SD-33: Pedro Cancels Invitation-Only "Town Hall" Because his Constituents Hate him too Much

by: Roatti

Fri Jul 23, 2010 at 15:50:43 PM EDT

It is really starting to look like Pedro's days embarrassing our party and bringing Albany to new lows are numbered:
Said Angel Seymore, a tenant and constituent of Sen. Espada's from Kingsbridge Road:

"Is Pedro Espada afraid of his own constituents? First he tries to have an exclusive, invitation-only town hall 'forum' where only certain people are invited, then cancels the event when word gets out.

"When will Pedro Espada finally face the people he is supposed to represent and answer their questions? Why does he continue to take thousands of dollars in campaign contributions from landlords and lobbyists while ignoring the needs of tenants? Why does the senator keep the most important bills for tenants -- the repeal of vacancy decontrol and the protection of Mitchell-Lama and Section 8 apartments -- bottled up in his housing committee instead of passing them to the Senate floor?"

This also brings up an important point.  While Pedro has been an absolute disgrace for his actions that are illegal, like the corruption surrounding his state-funded campaign army otherwise known as Soundview, his legal doings, like his voting record in the legislature is also a disgraceful sell-out to the special interests that rule Albany.

Zero Accountability (4.00 / 2)
I actually tried to RSVP to this so-called Town Hall and was told I needed an actual invitation addressed to me personally. This despite being a constituent.  I live 5 minutes on foot from the church where the event was to be held.  I am not an outsider or a "phony with no ties to [the] community."

I went to the Church last night with my kids.  The tenant activists who came (many of whom were constituents as well) could not have been a more pleasant and civil group of people.  Espada's paranoid rant about spitting, cursing rabble-rousers could not have been further from the truth.  These were honest citizens seeking accountable leadership.

I found the cancellation particularly galling because it came on the heels of Espada's refusal to participate in a wonderful community survey sponsored by the excellent community blog, the Bronx News Network.  See link here:
http://www.bronxnewsnetwork.or...

Espada's response to this simple request for a modicum of accountability boiled down to:  take your survey and stick it.

It Just Baffles Me (0.00 / 0)
How can Pedro Esdpada or anybody surrounding him believe he's going to win re-election?

Nobody in New York State politics is more universally despised than Sen. Espada.  Everybody in New York State knows about him precisely because of this; I'd venture to guess that most New Yorkers don't even know who their own Senator is.  But Espada?

Pedro, thy name is infamy.

Why even waste the time and money running for re-election?  How far up your ass does your head have to be to actually commit to even running.

Do yourself and the State a favor: just give it up.  Gustavo Rivera looks better each day and you've been looking worse each day since you were sworn in with your fingers crossed behind your back.

How he can win (4.00 / 1)
Pedro has been handing out favors and money for a long time, and a lot of people are going to vote for him because they want to keep getting those favors and that money.  It's old-fashioned politics, the way the machines used to play the game.

You wrote, "Everybody in New York State knows about him..."  The problem is that most voters don't really know about him, and a lot of those uneducated voters are in the 33rd SD.

The question is whether Bill Samuels and the WFP can spread enough money around to defeat him.  Oh yes, and Rivera as well.

Indeed (0.00 / 0)
primaries are always low-turnout affairs, which give the machine a disproportionate amount of power in tipping the balance.  Pedro might lose but it's not gonna be easy.

Espada as Chair of Housing Committee (4.00 / 1)
We wanted pro-Tenant legislation passed this term, but I get why Majority Conference Leader Sampson let us down by allowing Espada to retain his chairmanship of the Housing Committee after what was pulled in May of '09: because of the Dems' all-important/consuming drive to maintain their majority in the Senate post-election 2010 so they'll be in charge of re-districting.

At that point, Dems are on notice: no excuses, we're expecting major pro-tenant legislation to get passed next year and rent regs extended. Period.
