Fight Back NY Campaign Against Stachowski a Big Mistake

by: BingChester

Tue Jul 06, 2010 at 16:32:56 PM EDT

Don't get me wrong.  I really like Fight Back NY, a PAC started by Tim Gill and other major LGBT donors that intends to help take down bag Democrats.  I like the fact that they're working to knock off Democrats who voted against marriage equality.  And I like the fact that they're willing to work outside party structures and create their own infrastructure that supports progressive change.  Unfortunately, I have to take issue with their decision today to target Bill Stachowski as their second major target in the campaign for marriage equality (with Monserrate being the first).

Bill Stackowski is a bad Democrat.  That much we know.  He voted against marriage equality, he's not very popular in his district, and lately he's been holding up the budget by his insistence on a pure and uncompromosing version of the SUNY flexibility bill.  But in 2010, it's not good enough to simply say "This is a Bad Democrat".  As I said on this blog many months ago, we need Better Democrats .  And the man in the Democratic primary against Bill Stachowski, Tim Kennedy, is not a Better Democrat .

BingChester :: Fight Back NY Campaign Against Stachowski a Big Mistake
Tim Kennedy supported a Steve Pigeon led coup in the Erie County Legislature that put Republicans back in charge.  Tim Kennedy spurned the entire progressive base throughout Erie County.  Tim Kennedy is even connected to a variety of anti-gay activists and isn't even a guaranteed vote in favor of marriage equality (see here ).

So why is Fight Back NY implicitly supporting Tim Kennedy?

My guess here is that people inside the organization want to make a big impact by getting a guaranteed victory.  I suppose they figure that they can flip more votes by scaring people into voting for marriage equality, for fear of the organization coming after them in 2012.  And Bill Stachowski is by far the most vulnerable incumbent Democrat facing a primary challenge.

But again, these reasons just aren't good enough.  Think about all of the other races Fight Back NY could have gotten involved with.  What about taking out Rev. Ruben Diaz, the leader of the anti-marriage equality foces?  What about Shirley Huntley, an unpopular and unknown incumbent who hasn't really been tested in Southeast Queens?  What about a candidate like Regina Calcaterra, who has a shot against an entrenched anti-marriage equality incumbent out in Suffolk County?

Instead, we're left with a great progressive organization supporting an untrustworthy Democrat running against a marginal incumbent where an extremely strong Republican challenger awaits the winner in November.  If that sounds like a recipe for disaster to you, you're not alone.

We used to have a great progressive challenger in this race, but when Sean Cooney ended his campaign last week, we were let with a stinker of a race (as Adama previously blogged ).  If Fight Back NY had gotten into this race to support Sean Cooney, I'd be cheering this decision.  But now, with the awful choice between Stachowski and Kennedy, it makes absolutely no sense for the organization to spend valuable resources on this stinker.

And as a final note, I personally feel a little betrayed.  I promoted the "Send 'Em Packing" link last week that Fight Back NY allegedly would use to make this decision.  Yet now I find it hard to believe that the page was anything more than an e-mail collect.  Nowhere in today's announcement does the organization mention anything about a vote or about their readers chosing Stachowski as the top opponent to oppose.  It's hard to believe as it is that the largely downstate constituency of Fight Back NY (young, progressive, LGBT) would pick Stachowski, or even know who Stachowski is.  If I had to, I would guess that Rev Diaz probably would win a straight up vote by Fight Back NY supporters because he's the most well-known of bunch.

I'm confident that Fight Back NY will do good work this cycle.  And I think over the long run they're an ally to us reform-progressive types.  But this decision does not sit well with me.

Any public record? (0.00 / 0)
Is there evidence that Tim Kennedy even supports marriage equality?

There's...the opposite of that...does that help? (0.00 / 0)
He's never answered a direct question in public about it, he's been repeatedly endorsed by the Conservative party, and he refused to pull his ad from Illuzzi as a huge number of local pols did when Illuzzi went off and spewed his venom on the subject.

That's his stated position, including in his questionnaire for the Stonewall Dems of WNY. (0.00 / 0)
Whether he honors it is another question entirely. I think he actually might, since there's not a lot of personal profit in him not doing so. But the fact remains that I wouldn't trust him on it.

Thank you (0.00 / 0)
I didn't realize that. Still a terrible mistake for anyone to support Kennedy if the ultimate goal is a functional government which can make open decisions in public (which would ultimately be a huge benefit to the LBGT community).

Is their info outdated? (0.00 / 0)
Does FightBackNY even know that Cooney dropped out?

Kennedy Gets the Independence Line (0.00 / 0)
This could be interesting as Kennedy now has the Conservative and Independence lines. A 3-way election may be happening unless Kennedy wins the Sept primary. Quinn would REALLY need to run a strong campaign to make up the  vote that the C/I lines usually receive in off-year elections.

-------------------------------------

The Erie County Independence Party will back Timothy M. Kennedy for the State Senate this fall, dealing another blow to the candidacy of incumbent Democrat William T. Stachowski of Lake View.

Chairwoman Sandra Geise Rosenswie said her party's leaders voted for Kennedy, now giving him two key minor party lines - Independence and Conservative. The minor party lines often prove crucial in determining close elections, as is expected in Stachowski's 58th District this year.

The Independence endorsement is also a blow to Assemblyman Jack F. Quinn III of Hamburg, the Republican candidate who also sought the party nod.

Stachowski has now lost the important minor parties that always supported him in the past. Rosenswie said her committee's support for Kennedy was "decisive," and that the "incumbent" label will prove a problem for Stachowski and others like him this year.

"They heard this going door to door," she said of Independence members carrying designating petitions. "The public is ripping mad at incumbents. And it's not just him."

The "I" line is no surprise (0.00 / 0)
Tom Golisano controls the Independence Party in the Buffalo area, and Steve Pigeon works with Golisano.  It's a no-brainer.

The Conservative Party line is interesting; it seems to me that if Stachowski wins the Dem nomination he should be able to win in November, since the Repubs are going to have to live on their one line alone.  Registered Dems make up over half the total voter rolls; knocking the Dem nominee off kind of requires a serious fusion ticket.

It also seems to me that Stachowski's nomination chances should be bolstered by this move.  After all, he can show his "true Democratic colors" (yeah, I know, but in politics perception trumps reality).

Just to clarify (0.00 / 0)
I know that Fightback and its local affiliates on LI are working bigtime for Regina Calcaterra and Dave Mejias challenges. I do not think it fair to give the impression that they are ignoring such races at the expense of challenging Stachowski.
