Arcuri now a 'no' on Healthcare?

by: simonstl

Wed Mar 03, 2010 at 11:51:06 AM EST

Well, I guess Roatti won't likely be donating to Mike Arcuri (in addition to Eric Massa) this cycle either:

U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri, D-Utica, said Tuesday he would vote against the Senate version of the health care bill that could soon go before the House of Representatives for approval.

Why? Arcuri doesn't like the "mega bill" approach, the prospect of reconciliation, and some differences in the Senate bill.

As his spokesman put it, "The congressman is very careful about evaluating each bill based on its own merits."

Outside of Tompkins County, that may possibly help his re-election bid this fall. Inside of Tompkins County, well, it won't.

(Via Talking Points Memo.)

Wow (0.00 / 0)
I hope it's not health related.

Maybe no re-election campaigning will let him vote yes on health care this time.

Nonsense! (4.00 / 1)
This isn't going to help Arcuri anywhere.  Anyone set against him on this issue was set against him after his first vote.  This won't change them.

Also, his excuses are crap.  First, he already voted for a "mega bill" (whatever that means...).  Arcuri is smarter than to really believe that the House passed some kind of modest pocket-sized reform and the Senate just made it all massive.

Second, he says he's against reconciliation.  Though whatever objections he has to reconciliation could not withstand the cruelty of common political logic, he's not a Senator.  He wants to shoot down health care because of the procedures of a body of which he is not a member?  Please.

Arcuri needs to stick to his original vote.  He's naive if he thinks he won't be tarred by Hanna for voting "yes" once.  He's already in it, he needs to see this through.

Exactly (4.00 / 2)
Arcuri makes no sense at all.

The conservatives are voting against him already because of his first vote. They're not coming around.

He's losing the liberals by voting no now--and he will more than just lose them if health care fails to pass because of his one vote. People will be outright hostile.

And moderates who look at metapolitics more than policy will see this as evidence that Arcuri is a John Kerry-like wishy-washy politician who just blows in the political wind.

When it comes down to it, I hate to say it, but Arcuri is pretty much finished this November regardless. In a great year for Dems in 2008 with an opponent who was little-known and received little national support, Arcuri barely squeaked by. This year, which will be either a moderately good to great year for Republicans, and the same challenger back, Arcuri is pretty much toast. He might as well finish the year as a strong and principled Representative, take his lickings in November, and hope for favorable redistricting for another run in 2012.

I thought I heard him say this a few weeks back on a radio show...... (0.00 / 0)
and I kind of did not believe it.  He is a liar and has completely lost all liberal/progressive support in Oneida County.  Last time he ignored the Obama supporters in the area up until a couple of weeks before the election because he thought he should run from Obama in this district until he realized he needed us and came calling.  This time he could come and beg his little ass off and he will not get my vote.  If you are going to stand for something then stand for it proudly, if not then get the f*ck out of the way.

Here's The News Report (0.00 / 0)
Aides to U.S. Rep. Michael Arcuri (D-Utica) appeared today with a wheel-barrow containing a quivering gelatinous substance emitting a foul odor.  The aides said that the substance was indeed Rep. Arcuri, or what was left of him, after a freak accident left the Congressman completely without a spine.  The aides announced that the gelatinous Congressman had decided to vote against health care reform.

I Feel The Same Way (0.00 / 0)
And I can't wait to hear my Congressman's (McMahon) excuse for not voting for this bill.  I've heard Obama is meeting with 10 members of Congress that are on the shelf, the meeting will start off nicely and then they'll have a gun put to their heards.  Wonder if they're including Arcuri in the meeting.

It should have read (0.00 / 0)
