SD-59: Working Families Party endorses Cindy Appleton

by: Adama D. Brown

Fri Jul 02, 2010 at 02:32:48 AM EDT

As many of you may know, getting the Working Families Party endorsement isn't a given for a Democratic candidate: the WFP has their own very vigorous vetting process. (Say that three times fast.) So the only people who get that ballot are the ones who deserve to be there.

I'm pleased to announce that here in the 59th State Senate district, the WFP has endorsed Cynthia Appleton for the New York State Senate.

Now, the decision has been made in the 59th not to carry petitions for an independent ballot line, so the Democratic and WFP lines are it. Now with the Republicans poised to in all likelihood ticket split, that could be all we need. But without other support, all we're doing is sitting on about two square inches of ballot real estate.

We need money to make this campaign happen. We're on the edge of paying for our first rounds of direct mail and possibly some local radio. Donations are up to $1000 on ActBlue--I'd like to make that $2000 before the July 11th deadline for contribution reporting. Can any of you TAPpers spare a ten dollar bill for us?

Donate to Cynthia Appleton for New York State Senate

Seriously, you're WFP bashing?

I've literally watched it happen. Electoral fusion=corruption, 100% of the time.

Working Families Party Endorsement (0.00 / 0)
I've participated in the endorsement process of the WFP as a Democratic candidate for office, and I can tell you that at no point was any monetary contribution asked for or implied.  Every interaction I had with WFP members and officers dealt with ideology and policy, nothing else.

Cynthia is a great candidate and we in the 59th are lucky to have her run and come November, I think she'll make a great senator.

The WFP is a pretty clean group, as far as I'm aware. (0.00 / 0)
While I don't disagree with you in regards to other ballot lines, I'm not aware of any case where someone has "bought" the WFP line for a contribution. The worst thing I can say about them is that in the past they were focused on economic issues to the exclusion of other things, but that seems to have changed.

I am. (0.00 / 0)
Like I said, I've seen it happen. I can't speak for the state party I guess but the WNY contingent can easily be bought and paid for by Steve Pigeon, and often is.

And to that end, I don't mean they ask you to write a check to the party. I mean that members of the executive council wake up with an envelope of cash in their mailbox.

All I know is that on three occasions that I can count, we 100% had the WFP council votes for an endorsement and then we didn't get it. Every time it was against a Pigeonista. Every time we lost the same voters. Every time we weren't given a reason. Bill Stachowski has the endorsement of virtually every union in existence, but last I heard (and correct me if I'm wrong) the WFP still hasn't endorsed him. Gee I wonder why.

At least give the people a primary and don't do these bullshit council-based endorsements.
