Today in state government

by: Michael Bouldin

Behold the majesty of representative government.

Exhibit A: Democratic Senator Ruben Diaz about the most recent - as of this writing, no guarantee that this is current - meltdown by Democratic Senator Kevin Parker:

"He needs help," "He lost control of himself."

Exhibit B: Parker responds by calling Diaz a homophobe. Which is, you know, kinda true. Certainly the good Reverend thinks more about gay sex then do actual gay people; take it from me.

Exhibit C: Democratic Majority Leader Pedro Espada gets hit with yet another lawsuit courtesy of Attorney General Andrew Cuomo, this time alleging yet another rip-off of widows and orphans, in a matching set with Cuomo's recent suit alleging the embezzlement of thirteen more than fourteen million dollars by Pedro. Needless to say, Pedro is presently howling victimhood.

New Yorkers have some hard choices to make about the people we send to represent us.

Do we though? (4.00 / 1)
Aside from Pedro, do the others have any challengers?

Not that I'm aware of. (4.00 / 1)
But like they say, Rome wasn't built in a day.

Parker (4.00 / 1)
also called DeFrancisco a "white supremacist," which is probably not a very accurate label even for someone who's clueless about white privilege in American society.

I watched the tape, and it seems DeFrancisco was engaging in some very self-indulgent (and I'm not sure how relevant) suburbanite whining that his feewings were hurt by the nominee's blog comment from last year about minorities and women being left out of the white man's club.  Wahh.  You could almost hear the tiny violins playing.  Still not sure why DeFrancisco felt the need to bring that up.  How was it relevant to what we needed to know about the nominee?  Unfortunately it was just a red rag to Parker's bull...

So, please by all means add DeFrancisco onto the chain of self-indulgent fools here.

No question. (0.00 / 0)
However, DeFrancisco as a member of the minority simply doesn't matter. Parker, unfortunately, does.

DeFrancisco is my senator, so it matters to me, anyway...

Speaking of Pedro's Challenger (4.00 / 1)
Desiree Pilgrim-Hunter picked up a huge endorsement from organized labor today.
http://capitaltonight.com/2010...

RWDSU President Stuart Appelbaum called Pilgrim-Hunter a "strong advocate and a smart advocate" with a "moral compass."

He insisted the union's decision to make public its support of her today was not motivated by the AG's filing of his second lawsuit against Espada.

"Desiree got involved in this race before any of this legal action came down," Appelbaum said. "She was willing to do it even when she thought the odds were formidable. She's didn't wait until Espada looked more vulnerable."

"That's the nature of who she is," he continued. "She has gotten involved in fights for things when she thought it was right. She got involved here because she thought the district wasn't getting the kind of representation it deserved."

Indeed -- those of us in the 33rd Senate District have not gotten the representation we deserve for far too long. Don't forget -- even though this is Pedro's first term representing the 33rd, we were represented by Efrain Gonzalez, currently waiting to report to prison for embezzlement. Enough with the crooks and embezzlers!
We deserve Desiree!
