NYT Drops 'Bombshell' Story About David.....Johnson?

by: phillip anderson

Wed Feb 17, 2010 at 08:21:36 AM EST

That Times story is finally out, heavy on "shell", light on "bomb."

David W. Johnson has worked for Gov. David A. Paterson for much of his adult life. He began as a young, ambitious intern from Harlem when Mr. Paterson was a state legislator. He rose to be Mr. Paterson's driver, serving as a kind of protector and scheduler.

In recent months, however, Mr. Johnson's ascent has been striking: he is now one of the most senior people in the governor's administration, paid $132,000. He is described as Mr. Paterson's closest confidant, a man with a designated room for his overnight stays in the Executive Mansion, and a broadening role in areas like campaign strategy, government initiatives and the management of the governor's staff.

A review of Mr. Johnson's rise and his history, undertaken after he emerged as perhaps the man closest to the state's chief executive, shows that he was twice arrested on felony drug charges as a teenager, including a charge of selling cocaine to an undercover officer in Harlem.

The examination of his background, based on interviews and records, shows he has at least one other arrest, for misdemeanor assault in the 1990s, although there is very little publicly available about that case.

I would have liked a lot more info on his education-- what he studied, how well he did-- in the article.  Impossible to get any handle on whether he might have any policy skills or not.

Do people get paid triple-digit salaries in Albany for being 6'7", from Harlem, and somebody the Governor trusts?  Heck, even Boxley at least had a law degree.  And, yeah, the relationship described reminds me of Boxley/Silver.  How much being powerful and intimidating is a good thing for a public servant in a democracy?  Does it lead to women getting used and hurt in various ways?  Definite maybe.  System is not respectable.

Media system, in which rumors and innuendo swirl, is also not respectable.

This is it? (4.00 / 2)
Really?

Not quite enough for David Paterson to resign over and throw the state into yet another constitutional crisis, I imagine.

Wow. I'm so not stunned. (4.00 / 2)
While this is interesting - and somewhat disturbing - in and of itself, as something that was printed after all the speculation, it's an anticlimax.

Ho hum (4.00 / 1)
...he has at least one other arrest, for misdemeanor assault in the 1990s.

Sounds like he'll fit in real well in Albany.

Really no news unless he's still selling cocaine.

rumors and journalistic practice (4.00 / 2)
Huh.  That's odd.  The Albany Times Union was posting specifically about the Paterson rumors last week, and what those rumors might mean for his political future.  Yet, when I tried to post the following comment on a TU blog, the moderator deemed it unsuitable:

I heard a rumor through the Albany-political-media-insiders-circuit that the entire TU politics desk is going to be forced to resign due to revelations that, unfortunately, won't be published until sometime next week, or possibly never.  Has anyone else heard this rumor?

Very odd.

that was excellent! bummer they were too dumb to get it.... (4.00 / 2)
maybe if you had modified it with a little something so that the moderator actually understood the point you were making, it wouldn't have been cut.

The thing that is started bothering me..... (4.00 / 2)
is that the Governor keeps insisting on hacking up the union contracted pay rates, yet he keeps taking care of his own "circle".  BS if you ask me. I mean really, cut the pay of the people that actually make government work and increase the pay of those that screw it all up. great idea.
