Shocking! Startling! Hypocrisy and Pay-to-Play

by: Andrew C. White

Thu Mar 25, 2010 at 21:18:49 PM EDT

Yesterday brought the Shocking! Startling! revelation that the Democratic majority in the New York State Senate just don't get it.

I know. I know. Hard to believe that these paragons of virtue would engage in the exact same pay-to-play high dollar fund raising tactics as the fossilized Republican former majority did over the last several decades but it is disappointingly true.

That the Republican minority is decrying this fund raising effort with shrill cries of...

Look! Look! They are doing the exact same thing we've been successfully doing for decades and it'll keep us in the minority until our grandchildren are as ancient as we are! The Horror! The Horror!

... is so hypocritical it makes me puke.

The fact that the Democrats are doing the same damn thing the Republicans did for decades is so hypocritical it makes me wanna puke even more.

At least I'm not alone kneeling in front of the porcelain alter.

This cannot go on.

Andrew C. White :: Shocking! Startling! Hypocrisy and Pay-to-Play
It must stop now. This year. This November.

We at RebootNY are committed to reforming Albany. We believe the evidence is abundantly clear that this can only be done by electing new State Senators.

Yesterday's revelation does nothing but support our position.

Yesterday's revelation also makes clear that it is going to cost money to do the job.

Make no mistake. Despite all of this being front page news they will still get that money. People will pay to play.

We at RebootNY will be supporting challengers to as many of these failed Senators as we can find legitimate reformers to oppose them. We will be as careful as we can to back no frauds. There is no Blue Dog Caucus for the State Senate and there is no argument in favor of backing Blue Dog equivalent State Senators. If a candidate will not commit to real reform once elected they will not get our support.

In order to do that, in order to overcome the

$25,000 - friend of frauds
$50,000 - Supporter of more of the Same
$75,000 - Chairman of What's in it for me?

We need your support.

While we will happily accept your

$25,000 - Friend of Fair Government
$50,000 - Supporter of Wholesale Change
$75,000 - Chairman of the Committee to Reform Rules, Reapportionment and Clean Money, Clean Elections

We will also happily accept the average working and unfortunately not working New Yorkers

$25 - Fed up with these frauds
$50 - Sick of the status quo
$75 - Churning in the gut over all of this

contributions as well.

I hate having to ask for contributions after this sort of slimy behavior has taken place but there is no way to get enough new committed reformers elected to force change down their throats without raising the cash to compete with these people.

I do however promise to talk with you here on The Albany Project whether you contribute or not so you don't need to pay to play in my illustrious sandbox.

But please do contribute to the cause. This stuff is just too sickening to let it continue.

...what are we going to do?  Elect more Democrats, or elect more Republicans, or...?

How about... (4.00 / 3)
How about we elect less incumbents?  This appears to be a case of a poisoned well, and the best solution is to flush the system clean.

Elect committed reformers (4.00 / 1)
As a liberal Democrat and the Chair of my town's Democratic Committee it is certainly always my hope to elect more Democrats but it is also always my hope to elect better Democrats.

In this case however I am committed to doing everything I can to elect new Senators that are committed to forcing real reform in the Senate as their first priority. Without changing how our dysfunctional government does business we will not ever solve the economic and social problems that have been festering for the last several decades.

This isn't about party as it is proven that both parties lack the will to change the dysfunction. We've seen that beyond a shadow of a doubt over the course of this last year in the Senate.

We need all New Yorkers to stand up and stand up together to demand real reform and the best way to do that is for each voter to act on what the polls have been showing all year and that is that we not only want to "throw all the bums out" but that we want to throw "our bum" out too.

Peace,

Andrew

It takes two to tango. (0.00 / 0)
We can only feign outage at politicians' behavior for so long, when we know that people representing other powerful political entities (i.e., union officials, lobbyists, etc) can and do fork it over on request.

"Throwing the bums out" won't change the political landscape, unfortunately.  You need to attack an entire entrenched power structure, including scads of unelected officials who play this game.  And dumping Senator X won't scare his playmates; they'll simply walk up and explain the rules of the game to Senator X's replacement.  (The only reason why these playmates - ie union officials - are "shocked, shocked" at the letter is because usually the game is not played so formally and openly.)

I don't mean to be negative, but we're in a catch 22 as Democrats.  You can't come out against the unions' behavior unless you want to be thought of as anti-organizing and anti-working-class and anti-education etc.  And Republicans can't come against corporate lobbyists' behavior because they don't want to be thought of as anti-business, anti-free-enterprise, etc.

I would just like to play devil's advocate and ask the question: is yet another "patriotic money drive for democracy" going to produce results, and what, exactly are the specific results we want to see in two years' time?  Let's lay them out.  Also, who really needs to have pressure put on them?  When you're trying to dig up a huge boulder, you have to "find the edges," and that translates into finding out and naming which local movers and shakers keep providing rank and file support to the status quo.

On the Reboot NY site I'd like to see more information about the "lives and loves" of the top local donors to every single "bum" we'd like to "throw out."  Who is John DeFrancisco's bestest homeboy?  that sort of thing.

we have started digging into the financial records a little but need to expand that greatly... and publish it prominently as you suggest.
