NYT: Paterson Personally Directed Staff To Contact Violence Victim

This certainly appears to be checkmate for the Accidental Governor. The Times drops yet another bombshell on Paterson and this one is probably, or at least should be, fatal.

Paterson Is Said to Have Ordered Calls in Abuse Case

Gov. David A. Paterson personally directed two state employees to contact the woman who had accused his close aide of assaulting her, according to two people with direct knowledge of the governor's actions.

Mr. Paterson instructed his press secretary, Marissa Shorenstein, to ask the woman to publicly describe the episode as nonviolent, according to a third person, who was briefed on the matter. That description would contradict the woman's accounts to the police and in court.

Mr. Paterson also enlisted another state employee, Deneane Brown, a friend of both the governor and the accuser, to make contact with the woman before she was due in court to finalize an order of protection against the aide, David W. Johnson, the two people with direct knowledge said. Ms. Brown, an employee of the Division of Housing and Community Renewal, reached out to the woman on more than one occasion over a period of several days and arranged a phone call between the governor and the woman, Mr. Johnson's companion.

After the calls from Ms. Brown and the conversation with the governor, the woman failed to appear for the court hearing on Feb. 8, and the case was dropped.

These accounts provide the first evidence that Mr. Paterson helped direct an effort to influence the accuser.

Just when you thought this whole sordid tale couldn't get worse, it does. Can anyone tell me that what the governor and his staff engaged in here isn't de facto witness tampering? Don't people go to jail for that?

Say what you want to about Spitzer, but when the Times had him dead to rights, he manned up, admitted it and walked away.

don't ya love (4.00 / 2)
how he gets other women to do the dirty work?

A fucking banana republic. (4.00 / 2)
That's what we are. Embarrassing.

No way he walks. (4.00 / 4)
Why would he? If I'm David Paterson, I could resign in shame and be a national joke for weeks or I could stick it out and, as a lame duck, be largely ignored outside of the 3 NYC papers. Clearly I'm picking option 2.

I'm starting to believe (4.00 / 1)
that New York women who want to influence public policy just get thrown down a black hole when they go to Albany.  The place is toxic and women should not go there, it's a waste of time.  Time to regroup and get back to Seneca Falls, ladies.

Good column by the PS' Sean Kirst on the subject-

Paterson will have to resign soon (4.00 / 2)
or else call the NYFD to put out the flames that are consuming his pants.  Liar, liar, pants on fire.  This whole thing is beyond belief.

BTW, Spitzer/Paterson '06 (4.00 / 4)
= absolute worst unmitigated NYS political disaster of all time

I keep a Spitzer/Paterson button on my desk (4.00 / 2)
to remind me that I too can be very wrong in my enthusiasms...

[ Parent ]
I have a hat (0.00 / 0)
I like to wear for the ironic value.

[ Parent ]
I use my (0.00 / 0)
copy of the Spitzer bio "Spoiling for a Fight" as a lap shield for my netbook, since the book has no resale value.

[ Parent ]
I still want my money back (4.00 / 1)
To think that I donated as heavily to Spitzer/Paterson as I ever have to any political campaign, thinking it was a true reform effort. Not only did they make a mockery of their own campaign promises, they made it nearly impossible to believe anyone else who carries a reform banner. Who can we believe anymore in this State?

[ Parent ]
The worse result (4.00 / 2)
is that I lobbied my Republican family so hard for the Spitzer/Paterson ticket and got them on board for the most part...and now they no longer trust my political judgment. Gonna make it really hard to sell Cuomo or any other Democrat to them.

I'm wearing my Spitzer/Paterson shirt today (0.00 / 0)
I'm riding in the mud this afternoon. My clothes will go straight to the trash afterwards. I don't own a shirt that's more deserving.

Close second (4.00 / 3)
Followed closely by the election of a "Democratic" majority in the State Senate.

I LOVE this thread! (4.00 / 2)
Great comments, people!  If there's one thing to be learned from the past four years in this state, it's that we cannot - we must not - get caught up in our own expectations.

Nothing (and by that I mean, absolutely nothing) ever happens according to our expectations.  On the contrary, everything (and by that I mean absolutely everything) happens exactly as it is supposed to happen regardless of how we think it should.

In other words, if we place blind faith in One Party over The Other, we are going to get exactly what we deserve.  This is the core cause of suffering in human life, from minor irritations to major frustrations.

Let's not make that mistake again...starting now, like you guys just did :-)  Keep up the good work!

With the end of Paterson's stint as governor, what is to come of SEIU's plans for New York? (0.00 / 0)
In his budget, Paterson proposed a number of new taxes, the closure of facilities and other measures to suit a political agenda.  With the end of his tenure well within sight, what is to come of these initiatives and the outside agencies that support them?

It is hard to believe that the Service Employee International Union (SEIU) 1199 will simply allow the two million dollars investment in the soda tax simply fall to the wayside.  We know whom the SEIU had in their pocket.  And how that black-handed, double-dealing agent worked out for them.

So who will be the new face of the SEIU's regressive policy for New York?  What politician would be willing to back a union in their money grab from hardworking middle and lower classes of New York?  State Health Commissioner Richard Daines is already out there toting the SEIU's campaign to tax New Yorkers into poverty.

The Soda Tax (0.00 / 0)
is one of the stupidest ideas I've ever heard. This is America. Taxing people's FOOD choices in infringing on their freedoms, and is ridiculous.

Why single out soda? Is it just because they're made by giant corporations? I drink probably 1000 cans of Diet Pepsi a year, and get maybe 50 calories out of them. I eat tons of cheeseburgers, mostly made from beef by local farmers, and they contribute probably 100,000-150,000 calories a year to my diet. Why not tax those? I eat tons of potatoes, again nearly all made by farmers in the USA. Including frying oil, they probably contribute another 100,000 calories a year to my diet. Why not tax those?

Just stupid.

[ Parent ]
Because when you eat burgers and potatoes (0.00 / 0)
you feel satisfied and stop being hungry.  Soda never lets your body register as full.
