Politico:

In [...] New York, where various state legislators have been embroiled in scandals, a new Marist College poll indicates that just 16 percent of voters believe the state Senate is doing an excellent or good job, while 82 percent rated it as fair or poor.

In the state Assembly, which hasn't been in the same throes of scandal and chaos as the state Senate, the numbers aren't much different: 17 percent said the Assembly is doing an excellent or good job, while 80 percent said the job was fair or poor.

"There's a cavalcade of problems coming out of Albany, huge stalemates, dysfunction and corruption issues," said Lee Miringoff, director of the Marist College Institute for Public Opinion.

Miringoff said while state lawmakers are inevitably linked to the general dissatisfaction with and distrust of the federal government, most of the displeasure in the Empire State has been homegrown. Back-to-back scandals in the governor's office certainly haven't helped.

"The big media centers in New York are usually New York City and D.C. You have to really work at it in Albany to punch through, but they have," said Miringoff. "It's a real mess out there."

By contrast, the most spectacular collapse in public approval in living memory, that of George Bush's presidency, bottomed out at 33% approve, 66% disapprove the week he left office. Little wonder there's a fundraising feeding frenzy.

Damage before the vote! (0.00 / 0)
His low poll numbers, the reports of his high office hi-jinx and finally his failure to sustain a campaign have ended David A. Paterson's New York political career for the foreseeable future. New Yorkers need to concern themselves with the damage Paterson does on his way out.
The state cannot tax its way to prosperity. People prefer a government that looks towards their benefit. Officials elected or looking to be elected in New York must present ways to promote economic health of the state. In the same way a family works together in the time of economic hardship, the state must do more with less. Innovation, not taxation should be public policy number one.

The Service Employees Internal Union (SEIU) 1199 has channeled millions of dollars into a campaign for a new sugared beverage tax on New Yorkers. That is what created this Alliance for a Healthier New York, but SEIU should take care of involving itself in politics. Back in 2003, the SEIU chastised AFL-CIO for being overly involved in the elections. Now in 2010, it is hypocritical that they should be involved in a campaign to burden New Yorkers with a new tax.

The SEIU should be asked to stop their interference in the budget of New York. The taxation of the general public is not and should not be the purview of a labor union. The SEIU 1199 doesn't pay these taxes, New Yorkers do.

Methinks... (4.00 / 3)
...perhaps you might be working for the soda industry?

Haven't seen you around these parts until March 2, and your only comments and single diary are about the sugar tax?

There are many other issues more important to the state other than the sugar tax. It's important only to industry groups who are afraid that the tax will discourage people from buying their crappy products.

Just sayin'.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Danger lurks around every corner... (0.00 / 0)
Albany is in for a potential rude awakening. It seems that even voters who like their reps are second guessing incumbency.

Democrats hold majorities in both houses of the legislature, and fair or not, are the face of Albany corruption. This is an extremely dangerous place to be.

The November elections will determine who gets to redistrict. With voter anger trending so consistently anti-incumbent, the Democrat's majority of 1 in the state Senate is in great peril (maybe even the Assembly majority), thus throwing redistricting into the hands of the Republican Party and ensuring gerrymandered Republican districts for at least a decade, maybe longer.

What is the solution? The Democratic party needs to encourage competitive primaries and field good, progressive, reform-minded candidates willing and able to challenge sitting Democratic incumbents who have been willing participants in this "culture of corruption", and need to target their Republican counter-parts as well.

Make no mistake about it - if Democrats fail to offer viable alternatives to sitting Senators and Assemblymembers who are not delivering for New York, they will lose the power and majorities they fought so hard for, and may just find themselves having to start all over again.

Tax the Church.

This is why! (0.00 / 0)
For those who question the RebootNY message that all 61/62 senators should be replaced, this poll tells us why.

By better than 5 to 1, (as much as 9 to 1 in specific districts), voters think NYS government is on the wrong track.  By similar numbers they blame the Senate as an institution for causing this mess.  While political junkies, like us, know that the mess was created by Joe Bruno and Warren Anderson, most people now blame Democrats for the mess.  If we pick and choose whom we should keep and whom we should challenge, we get tossed into partisan fray and lose credibility.

So for those "good" incumbents, it is incumbent on them to make reform their issue and to promise leadership on that issue in no uncertain terms.  AS NYBri has pointed out, we haven't heard that from them yet.  They are still protecting incumbents.
