NY-29: Massa Will Not Seek Reelection (Updated)

by: phillip anderson

Wed Mar 03, 2010 at 13:50:32 PM EST

First I got an email about a "very important press call" this afternoon, and now this (via Liz)

Rep. Eric Massa is poised to announce this afternoon that he will not seek re-election in the 29th Congressional District this fall as planned, a Democratic source confirms.

The freshman congressman is going to make his announcement at 3 p.m., according to the source. It's unclear if that event is taking place in the district or in Wahsington, D.C. A call to Massa's spokesman has so far not been returned.

...

Massa is calling around the district to inform party leaders and supporters of his decision.

The source said he assumed that Massa's move is "health related," but said the congressman also gave him a rather nebulous warning that he would be "hearing things that aren't true."

Sources close to the congressman say there has been talk of an ethics investigation, but a staffer in Massa's district office contacted yesterday insisted he had no knowledge of that.

Wow. Hope he's OK.

UPDATE: Here's a statement from Congressman Massa himself:

This last December I underwent my third major cancer recurrence scare.  I kept this private only to members of my immediate family.  I did not tell my staff.  It was a very intense and personal experience especially in light of having gone through this before.  I am a direct, salty guy who runs at 100 mph and my doctors have now clearly told me that I can no longer do that.  It is only fair and right that I announce that I will not run again in time for others to consider a run for this office.  I will now enter a final phase of my life at a more controlled pace and remained fully committed to helping the families of the 29th District.

There are blogs that are saying that I am leaving because of charges of harassing my staff.  Do I and have I used salty language?  Yes, and I have tried to do better.  But these blogs are a symptom of the problem in this city and I no longer have the life's energy to fight every battle.  I make this decision based on being a cancer survivor who, following the advice of my doctors in Washington and in New York, cannot and will not prevent others from serving in the Congress that I hold in such great esteem.

What is this... (4.00 / 1)
...Democratic Dropout Day or something?

Considering the updated circumstances... (0.00 / 0)
...I think I spoke too soon on this one.  Soon to be "Angels" of Harlem is one thing.

Cancer is another.  Let's keep Congressman Massa in our prayers.

Aside:  Who gives a flying fuck about "salty" language anyway?  Ya can't hold water without a little salt in your system!

okay... (4.00 / 1)
So we're starting off the 112th Congress with at least 3 NY Republicans.

I don't think he had much of a chance anyways. Not in this climate, not in that district.

If its true that he has cancer again (4.00 / 3)
Then Eric, I wish you all the best, get well.

[ Parent ]
Four. (0.00 / 0)
I don't see the DFH's at Hamilton College getting all enthused about turning out for Arcuri when he votes no on HCR.

[ Parent ]
Were they ever enthused about Arcuri? (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
Last I looked (4.00 / 1)
The true-blue votes from over here on the West side of his district were eeking out victory for Arcuri.  As I have mentioned, it's a tough district, and I think I know people all across the political spectrum who aren't fond of the Senate bill.

[ Parent ]
Oh no. (4.00 / 2)
Goddammit, I like Eric. Hope he's OK, too.

Hope his health is OK (0.00 / 0)

Allegations (4.00 / 1)
According to Politico, there are rumors that Massa was sexually harassing a member of his staff. I hope this isn't true.

http://www.politico.com/news/s...

and ABC says he's resigning today (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
so (4.00 / 1)
was there actually a 3 p.m. press conference?

[ Parent ]
There was a Call (4.00 / 1)
Robert was on it and tweeted what he heard:

http://twitter.com/robertharding

[ Parent ]
And Roll Call says it's cancer. Until I have reason to believe otherwise... (4.00 / 2)
...I'm going to assume that Politico is doing what they do best, which is lying and smearing on behalf of the Repubs.

[ Parent ]
They better hope they have that right (4.00 / 1)
or else that's a serious question of libel.

[ Parent ]
He sorta admitted to it (4.00 / 1)
because it could've been as simple as going someone a name perceived as sexual harassment.

[ Parent ]
I'm thinking that (4.00 / 2)
..the kind of talk that is ordinary in the Navy is a bit much for some staffers.... mighta been a difficult transition.  Liz has this.

[ Parent ]
yeah (4.00 / 1)
I've been called a fag a couple times by ex-bosses. Some people let it roll off their backs, others don't. Seeing how fiery Massa is, wouldn't surprise me on bit if he said something alluding to a staff member's sexuality in a fit of anger a few times.

No doubt the media would turn it into Mount Kilimanjaro if given the chance.

[ Parent ]
I would agree with this interpretation (0.00 / 0)
Not to say that makes it right (it doesn't), but calling it sexual harassment of a male staffer brings up a MUCH different image than an insensitive remark.  The difference between physical harassment and verbal harassment should be noted, especially considering how well-known the verbal tirades of some of the media's favorites (cough RAHM cough).

[ Parent ]
Very sad (4.00 / 1)

I have admired Massa and been a contributor since 2006 - a very impressive man. Don't know what to think about the rumors, but wish him the best with his health issues.

Yes, it's sad (0.00 / 0)
It has felt good to have a congressman that I could actually support, even a fellow Navy vet close to my own age as a bonus. I wish him well. I raise a glass for him in Burdett tonight.

[ Parent ]
Massa (0.00 / 0)
I don't think he would have used his health as an excuse for not running this year if his health wasn't a problem.  Look, it would be REALLY low of him to say that his cancer had returned and that the future wasn't good meanwhile knowing something was going to come out about him harrassing a staffer.

would like to know more (0.00 / 0)
about how this turned into rumorsmackings of a physical sexual harrassment nature.  Abusive verbal language may have a certain legal definition, but it is a different animal than what Politico seemed to be trying to imply.

[ Parent ]
Eric Massa (0.00 / 0)
This is tragic, both for Eric Massa and his family, and for all progressives as this seat is now in jeopardy.

Someone in the comments referred to "Democrat drop out day"  Did I miss something?  Any other members of Congress drop out over the last few days?

Another comment mentioned Politico.com   I have wondered about their political makeup.  Can someone enlighten me?

Politico is largely a Republican clearinghouse for propaganda. (0.00 / 0)
The only even vaguely fair and accurate person there is Ben Smith, but the rest of the place is like Fox News of the internet.
