July 11 - The More Important Deadline

by: jmcbride

Wed Jun 30, 2010 at 13:49:50 PM EDT

How many solicitations for donations to a federal race have you received in the past few days? The New York State deadline may be more important to your daily life. (The filing date is 7/15, but the cut-off date is 7/11.)

Support the best of the bunch -   New York Senate Challengers 2010 - these are worthy of your support!

In many ways, our task of electing a better state senate is more important than the federal races.  We can't afford to keep the current bunch of turkeys around next year.

You need to dig deep and give your political dollars to New York State Senate candidates:

Just some of the issues for the state legislature:
Frakking, or how to avoid a Gulf of Mexico type disaster in the Catskills and Southern Tier
Property Taxes Something has got to give, it should be fair
Marriage Equality and a host of other issues that need to be addressed - better - for the LGBT community
Mass Transit  Do you go to work? How do you get there
Public Education How much will it cost? Whose taxes will pay for Education?
Housing Rent Stabilization that works. Foreclosure reform.

These are State issues, not federal issues.  To have your voice heard on these issues we must have a responsive and effective state government.

Links to the candidates after the flip.

Here's a list of the best of the State Senate Candidates.  I have not asked these candidates for a pledge on reform, but each has made reform of state government, the senate, ethics and elections a central part of their campaign.  That gives them a mention here.

Regina Calcaterra SD-1
Lynn Nunes  SD-10
Tony Avella SD-11
Charlie Ramos SD-32
Desire Hunter SD-33
David Carlucci SD-38
Mike Kaplowitz SD-40
Didi Barrett SD-41
Pam Mackesey SD-53
Robin Wilt SD-56
Cynthia Appleton SD-59

They are all Democrats.  I know of one Republican candidate who people tell me is good, but reform does not appear on the website.  There are Democratic challengers missing from this list; the reform agenda appears to be missing from their campaigns.

A great list! (0.00 / 0)
And notice how it incorporates both our leaders of reform in Democratic primaries as well as our best pick-up opportunities through the state.  They are all worthy of our financial support and I'll be throwing a few bones to some of them.

FYI (0.00 / 0)
Kaplowitz is missing on the actual Reboot ActBlue page.

Yeah, can't be helped at the moment (0.00 / 0)
Kap does not have an Actblue account.  People will have to go to his site and contribute there.  Or come to the fundraiser at our house on July 10.

Let's not forget Igor Oberman (0.00 / 0)

Dropped Out (0.00 / 0)
I heard that he dropped out.

The Calcaterra campaign stopped using actblue. Please direct any donations directly through her website: http://www.reginacalcaterra.co...

What a great reminder (4.00 / 1)
Thanks for redirecting us to the races that really matter for New Yorkers, where we have to get a functioning Senate this November, or I don't know what we'll do.  Thanks for including Cynthia Appleton in SD59, because this is a real sleeper of a race.  The Republicans have a three-way primary, and it looks quite likely, thanks to NY's fusion voting, that they will be splitting their votes three ways come November, with different candidates on the Republican, Conservative, and an independent Tea Party line.  Cynthia Appleton is a true reformer who completely understands the need to remake the State Senate.  She is also a proven vote-getter as a 3-term village trustee in a place where Republicans have a 3:1 registration advantage.  Add to that the fact that Volker, the retiring incumbent, lost the Erie County portion of the district and only won because he ran up huge margins in the rural counties (all of Wyoming, portions of Livingston and Ontario counties). Now we have a candidate from Wyoming County who can cut into those rural margins. Like I said, the sleeper race of the cycle.
