Massa Situation Spiraling Out of Control

by: BingChester

Mon Mar 08, 2010 at 16:26:47 PM EST

I like Eric Massa.  I really do.  So I feel a sense of dread and sadness when I see how this story is slowing but surely spiraling out of control.  Massa's story is becoming more and more ridiculous, layered, angry, and scorned.  This is a classic slash-and-burn tactic and it's very sad to see.

In roughly 12 hours, Massa has changed his narrative from "congressman resigning in disgrace" to angry, Howard Beale-esque truth-teller who'd simply had enough and will take his party to the woodshed. Left unsettled: the incredibly important issue of whether he'll resign today, as he said he would, or he'll try to bring down the health care bill by staying in Congress.
source

Rep. Eric Massa (D-N.Y.) says the House ethics committee is investigating him for inappropriate comments he made to a male staffer on New Year's Eve - and that he's the victim of a power play by Democratic leaders who want him out of Congress because he's a "no" vote on health care reform.

"Mine is now the deciding vote on the health care bill," Massa, who on Friday announced his intention to resign, said during a long monologue on radio station WKPQ. "And this administration and this House leadership have said, quote-unquote, they will stop at nothing to pass this health care bill. And now they've gotten rid of me, and it will pass. You connect the dots."

source

In a heated, rambling monologue on his weekly show on Hornell radio station WKPQ-FM, Massa described the conversation that he said led to an investigation. The show is listed on Massa's official schedule, and a link to a recording -- http://drop.io/massa3710 -- was provided by WHAM-TV.

After dancing with a bridesmaid, Massa said, he returned to a table full of male staffers who he said had been drinking heavily.

"A staff member made an intonation that maybe I should be chasing after the bridesmaid," Massa said. He responded by saying, "Well, what I really ought to be doing is frakking you." He said the complaint came not from that staffer, but from another at the table. source

There's really not a whole lot I can add here.  I think there's probably a lot of valid things that Massa is saying but the fact that he's decided now to go on the attack and is sitting down for an hour long discussion with Glenn Beck doesn't pass the smell test with me.  It smells like conspiracy-paranoia-last ditch attempt to save his skin.  And for that, I find the whole situation utterly depressing.  When someone who comes across as straight forward, active, and bold as Eric Massa can get caught up in this sort of insanity, it makes me wonder how we can trust those that represent us.  If not Eric Massa, then who?

Glenn Beck?! (4.00 / 5)
Sheesh.  Calling Rahm Emanuel some relative of devil spawn in Hornell is one thing.  Glen Beck is, ya know, like fraternizing with the enemy.  The enemy of the US people.

Exactly my thoughts n/t (4.00 / 1)

Let's find out what he says first, eh? (4.00 / 1)
If he goes on Beck's show and disassembles him limb from limb for all of Beck's misbehavior, he'd probably be a lauded here.

[ Parent ]
Honestly (4.00 / 2)
I don't think good democrats go on Fox and afford them credibility. But I understand good people can disagree on THAT.

But no one should go on Beck. No one. Ever.

[ Parent ]
Yeah, adding Glenn Beck to the mix (0.00 / 0)
I'm sure THAT will make it better. Good strategy.

To be honest, I was never that (4.00 / 1)
enamored of Massa in the first place.  Yes, I donated to his campaign, and I wanted him to win, just like I did any other Democrat running that year.

What I've never understood was the unreasoning fan club he attracted.  He's not all that progressive.  He waved away his "no" vote on the House HCR vote by claiming it was on principle, but push come to shove, it was still a no vote on an important bill.

What I'm seeing here is a complete meltdown.  I'm not buying the story about his being "forced" out, nor am I buying his story about the ethics case.  It really is something that this state didn't need at this time, and it's really discouraging.

Me Neither (4.00 / 2)
Again, this is just a sad situation, because I did want Eric to do well.  But I never went over the moon for him and I'd been more and more disenchanted since his cap & trade vote.

If not Eric Massa, then who?

Um, a lot of other people.  How about Louise Slaughter?  How about someone who works hard for change instead of preening his progressive intents while voting like a Republican?

My take away from this situation is much the same as it was with Edwards.  It's not wise to fall head over heels for a politician because of their appealing rhetoric, or (more appropriately) because of the catharsis that their liberal foot-stomping gives you.

It has to be about character, too.  But more to the point with Massa, I want a more demonstrated record of progressive belief before I give my full support (cough Bill Owens cough).  I don't just want a win and I don't just want someone whose shouting on The Ed Show makes me nod.

Now that he is making common cause with Glenn Beck and wailing about reconciliation being the gateway to national ruin, we know that there was no greater political logic behind Massa's HCR stand.  I don't take any satisfaction in being right about this guy.  I just want us to take a long look at the beliefs and temperment of our next guy before he steals our hearts with flashy progressive tantrums.

With Bill Owens (4.00 / 1)
I went in there with my support, mainly because he's now my congressman.  :D  I'm realistic enough to know that this district was not going to elect a "true progressive" - parts of it hadn't elected a Democrat in over 150 years.  Do I wish he were more progressive?  Yes, but I also realize that this district is nowhere near going that way, so he's a good fit for the district.  He also, one might notice, voted for the HCR bill.

What I've noticed about the "fall head over heels" syndrome is that it tends to suck the oxygen out of other campaigns that are just as important, or may have a "bigger bang for the buck."  I know right now there's a number of primaries starting up out there that are getting little or no attention, but are going to be important for the party - but if you look at the netroots, you'd assume the only thing going on was the senatorial primary in Arkansas.

I've removed myself from most of the national e-mail lists, since I'm not interested in trying to turn (fill in the state) "blue" - I'm going to focus on this state, because lord knows, we've got an awful mess to clean up.

oxygen (4.00 / 2)
News flash... to a certain degree, ALL these Congressional campaigns (i.e., the Eternal Congressional Campaign Cycle which never stops) suck the oxygen out of real politics.

The only reason why New York's dysfunctional legislature became a cause celebre is because, in 2004, there were no important campaigns happening in the state - no guv, no U.S. Senate, no major Congressional retirements.  And of course, the presidential election always bypasses New York State, so that didn't suck up any oxygen either.  This created a media condition where the Brennan Center Report was the only thing left to talk about.

Is it possible that this constant obsession with Congress (and the great-hope-candidate-of-the-moment, or disappointment with these candidates) is sapping real energy and real understanding out of the political scene?

Working for a Democratic's election is (4.00 / 1)
not falling head over heels for one.  Few politicians show signs of dangerous weaknesses when they run -- it's when they're in office that we learn unpleasant details we didn't know before.

Massa is 'acting out' - we really don't know what happened in his office & wouldn't have cared if he'd just resigned.

His narrative is spinning out of control - but at least people are paying attenting to HIM - even if it is on the level of WTF.

Picking candidates and getting them elected is always a roll of a dice.  No point in blaming ourselves or each other.

Being a progressive isn't easy.  We keep fighting for justice for the average American election after election setbacks or not.

This is not going to end well (4.00 / 3)

Agreed. (0.00 / 0)
Not end well at all.

We've got some work ahead of us.

Massa (0.00 / 0)
My guess is that he has a mental problem, maybe from his time in the Navy or maybe from the cancer he was operated on and has now come back.

I certainly do hope he gets help and gets it quickly.

Possibly drinking? (0.00 / 0)
That's not uncommon and would explain everything.

[ Parent ]
Groping? (4.00 / 1)
The Washington Post says that the only office Massa holds is the Mayor of Gropeghanistan.

Which is the same thing I heard last week from someone very close to the situation.

So what does that mean to all of you?

To me it means the new boss is the same as the old boss (0.00 / 0)
Republicans/Democrats - Federal Government/State Government - there's not much difference.  Maybe I'm just jaded from all the phone banking, donating, letters to the editor and blogging I've done for the past 10 years.

Honestly?  I don't see much difference between one party and the other anymore. Dennis Kucinich so the only politician that makes any sense to me.
