Mike Arcuri, You Cannot be This Stupid

by: Roatti

Fri Mar 19, 2010 at 00:21:32 AM EDT

Dear Congressman Arcuri,

Your recent flip-flop in the wrong direction on healthcare is a move so politically stupid, it is hard to summon the words to adequately describe it.

The only plausible reason you have to vote against Health Care Reform would be to possibly de-motivate the GOP base against you this coming November.  But there's one slight glitch in that strategy: you already voted for the House Health Care bill.

The GOP attack ad on that issue has already been cut.

This way, you have the worst of both worlds- the tea-baggers hate you for voting for it once already, and now the Democratic base is going to desert you.

Furthermore, if Health Care Reform dies, you will be the first to go.  In 1994, did all those Democrats who stood against the Clinton plan get a reprieve in the midterm elections?  No.  In fact, it was the moderates who opposed it who mostly got slaughtered.

Additionally, the consensus Health Care Reform bill is more fiscally conservative than the House version you voted for.  There is no legitimate policy reason for a conservative Democrat to support the more liberal earlier house version and then vote against the more conservative consensus version.  Are you really going to be able to explain that to the voters in your district?  Even if people don't agree with everything politicians stand for, they hate someone they disagree with some of the time much less than a politician who flip-flops too much.  Even someone as intellectually challenged as George W. Bush understood that.

In sum, please don't be a complete moron.  Vote for the bill.

All the best,

Roatti

UPDATE:  The WFP is now threatening to withhold its endorsement of Arcuri if he votes no and SEIU will actively promote a primary challenger if Arcuri indeed votes no.  Again Mike, don't be a friggin moron.

massive robocall operation (4.00 / 3)
I got a robocall earlier this week, from some group with a name like Citizens United. The down-to-earth sounding guy spouted lie after lie, total fear mongering, telling me to call Arcuri to tell him to stop this evil health care bill. I don't even live in Arcuri's district (I live near it). They must have blanketed his district and surrounding areas with these calls.

My guess is that Arcuri buckled under the onslaught of wingnut and teabagger outrage. But on the other hand, he has to know that these robocalls are based on outright lies.

He doesn't seem to have much integrity or backbone. I'm not optimistic that he'll change his mind. But maybe if he gets flooded with outraged constituents who let him know he's made the wrong choice, and that he'll get slammed in November by the Repubs -- and his apparent opponent is positioning himself as a moderate, not very good Republican (of course once he's in DC he'll march lockstep with the wingnuts) -- no matter what he does, he can get pressured the other way. Sad really but that seems to be the only way this might change.

apparently....he is (4.00 / 3)
...after nearly losing his reelection effort last time by virtually taking his reelection for granted...and now deciding that the best way to improve his chances for reelection this year is to...abandon his base and flip the bird at labor, the AARP, Catholic nuns, health care professionals and the Democratic activists who got him elected in the first place...he thinks he's going to get some Republican and conservative independents to vote for him by pandering to them (hint, Mr. Arcuri, most Republicans and conservative indepedents will not vote for you no matter which way you vote on this, and a lot of your Democratic base will turn on you if you don't vote for it).

In fact, this particular Democrat plans to no longer give money to the local, state or national Democratic party, which helps to support people like Arcuri, if this bill is not passed. Talk about willingness to cut of your foot to spite your face...Arcuri just doesn't seem to be very smart in the way he's playing this.

Acuri: All your base are belong to us (4.00 / 6)
I think the Congressman doesn't understand that progressives will decidedly not contribute to his campaign and not pull a lever for him come November, so his goose is cooked only if he votes no. The assumption that Acuri must be making is that he can count on the progressive base, but that just crazy.

Democrats in the area need a new candidate. (4.00 / 3)
Unfortunately Arcuri has proven too stupid to retain office.

This district is easy for a Democrat to win, if he doesn't act like an idiot.  Unfortunately....

Any suggestions as to who? (0.00 / 0)

We don't even have to work against Acuri - just focus our (4.00 / 2)
time, money, and attention elsewhere - where we can do some good and let Acuri fend for himself.

Sorry, (0.00 / 0)
I never can spell A-R-C-U-R-I correctly.

Arcuri *is* that stupid. Find a primary opponent. (4.00 / 3)
This is the man who went to a town hall in Tompkins County saying he was supporting the Military Commissions Act (IIRC), or maybe it was the FISA Amendments, and that he hadn't read the bill.  He got an earful.

I've met him.  He's really nice.  But he's STOOPID.  I'm pretty sick of it.

Tough district to win (4.00 / 2)
The combined R/I/C lines still have about a 42,000 voter edge over the D/WFP/G lines ("G" is for Green Party), as of last November.  That's down from the 49,000 voter edge in November of 2008, and the 55,000 voter edge in November of 2006, but it's still very large.  There are about 76,000 blanks, meaning any Democrat needs to get about 78% of the blanks in order to overcome the registration deficit.

In 2008, Obama won the district 50-48, while Arcuri won by 52-48.  The same Republican, who got a late start in '08, appears to be running again.

If Arcuri's vote makes the difference, I say primary the crap out of him.  If not, I think we need to give him a pass -- assuming he works his @$$ off to improve upon what is really not a great healthcare bill.

I don't think he wants to improve it (0.00 / 0)
I think he wants people to stop paying attention to him.

Primary him (4.00 / 1)
What good is a Democrat in office who acts like a Republican and votes like one?

Whether or not his vote makes a difference, I thought the whole point was to elect great progressive candidates - not "good eonugh" ones.

Tax the Church.

Not ONE Democrat should be given a pass for not voting for this bill (and that includes mine also).  This is just too big for us to forgive them.  I agree with Paco, no $ to DCCC and DSCC and to those members of Congress who vote No.

call him! (0.00 / 0)
Just spoke to his CAMPAIGN office... they said "we're his campaign office, not his Congressional office"  - I asked if they thought he was planning to run again if he voted "no".
They need to hear from us.  315-733-1400

They heard from me (4.00 / 3)
He is firmly voting no, so, I told them they could no longer count on me as their campaign contact in Tompkins County, and that they didn't need to try to replace me, because there would be no campaign here, given that vote.

I just posted a Diary (4.00 / 2)
Just heard on "The Ed Show" that Scott Murphy is a firm YES!  So is Elliot Engel.
