SD-40: Assemblyman Greg Ball Brings AZ Immigration Law To NY

by: DeWitt

Thu Jun 03, 2010 at 15:46:32 PM EDT

Previously, The Ball Monitor asked if Assemblyman Greg Ball would side with mainstream Republican leaders in opposing Arizona's extremist immigration law or if he would resort to his usual demagoguery.  We now have our answer.  Here is the latest from the desk of Greg Ball, Ball Pushes 'Arizona Law' to Deport Criminal Illegal Aliens:

Assemblyman Greg Ball (R, C, I - Patterson) announced on the floor of the New York State Assembly that he will re-introduce a revised version of his 287(G) Immigration Legislation. Ball announced his intentions during a floor debate of Assembly Resolution 1282, sponsored by Assemblyman Adriano Espaillat, to denounce Arizona's new immigration law, S1070.

Electing Greg Ball to the New York State Senate will bring our great state one step closer to abandoning the New York tradition of tolerance and becoming a racially polarized community.  Before casting their votes, residents of the 40th Senate District should think very carefully about what this will mean.

Throughout his career, Assemblyman Ball has couched his anti-immigrant crusade in terms of protecting the public from "criminal illegal aliens". However, it is far from clear that immigration, even illegal immigration, is associated with actual street crime.  The Associated Press reports that "the top four big cities in America with the lowest rates of violent crime are all in border states: San Diego, Phoenix, El Paso and Austin, according to a new FBI report. And an in-house Customs and Border Protection report shows that Border Patrol agents face far less danger than street cops in most U.S. cities."

Indeed, a ham-fisted crackdown on immigration will be counterproductive.  In his overheated public statements, Ball conveniently fails to consider the probability that his proposals will only make areas with illegal immigrant populations more dangerous by further isolating those populations from the larger society and discouraging any kind of cooperation with the police.   This is a point made by law enforcement professionals across the country, including none other than the Arizona Association of Chiefs of Police, the career police officials that would be responsible for executing Arizona's flawed policy.

In order to satisfy anti-immigrant zealots, Arizona has passed an ineffective law to address a non-existent problem.  For it's troubles, The Grand Canyon State has become a pariah and the City of Phoenix alone reports that boycotts spurred by the new law have already cost them $90 million, according to the Christian Science Monitor.

Greg Ball seeks to bring the same derision down upon New York with his attempt to impose an unfair immigration law here.  While it might be good for snagging appearances on NBC, immigrant baiting is bad for immigrant and native New Yorkers alike.

Seems to be an issue that resonates with Ball's (0.00 / 0)
constituents.  Not sure it carries much weight in NYS as a whole.  We aren't right across the border from Mexico, which may be a hallowing (if not a failed) state.

Illegal Aliens Cost Us All. (0.00 / 0)
As a former Arizona resident I can remember what a huge problem illegal immigration posed some ten years ago when I attended Arizona State University.  I am sure it has only gotten worse since then.  Drug trafficking, gun smuggling, human trafficking, murders, rapes and general disorderly conducted by the hands of illegals happens there regularly.

Since returning to NY, I was shocked to see the amount of problems that are caused by illegals here.  The burden is great, not only to our justice system, but also to our hospitals, schools and social programs, all that were intended to help American CITIZENS and LEGAL IMMIGRANTS.  How much added expense and subsequent tax burden must we as tax payers absorb on their behalf?  What is fair here?  How much money of the state budget goes in assistance to illegals who do not pay into the system?  Programs like Food Stamps, WIC, Section 8, and Welfare are just a few of the programs that are highly impacted.  Many of the illegals have learned how to evade paying taxes and work the system to their advantage.

As an independent and concerned voter, I have yet to see a single idea introduced from the left at any level of government that addresses the issue of illegal immigration in any sort of honorable capacity.  There is a lot of misconception that has been spun about the AZ immigration bill, much of it coming from people or organizations on the left that never even bothered to read the bill before forming an opinion (like Eric Holder and Nancy Pelosi).  This is a true shame and a direct reflection of how incompetent and out of touch with reality the people on the left are in general and especially those in Albany and Washington.

There is no question that immigration is an issue that must be dealt with.  But it needs to be dealt with in a manner that makes sense and will involve some difficult decision making.  That may be too tall of an order for many of the gorillas, I mean our legislative representives, currently residing in Washington and Albany.  It seems that the polar opposite of common sense is what is being exercised in both the liberal controlled government, media and politics these days.  For those of you who are confused by this, the opposite of common sense is known as nonsense.  Just the fact that the NYS legislature is concerning itself with a bill to denounce another state's law instead of focusing on the issues that face New Yorkers is evidence of of this.  How truly sad.

DeWitt, I have read many of your posts and it seems that you have a real hardon for Mr. Ball.  People like Sheldon Silver are the real problem in Albany.  Try focusing your energy on his corrupt ass.  Mr. Ball has done nothing but serve his country as a Captain in the Air Force and energetically seeks to addresses the issues that others seem too afraid or too incompetent to tackle.  I both admire and appreciate him for his service to our country, to my district, and to the issues that should be on the legislative agenda.  He represents what I hope to be the beginning of upcoming coup that is about to take place in Albany and Washington this November and again in November 2012.  The only way to bring forth meaningful change is to shake up the establishment by removing all long term sitting legislators like that incomptent baffoon Sheldon Silver.
