Ford fiddles as New York burns

by: Michael Bouldin

Fri Feb 26, 2010 at 23:19:47 PM EST

In  what has got to be one of the longer episodes of foreplay on record, Harold Ford announced today that we won't be favored with an announcement of his purported Senate run until David Paterson stops hogging the limelight.

Playing hard to get, are we, Harold?

If we look back, that run began with the startling Times piece that first alerted a stunned world to this possibility on January 6th.

Then, The New York Times gave him a blow job on January  13th.

That prompted Gawker to create - curate? - the season's best headline: New York Times Allows Harold Ford to Destroy Himself.

Then, on February 6th, we learned that

I'm not comparing myself to Bobby Kennedy by any stretch, but he was opposed by the liberal establishment too," ... "Eleanor Roosevelt was the biggest opponent to him running"

Gack. Bad Eleanor. Oh wait, she was actually dead at the time. Still is, in fact.

And as of today, the newest word from Mr. Ford schedules the climactic moment, will he or won't he, for next week.

That's elastic enough to stretch into July at least, if he keeps this up.

Ford pretends that the Paterson thing (4.00 / 2)
affects his weird candidacy.

When it was a loser all along.

Heard Jay Jacobs (4.00 / 3)
On NY-1 met with Ford this week and told him that he could have a future in NY politics but he didn't think he should take on Gillibrand for the Senate.

A future in NY politics?  Do we have a statewide office for dog catcher?

Too bad about Eleanor... (4.00 / 4)
...still being dead and all.  She is exactly what we need to get in here, roll up her sleeves, and clean this mess of place up.

Maybe what he was trying to say: (4.00 / 3)
Is that he has received the same endorsement from Eleanor that Bobby did.

Poor Harold (4.00 / 3)
he acts like anyone in New York state actually gives a crap about him.

What a long, strange trip it's been.

Bobby Kennedy? (4.00 / 3)
Is he effin' kidding? Next he'll be comparing himself to Gandhi and Jesus.

What a putz.

Message To Tennessee Harold Ford (4.00 / 3)
I knew Bobby Kennedy.  Bobby Kennedy was a friend of mine and you're no Bobby Kennedy.

Apparently he thinks he still has a shot (4.00 / 2)
Or there's something to be gained. Maybe his GOP friends are just punking him. Use him to try and beat up Gilli on the primary, figuring that may leave her weak enough to lose to (another) GOPer?

I'm honestly surprised he didn't drop out after last week's poll. 6 weeks of the papers daily shilling on his behalf, all those appearances and his poll numbers go DOWN one point? What's plan B? Win American Idol?

Plan B, crass and money-grubbing (0.00 / 0)
Here is my opinion about what Harold's "Plan B" is-- and it may, in fact, be "Plan A."  In NYS, a politician who amasses contributions in a war chest is allowed to hold and use those assets as long as he claims to be considering a future run for office, and uses the money for "legitimate" expenses related to considering or running.  Harold knows some high-rollers who he has doubtless hit up for some cash, what with him having been a former Senator and all.  There are also some fools who are too dumb to see that Gillibrand is a very good Senator for NY, and are willing to kick in on that basis.

Look for Harold to continue to "consider" running for something over a number of years, all the while charging off, say, his refueling stop in his helicopter in Staten Island on his way somewhere else to his "campaign expenses."  He might, like other NYS politicians before him, have to visit a stripper bar in Florida to "consult" with the right people about a proposed run for Mayor of NY.  Etc., etc.  While this is still legal in NY, scum like Ford will milk it.

Well, we know he's got a large ego (4.00 / 2)
It goes along nicely with his disconnection from reality.  The good thing about him is that every time he opens his mouth, he ends up pushing yet more Democrats to line up behind Gillibrand.   He's even  managed to get Bloomberg to start saying nice things about her.

Harold Ford's potential "candidacy" has been a source of amusement (4.00 / 1)
and irritation to political junkies.  But just like in old vaudeville, it's time for that crook to come out and pull Ford off stage.

He's saying he won't (0.00 / 0)
NY Times is announcing on its website that Ford has decided not to run for the senate.
