It's Lazio. It's Over.

by: Roatti

Wed Jun 02, 2010 at 17:29:10 PM EDT

The NY Christian Nationalist Party GOP has chosen former Congressman Rick Lazio as its nominee for Governor.  While Lazio is clearly the safe choice for the GOP, being neither a Dixiecrat (Levy) nor an utter and complete freak job (Paladino), he categorically cannot win the race for New York Governor in 2010.  He lacks the energy and fundraising prowess that would be necessary to even have a chance at beating Cuomo in such a heavily-Democratic state as NY and his past electoral history is underwhelming to say the least.

So let's pop that Chanpagne.  I'm officially calling this race for Cuomo.  Barring some huge unknown scandal, it's over.

Paladino (4.00 / 2)
Carl Paladino said that he'd seek a "tea party" line if Lazio was given the Conservative Party line. Now that Lazio has both the Conservative and Republican lines, does anyone know if Paladino still wants to do this?

It appears (4.00 / 1)
there's an ad on Craigslist asking for paid petition signature collectors to get the Tea Party their own line on the ballot on Paladino's behalf.  This was posted back on May 20th though...

Ooh, and then there's this from Daily Politics (4.00 / 2)
Nevertheless, an air of confusion continued to hang over the afternoon. Cox at one point insisted that Levy would now be backing Lazio and the rest of the Republican ticket, but that assertion was quickly contradicted by Team Levy.

"The vote was just today and Steve is taking a break, thinking about next steps. He has not made any decisions on supporting another candidate, and has not ruled out running on another line. We're not saying he has plans to do that -- we're just saying he hasn't ruled it out," said Levy spokesman Josh Hills.

That would be the icing on the cake (4.00 / 1)
if Levy and/or Paladino split the wingnut vote even further

It's Cuomo's to lose (4.00 / 3)
As long as he stays behind his own podium, Cuomo will win.

Barring some huge unknown scandal (4.00 / 5)
You just had to remind me that I still have a Spitzer hangover.  Cuomo had better not put us through that again.

But enough negativity.  You're most definitely right: it's Cuomo by a furlong at this point, so we do have reason to be hopeful for the first time in a long time.

PS:  We should introduce a measure officially renaming the GOP the Christian Nationalist Party.  I love that idea :-)

lol thanks (4.00 / 1)
just calling 'em as I see 'em.  And Spitzer (and Paterson) are exactly why I put tht disclaimer in there.

[ Parent ]
and, hey, don't forget Massa (4.00 / 2)
plus, there is always the chance that, in absence of a competitive political race, the press chooses to focus on Cuomo's divorce from a member of the Kennedy clan.  Never can go wrong with a story about the same-sex fantasies of Congressmen and military commanders... or a political story that involves sex and the Kennedy clan.

[ Parent ]
Yikes (0.00 / 0)
I totally forgot about that

[ Parent ]
The difference between Andrew and Eliot (4.00 / 1)
that may be most important is that Andrew is much less vulnerable to harm if he has similar experience on his extracurricular resume.

Eliot's problem was being Jewish. It's just not possible for a Jew to surround himself with the kind of loyalty that an Italian can ;)
If something like this is in Andrew's past, it would never be found out! LOL!

(disclaimer to ward off the ethnicity police: I'm Italian)

[ Parent ]
Yeah, I was gonna say... (4.00 / 1)
but if you're in la familia it's ok

[ Parent ]
The politics of ethnicity: (4.00 / 2)
Italian: "Never let anyone outside the family know what you're thinking."        - Don Corleone, a fictional character.

Jewish: "If presidents can't do it to their wives, they do it to their country."       - Mel Brooks, a real character!

Yogi & Mario (4.00 / 4)
Both have said "it's not over till the fat lady sings" and it's not over till it's over."  We can't sit on our behinds thinking this election is already won by Andrew (think Martha Coakley and Massachusetts) but must make sure it's won by him.  Today is June 2nd and the election isn't until November 2nd which is exactly 5 months away.  Anything can happen in 5 months so, as I said, don't sit there.

True enough, (4.00 / 2)
but Coakley was a really terrible candidate. She barely campaigned.

[ Parent ]
Yeah, I would still advise Cuomo to not take a vacation (4.00 / 4)
until the campaign is over and also to read his Yankees news every day

[ Parent ]
Cuomo still has to earn my vote. (0.00 / 0)
I'm blue through and through, but I still vote for the candidate. we'll see what he has to say.  If I like it he'll get the vote, if I don't than I'll look at Hawkins or another 3rd party. by the way, Not sure if anybody caught the line from the crazy angry white guy Paladino, but it was good, hopefully Lazio is too stupid to catch on to it, but Paladino referred to AC as "status Cuomo" which was actually pretty good for someone so pissed off at the world.

My 2 cents: (4.00 / 1)
don't throw your vote away

[ Parent ]
You don't want Rick Lazio. (4.00 / 1)
Enough said.

[ Parent ]
We need to win the whole ticket... (4.00 / 1)
Two Senators, Governor, LG, AG, State Senate, State Assembly.  Andrew's strong lead may be helpful for downticket races, but only if people VOTE. If we lose enthusiasm, or assume that he doesn't need our votes, then the whole ticket suffers.

What I don't understand is (4.00 / 1)
Lazio's a fool, but he's not totally stupid. He knows he's running a suicide mission. What does he get out of it? Does he get to skim some of the campaign funds?

He gets people to pay attention to him, somewhat (4.00 / 1)
how else could he get that?

[ Parent ]
Since Cuomo apears to be running as a Republican, does it (0.00 / 0)
matter?

Given that his current attempts to channel Chris Christie are at odds with the prior 5o years of his life, I would expect this to be, at best, a bit of a tough sell.
