SD-32: Charlie Ramos to Challenge Ruben "the Bigot" Diaz Sr.

by: Roatti

Wed May 12, 2010 at 23:20:26 PM EDT

Mole333 of the Daily Gotham is reporting that the possibly self-hating and certainly anti-gay bigot otherwise known as Ruben Diaz Sr. is going to get a primary challenge from a former William Thompson, Charlie Ramos:

One of the most venomously anti-gay members of the New York State Senate is not some Teabagger Republican, but is pseudo-Democrat, friend of Hiram "Slasher Monserrate" Ruben Diaz, Sr. This guy is one of the prime examples of what is wrong with Albany.

(snip)

Diaz is also anti-choice and opposed to life-saving stem cell research.

You can also meet Charlie Ramos in person at a Democracy for NYC event. From DFNYC:

You are invited to join

Charlie Ramos Jr.

CANDIDATE FOR THE 32nd SENATORIAL DISTRICT

Charlie Ramos Jr. is a community organizer in the Bronx with a passion for civil rights, community empowerment, and government reform.

Charlie recently served as the Bronx liaison for Bill Thompson, former Comptroller of the City of New York. Charlie has been a grassroots community organizer for over 7 years, working for organizations such as America Votes, the Pennsylvania Statewide Latino Coalition, the United States Hispanic Leadership Institute, and Wal-Mart Watch, a nationwide campaign to reveal the harmful impact of Walmart. Charlie was an organizer in the successful movement urging the appointment of Justice Sonya Sotomayor to the Supreme Court.

Charlie is challenging Reverend Ruben Diaz Sr. - the incumbent Senator who has been a vocal anti-gay, anti-choice conservative Democrat. Diaz Sr. was a part of the "Gang of 3" that started the coup in the State Senate that brought government to a standstill last year. Charlie is proud to be part of the movement to change the way Albany works.

From his website, Ramos appears to to be pro-gay rights, but doesn't explicitly endorse marriage equality.  He does appear to be pro choice.  Regardless, he would be a huge improvement over the incumbent.  Here's hoping we hear a lot more from Charlie Ramos soon.

I've met Charlie (4.00 / 1)
and I can vouch that he is the real deal.  He is a community activist, a progressive, and a good government wonk.  This is another great opportunity in the Bronx to not only boot an awful State Senator but to replace him with a great community activist that understands the concerns of working people and will advocate for them accordingly.

Nice! (0.00 / 0)
I don't really know much about him other than that he's not Diaz, so I'm very happy that you approve of him

I have a post in me that I'll put up sometime soon (4.00 / 1)
Talking about how the slate of candidates this cycle in both primaries and general elections are both alternative candidates AND better candidates.  I think that when we reached a critical mass of frustration with the state, it really did something at the local levels to attract some great candidates into these races.

Right you are (4.00 / 1)
Keep 'em coming, this was a very informative post.

I feel you're right also about having reached a critical mass.  Some of these new candidates are being called "opportunists," and a lot of local races have the old guard lining up behind the status quo.

But really, when you look at the last few years in New York State, that status quo really must be changed.  And with the public's mind now focused on changing state government more than ever, taking advantage of that opportunity is, I feel, a noble pursuit.

Especially for folks like Charlie Ramos.  His simple vision statement on his website is a breath of fresh air.  Reminds me of Luke Martland up here in the 46th.  It makes you wonder how DINOs like Diaz and Breslin ever got elected in the first place, and how they've stayed in so long.

2010 is going to be a good year, but a tough fight.  Keep up the good work!
