State Senate Primaries Matter

by: jmcbride

Mon Jul 26, 2010 at 13:07:11 PM EDT

If you have some time, there is a segment from this year's Netroots conference, called Primaries Matter worth watching.  I have advocated, over the objections of several others here, that primaries matter.  Right now the state senate primaries matter most. (See video on the flip)

As Markos points out in the video, the only way we are going to get better government, which reflects progressive values, at any level of government, is to have MORE and BETTER Democrats.  This has been the goal in this year's NYS Senate campaign since we first opened the discussion at last year's Netroots meeting.
We will get more Democrats this November, but for the next seven weeks (September 14), grassroots and progressive activists should focus their energies on the primary races.  These primaries will not get us more Democrats in the state senate, but we can get some better ones.  Referencing BingChester's Ranker #2, the three in the top eleven are Gustavo Rivera, Charlie Ramos and Lynn Nunes.  Yes, there are a few other primaries, but these are the three which will make the difference.

jmcbride :: State Senate Primaries Matter
In my comments to BingChester's Ranker #2, I suggested that we should ask for a Don't Vote for Pedro pledge from Democratic senate candidates.  I have concluded that would be just another in a long line of meaningless pledges.  I doubt very much whether any Democratic State Senator will ever vote for Pedro for a leadership post again, hopefully they won't have the opportunity.  The pledge I really would love to see is, "I won't vote for John Sampson."  But Democratic candidates can't afford to make that pledge, so I won't ask anyone for it.

John Sampson does not deserve to lead the State Senate in 2011.  If nothing else, the first condition of support for the candidates on Bingchester's list from the DSCC, is a commitment to support Sampson for leadership.  That's really no shocker or anything, that's the way party politics works.  But we're talking about the worst legislative body in the entire country.  There need to some major changes.  Senate leadership, if they want to become more effective and gain public support, need to develop transparency and allow members to truly represent their districts.  Rule by a small cabal in the backrooms has to stop. Allowing the democratic process to work, by limiting the influence if that cabal, would be helpful and wise.

And I haven't even mentioned effectiveness or ethics.

So for now, let's put energy into winning these primaries. Donate, makes calls, get out and canvass, call your friends and neighbors, vote.  Win or lose, a good showing will make the Democratic leadership be better in the next term.

Those candidates challenging dead wood Republicans or going after vacant seats in November, will appreciate victories in these primaries.  Success, however it is measured, in the primaries will give the November winners a greater chance to be independent, to effectively represent their district and to bring real reform to New York.

Primaries matter (4.00 / 2)
It is a truism that...

If we keep doing what we've always done then we'll keep getting what we've always got.

In the case of the New York State Senate that is just not acceptable any longer.

I  am encouraged to see the DSCC actively supporting more candidates this year. That alone is good. But we still need a house cleaning and we still need to put an emphasis into the best possible candidates. Ones that will be willing to fight the inertia that is New York State government.

Pedro Espada and Joe Bruno are simply the poster children for all that is wrong with Albany.

Politics as Usual (2.00 / 2)
It seems like politics as usual to me. Many of these so called reform organizations including Reboot, pick a candidate they like and ignore the rest of the challengers.

For example, Desiree Hunter was heavily promoted while the two other challengers in the race were ignored. It was not until Desiree Hunter dropped out that everyone jumped on the Gustavo Rivera bandwagon. He announced a long time before and there is also another candidate in the race, Tirado. So called reform organizations including Reboot solely promoted Hunter in emails and posts.

There are also challengers to David Mejas and Regina Calcaterra to name two off the top of my head that have not received any coverage on this site or from so called reform organizations.

This site and reform organizations should be fair and give every candidate coverage and an opportunity to have their voice heard. It seems like many focus solely on candidates with the most money or those that a small group deems fit. This is not reform.

Completely disagree (4.00 / 1)
What platform should we give to Greg Fischer, a guy who is completely unstable, untrustworthy, and doesn't even stand for a progressive agenda?

Why should we promote Tim Kennedy, a guy allied with Steve Pigeon and who recently flipped the Erie County Legislature to the Republicans in a move reminiscent of Espada himself?

Giving equal coverage to all challengers is equivalent to the idea that all challengers are reformers.  And that's simply not true.  And it's been to the detriment of reformers in this state that we've sometimes failed to hone in on the right challenger.  We're trying to not make that mistake this time.

Your timing is wrong (0.00 / 0)
Desiree Hunter announced her candidacy long before Gustavo Rivera did.

The Senate Leadership Has To Go (0.00 / 0)
Even if they signed a "Don't Vote for Pedro" pledge, it would just be another empty can of air freshener.

The Senate Leadership is the reason the Senate is incapable of leadership.  As for the DSCC, their cute when it comes to promoting more Democrats; but when it comes to promoting better Democrats, things get ugly and the purpose of progress is defeated.

You can't get better Democrats without first replacing some old ones.  And you can't fix a system by always keeping the same cogs in the machine.  They all need to go.

Some might say that's just self-righteous, blind anti-incumbency.  I say it's blind incumbent-loyalty and self-preservation that's got us into this mess.  And they keep the back-and-forth going, which keeps our government in a stalemate.

These guys can't stay in there forever, after all.  This year, it's better they leave sooner rather than later.

September is more important than November if our goal is more and better.
