And It's Over. For Real This Time

It's been that kind of year. Looks like we're finally done though.

Congress completes overhaul of health care

Capping an epic struggle, congressional Democrats put the final touches Thursday to historic legislation enshrining health care as the right of every citizen. Republicans vowed to campaign for repeal in the fall election season, drawing a quick retort from President Barack Obama: "I welcome that fight."

The president spoke in Iowa as the Senate voted 56-43 for legislation making changes, including better benefits for seniors and low-income and middle-class families, to the bill he signed into law with a flourish at the White House on Tuesday.

The House added its approval a few hours later, 220-207, clearing the way for Obama's signature on the second of two bills that marked the culmination of what the president called "a year of debate and a century of trying" to ensure coverage for nearly all in a nation where millions lack it. Obama is expected to sign the legislation early next week.

Onward.

Until we attach (4.00 / 2)
the public option, revocation of the antitrust exemption, and a national exchange to the next defense appropriations bill!  Wohoo!

Citizens for a Public Option? (4.00 / 1)
It seems to me that we need an organization that will relentlessly advocate for and pressure Democrats into supporting a public option (and revocation of the antitrust exemption). Such an organization would aggressive seek, starting right now, to get Representatives and Senators to submit a stand-alone bill AND, simultaneously, seek to attach this as an amendment to each and every single bill going forward...until it's enacted.

There's a good article over at (4.00 / 1)
The Washington Post about some of the behind the scenes effort.  I notice that there seems to be some crumbling of the monolithic Republican stance towards it - a few are making noises about "keeping some parts" if they get the majority.  I have a feeling that by the time that chance rolls around, they won't go anywhere near it.

It isn't even close to being over (4.00 / 1)
Rule 3F (with apologies to Henry Stern): There is no such thing as a permanent solution.

Furthermore, this bill leaves a LOT to be desired.  Where is the repeal of McCarran-Ferguson (exemption from anti-trust regulation)?  Where is any plan to reduce prescription drug costs (the way this closes the doughnut hole actually makes drugs more expensive)?  What about the estimated 15 million people who STILL won't be covered?

Over?  We're just getting started.

good point... (0.00 / 0)
...to me, this bill is just a start (a modest one at that)...until we get universal health care for all citizens, including a single-payer system or other public option.

Teabagger syndrome is contagious. (4.00 / 2)
Sen. Lamar Alexander last night:

"The Democratic majority decided, well look, while we're at it, let's have another Washington takeover," said Senator Lamar Alexander, Republican of Tennessee and a former federal education secretary. "Let's take over the federal student loan program."

Republicans standing up for the politically-connected parasitic middlemen (0.00 / 0)
as usual.

That sign is why this ISN'T over. (0.00 / 0)
Medicare is, charitably, a ponzie scheme.  However, many Medicare recipients, who have the time and resources to vote in every general and primary election and be very active politically, are not going to stand still while this program is looted when they don't have other options.

Remember the Medicare Catastrophic Coverage Act of 1988?  (http://content.healthaffairs.org/cgi/reprint/9/3/75.pdf)
