Scott Murphy's virtual town hall 3/10/10

Don't know if anyone here was at Scott Murphy's telephone town hall meeting.  Here are my impressions.

I was told there 8300 people on the call.  After Murphy gave an overview of what he was doing, there was a Q&A session.  Questioners were lined up by the order in which they queued up.

Most important question - HCR.  Murphy still says he'll vote against it because he's concerned about how the government is going to pay for the reform.  He's especially concerned about its impact on small business.

He's more supportive of the Senate bill because it has less mandates for small business, making it more affordable for them. He's still reading the Senate Bill - he's half-way through the 2000 pages.

The rest of the questions were interesting - unless they were screened out by Murphy's staff, we didn't have any looming crazies on the call.

One caller liked Gillibrand so much that he called Paterson to thank him for appointing her.  Now he's unhappy because she's become too liberal.
Other questions were about Rural Broadband access (Murphy says we're getting federal funds for that); standard deficit worries, pro DADT.

There were some conservative leaning questions, but not regurgitated Conservative talking points.  Questions on Tort reform, too much government interference.

I thought it was a useful experience.  Murphy is very well prepared for the questions and could respond with specifics for each question.

I'm not happy about his not supporting health care.  But I wouldn't be surprised if he is getting a pass on this being a freshman rep in a district that just flipped to Dem 2 election cycles ago.

I'm not happy that he's leaning (4.00 / 2)
against voting for it, either.  I do understand his reasoning for voting against the House bill - it contained tax increases on two of the major industries and employers in his district.  Which to me, is much more understandable than Massa's "standing on principle."  I think we're now at the stage where Murphy has to suck it up, remember he's a Democrat, and vote for the bill.

No Passes (0.00 / 0)
If Murphy doesn't vote for HCR he is useless.  He deserves to be thrown on the junk heap of history, which is undoubtedly where he will wind up.

I respectfully disagree, yet my position on this is the exact (4.00 / 1)
opposite of my position on Stupak -- I'd rather have a Republican that Stupak in the house.  But I want Murphy to continue representing the district.

Murphy does have some serious right-wingers in his district.  I went to one of his town halls in Petersburg where the residents were 2 steps away from being tea partiers.

We'll have to see how this pans out.

I Too (4.00 / 1)
Attended a town hall last summer and saw some of these nut jobs.  However, they are really irrelevant.  Their votes are not in play.  Murphy is not going to win those votes - period, end of story.  Murphy (like Gillibrand before him) won the District by (1) energizing the Democrats, who are growing in numbers in parts of the District; and (2) expanding his support to pick up the old Rockefeller Republicans who really make up the majority of the voters in the District.  If Murphy votes against HCR, he loses the base and he crashes and burns.  If he votes for HCR, he will be a hero to Democrats who will work for him and turn out in big numbers, and he will at least have a fighting chance to win over Independents and Moderate Republicans.  And if he loses, his life goes on but at least it does so with knowledge that he did the right thing.
Scott - WAKE UP!  This is a no-brainer.

This is too important to not pass. (0.00 / 0)
You mean some here are going to excuse Murphy from voting yes on the most important bill before Congress in several generations?! I've been a Dem for 34 years, yet if Murphy votes no on this I will vote against him, no matter who is running, and I will donate to his opponent. This is too important.

What If His Vote Isn't Needed? (4.00 / 1)
I agree that it's too important for reform not to pass. But what if his vote turns out not to be needed?

We can debate which vote would benefit him in his attempt to hold the seat. And if his vote were necessary to passage, I'd understand holding a "no" vote against him. But if Democrats have already secured the votes (which I know is not a sure thing yet, but let's go with the hypothetical), I'm not sure I would understand the purpose of not allowing representatives in marginal districts the discretion of voting in ways that they think helps their reelection prospects. Health care reform would still pass, and there are many other issues where the votes of those legislators could be crucial.

That's just how this game is played: one has to find a balance between strong-arming borderline representatives in order to get things done, and allowing some leeway where it may be hard to hold the seat. It's not an easy task.
