Now that we've vanquished the Slasher, we can turn to the next pathetic embarrassment that calls himself a legislator: Pedro Espada.

Espada's challenger, community organizer Desiree Pilrgim-Hunter, is having a fundraiser on March 22:

Please join us in supporting Desiree Hunter's campaign to bring integrity and accountable leadership to NY's 33rd Senate District. Join with residents of the district and others to support this important campaign for progressive change in Albany. Meet Desiree, hear her vision, ask questions and meet other supporters.

* 6:30pm-8:30pm, Monday, March 22, 2010

* At the home of Miriam Ford and Jack Marth

3853 Cannon Place, Bronx NY 10463 -- Link to Map

RSVP by making a contribution below or email jmarthbx@gmail.com or call (718) 549-4415

If the media is going to take Desiree's challenge seriously, she needs to start raising some cash.  I suggest everyone attend if you can afford it.  Defeating Pedro is going to be a lot harder than defeating the Slasher was, primarily because it appears he is going to have the support of the corrupt Bronx Democratic Party (please prove me wrong, Carl Heastie).  So Desiree is going to need all the help that a truly insurgent campaign needs- please show her some love.

Even if you can't attend -- give $$$ (4.00 / 4)
The linked invitation from Act Blue has a general contribution box as well.  Any amount will help the campaign demonstrate there is widespread support to oust Pedro from office.

This campaign is not relying on the fat cats that are funding Pedro -- see Liz Benjamin's piece on his next fundraiser at this link:

Why don't we have a blog-raiser? (4.00 / 5)

Blog Raiser to Defeat Espada -- great idea! (4.00 / 4)
If someone wants to set up a TAP page -- here is the link to Desiree Pilgrim-Hunter's main Act Blue page.

It's something we've been discussing (4.00 / 3)
we should coordinate with the rest of the NY progressive blogs.

[ Parent ]
I think (4.00 / 1)
it's time for another conference call.

[ Parent ]
Indeed (4.00 / 1)
Let's set it up. This weekend?

[ Parent ]
Sure. (4.00 / 1)
Preferably Saturday, no?

[ Parent ]
Saturday afternoon should be good (4.00 / 1)

[ Parent ]
Alright. (0.00 / 0)
I need to head out, but I'll set it up.

[ Parent ]
Are you freakin' serious? (4.00 / 5)
The Bronx Democratic Party is supporting this scum?  As a loyal Democrat I am horrified.

Yes, we're serious. (4.00 / 4)
I seem to remember reading about the aforementioned corrupt Bronx Democratic Party official crowing about the the Espada coup being a good thing because now the Bronx stands to get more pork.  Make no mistake - pork is all that matters to a lot of people, even if a big chunk ends up going to some made-up charity run by somebody in Espada's family.  I'm about a horrified as you are.

[ Parent ]
Anyone in the Bronx to run for party leadership?.... (4.00 / 1)
Sounds like that party needs a good takeover.  And county machines, even in the Bronx, are small -- a decent community organizer could replace the corrupt leadership on a very low budget.

[ Parent ]
They just had a control turnover (0.00 / 0)
with the so-called "rainbow coalition" that ironically included Ruben Diaz Sr.  I greatly support the idea, but I think it's more feasible to target individual races.  Replacing the entire party would be a HUGE lift.

[ Parent ]
I cannot attend but I contributed a dollar for each day Pedro held up the Senate! (4.00 / 1)
Go Desiree Pilgrim Hunter!

What About (4.00 / 1)
Diaz & Kruger?  They need to go also.  I don't think either one has an opponent.

Big Developments in Challenge of Espada (0.00 / 0)
Liz Benjamin, in her new outpost, broke some big news:

http://capitaltonight.com/2010...

"Activist Desiree Pilgrim-Hunter, who has been mulling a primary challenge to Senate Majority Leader Pedro Espada Jr., is putting the pieces in place for a full-fledged campaign by hiring a fundraiser.

Lisa Hernandez Gioia confirmed she has been in talks with Pilgrim-Hunter for about a month and has agreed to sign on to help her raise money.

"It's important to have good people in Albany and it seems to me that right now not everyone up there in a good person," Hernandez Gioia told me this afternoon in a brief telephone interview."

Pilgrim-Hunter also had discussions with Red Horse Strategies,...
Forand said the firm found Pilgrim-Hunter "very compelling" and believes her challenge to Espada Jr. is "winnable." However, he reluctantly decided in the end that Red Horse couldn't work for her directly due to a possible conflict with another client, LG candidate Bill Samuels.

Samuels is launching an independent expenditure committee that he says will spend $250,000 apiece on two "reform" candidates. I asked Forand if it's possible Pilgrim-Hunter would be one of the two. "Yes," he replied. "It's very possible."

The fact that Red Horse and Samuels, who used to be the DSCC finance chair, would consider helping Pilgrim-Hunter is very telling.
