet another insulated member of Manhattan's "elite" trying to run on how he can help a state he hasn't really paid attention to outside of the island.

In other news, it appears that our good friend Harold Ford will not have to put up with the icky slush that comes as March starts to thaw things out.  He's going to Bermuda!

On March 4, Ford is slated to be the keynote speaker at the Bermuda International Business Association's annual meeting, to be held at the luxury Fairmont Hamilton Princess Hotel  (pictured below). He'll talk, according to a BIBA press release, about "the challenges and opportunities that face America and how Bermuda can play a vital role in the U.S. and global economy.

The vital role is - tax haven.  Which, from previous stories, we know this is an area he's an expert in.  I fully expect him to share with his audience the techniques of establishing a non-residence residency to avoid paying reduce their tax burden.

There must be something in the water.

Helicopter Harold! (4.00 / 4)
I bet he runs on the "New York for Ford" party line.

His rollout is going so well, maybe he should change "Ford" to "Toyota," 'cause you can't stop him!  (You can only hope to contain him).

Thats funny right there (4.00 / 2)

[ Parent ]
Maybe the "CT for Lieberman" party (4.00 / 2)
Will take him?

[ Parent ]
And in other news, Governor Paterson (4.00 / 1)
tells Larry King that "I have thought about who might be after me, but for me to speculate about it would be as wrong as the speculations that were made about me."

Let me help you out Governor.  The ones who are after you are called "most Democrats in the state."

FWIW, Paterson's reception tonight (4.00 / 1)
at the Black and Puerto Rican legislators/staff get-together in Albany was the only one with a cash bar.

Which presumably did not help Paterson appeal to what he assumes to be his base.

[ Parent ]
If Paterson wants to win back support from the state... (4.00 / 3)
...free booze is DEFINITELY going to be required.

[ Parent ]
LOL! (4.00 / 1)
OK, he means "who might be after me" as in, "who's out to get me."  I thought he was thinking about "who will follow after me, when I am no longer governor," and deciding it was wrong to speculate.  Of course, we all pretty much know...

[ Parent ]
I had to read it twice to realize (4.00 / 2)
he wasn't speculating on the next NY Guv'ner. But for a moment I thought he'd come to his senses. I'm sure his spoken inflection was clear, it just doesn't transcript well.

[ Parent ]
Zuckerman is a billionaire (4.00 / 3)
who only floated his trial balloon in the Times because Helicopter Harold Ford has failed big-time in the first six weeks of his NYC-media-aided primary campaign.

Bloomberg evidently MUST HAVE a Senator who will do his bidding; Zuckerman would be Plan C.

And Pinch is ever-willing to help out in that.

What I find amusing (4.00 / 3)
is their assumption that just because they're "known" in Manhattan or various circles of power in Washington, that it translates to being able to appeal to the electorate of a state.  Speaking from an upstate perspective, I know that "rich"+"New York City" are not something that makes you popular to begin with.  In Ford's case, adding in "just moved here" is another big negative.  Zuckerman has the "who?" problem - he may be very well known in his "circles," but most people - i.e.; the electorate - haven't got a clue as to who he is.

[ Parent ]
A big problem in politics (4.00 / 3)
What you're talking about is a local symptom of a widespread problem.  Politicians (and would-be politicians) tend to think that because the people around them think well of them that everyone knows and likes them.  As a result, they don't really reach out to new people, which is why many newcomers fail to win election.

This is especially a problem with an elected official who believes that he or she is well-known and well-liked among his or her constituents.  It is the hubris that caused many New York City Council members to vote themselves a third term -- in fact, one Council member, during the debate, actually claimed to be well-known and well-liked in his district, although available evidence indicates he is not well-known, and not particularly well-liked among those few who do know him.

Is it any wonder that turnout in the recent New York City Democratic primary was 11%?

[ Parent ]
which is why (4.00 / 4)
I doubt Zuckerman is even going to run.

These "announcements" about rich Manhattanites wanting to seek statewide office are really statements that are not actually for statewide contemplation.  This is a power conversation that rich Manhattanites are having amongst themselves, chatter really, a sort of maneuvering-by-media that has to do with their status in their own circle.  You'll see more and more of this, because the horizons of these people are shrinking as they fight over smaller and smaller pieces of the once-big world economic pie that they used to command.  "New York State" is merely a dim theoretical concept to them now.  Zuckerman apparently thinks he can score some points with whoever he wants to score points with, by saying this.

The disconnect from reality will only grow larger.  This is why I personally don't feel inclined to give Zuckerman much thought.  They're just playing games.

Guess the Billionaire Boys Club (4.00 / 2)
Needed to find a new horse once the tax dodge story got out. I thought they would. Guess they figured, if they want the job done right they're gonna have to do it themselves.

hmmm (4.00 / 3)
While I believe Upstate farmers and rural voters might turn out for Zuckerman's Famous Pig, somehow I don't think they will do the same for Zuckerman the Famous Pig.

Zuckerman Running As A Republican (4.00 / 2)
If Zuckerman wants to run as a Republican because the Democratic field is too full did he forget that Bruce Blakeman is running for Gillibrand's seat also as a Republican?
Anyway, I see this as a farce and Zuckerman who is just as unknown as Blakeman (not to mention Tennessee Harold) won't stand a chance.
Speaking of Tennessee Harold, why is he being given time on "Meet The Press?"  I understand MSNBC has suspended him and won't take him back until he decides if he's running or not so why put him on a National Program like "Meet The Press."

Helicopter Harold on "Meet the Press" (4.00 / 3)
What I found interesting was that he took the opportunity to start sounding like a Democrat for a change.

Of course, Rachel Maddow was the real voice of reason and intelligence.

[ Parent ]
Rachel usually is. (4.00 / 2)
I occasionally disagree with her, but when it comes to being prepared, asking questions, and listening to her guests, she's unmatched.

[ Parent ]
So Right Dan (4.00 / 2)
Rachel Maddow is a voice of reason and I thought she would have liked to really get at Tennessee Harold. When he said that he supports a woman's right and that his record is just being distorted, I thought he's say the same for the gay community and then she would have really pounced (no pun intended) on him.
