It's time for the third edition in our weekly roundup of news from the Democratic campaigns for the New York State Senate.  This week we've got a bevy of endorsements from the Women's Campaign Forum, HRC and more.

As always, if you see that we missed something, please include links to more news on New York State Senate campaigns in the comments.  If you Tweet about any campaigns, please consider using the #NYSen10 hashtag.  You can find all our challengers on Act Blue at the Change Albany Now page.  If you'd like to follow these roundups on a daily basis, visit our blog or subscribe to our RSS feed.  --Mike

NewYorkSenateDems :: NY State Senate: Weekly Campaign Roundup #3
DEMOCRATIC CANDIDATES

New York state is a finalist for up to $700 million in federal education funds as part of the Race To The Top competition. This is a direct result of the Senate Democratic majority pushing through major legislation in recent months that allow test scores to be used in teacher evaluations and that raise the number of charter schools in the state to 460 from 200.

The Women's Campaign Forum has endorsed four Democratic candidates: Didi Barrett, Regina Calcaterra, Mary Wilmot, and Robin Wilt. The WCF is dedicated to advancing the political participation and leadership of women who support reproductive health choices for all. WCF, founded in 1974, is a non-partisan national network dedicated to achieving parity for women in public office.

The Human Rights Campaign New York endorsed numerous Democratic challengers and incumbents who are all supporters of marriage equality and whose election will "put New York on a path to fairness and equality for same-sex couples in the state." They endorsed incumbent Senators Brian Foley, Craig Johnson, Tom Duane, and Dave Valesky -- and Democratic candidates Dave Mejias, Tony Avella, and Regina Calcaterra. Not a single Republican was endorsed by the group.

Tony Avella, running against 38-year Republican incumbent Frank Padavan, was endorsed by a massive retail union . The Retail, Wholesale and Department Store Union, which represents 100,000 workers across the United States and Canada, gave Avella the nod, calling him "an independent voice for working New Yorkers and taxpayers." "He's exactly the kind of reformer we desperately need in Albany right now," said Stuart Applebaum, the union's president.

Democratic Candidate Mike Kaplowitz proposed massive pension reform, advocating for the elimination of overtime for calculating a public employee's pension and called for creating a pension plan for new public employees that would be similar to a 401K plan. Both measures, he said, could save taxpayers an estimated $2.2 billion over the next three years. "The costs of public pensions are killing New York State taxpayers," he said. By 2013, Kaplowitz said, public employee pensions will cost taxpayers $6.8 billion -- up from $2.4 billion in 2009.

Kaplowitz was also profiled by Jimmy Vielkind on The Albany-Times Union's Capitol Confidential blog. In the piece, Kaplowitz spoke about how the GOP primary schism in the district is sure to play to his advantage. "There's no question that the schism between the two of them will benefit me, because there are a lot of rank and file Republicans very angry with and very unhappy with the shenanigans of Assemblyman Greg Ball," Kaplowitz said. Those shenanigans include an allegation that Ball denies that he groped a woman at an Albany bar, sleeps with a gun under his bed and once found a dead goat on his driveway.

Democratic Candidate Didi Barrett, running against Republican incumbent Stephen Saland, weighed in on a variety of issues in a wide-ranging interview with The Register-Star. She said "It's not about upstate or downstate, it's about New York state. Politics has gotten in the way of progress for New York. We need an era that doesn't complain and blame, but gets things done." On balancing the budget, Barrett said that's "something someone like me brings to the mix. I'm not a politician; I spent a long time in the not-for-profit sector. I learned to stretch a dollar by thinking outside the box. Everything should be on the table as a way to explore the best solutions."

Democratic Candidate Joanne Yepsen  has continued to fight for the future of Saratoga Race Course. Yepsen and Sen. Eric Adams, head of the state Senate's racing committee, held a roundtable at Saratoga National Golf Club to discuss the racing industry's impact on the local economy. Yepsen said all stakeholders - New York Racing Association, New York City Off Track Betting and the Aqueduct racino operator - should be brought together to deal with racing's future collectively. Several years ago, NYRA had a management contract with MGM to run Aqueduct's racino, but the state wouldn't approve it for unexplained reasons. "We've got different people running the state now," Yepsen said.

Sen. Darrel Aubertine said that he is honored to have the endorsement of independent voters throughout his district. "I'm so pleased and honored to have the endorsement of the local independent voters and the Independence Party ballot line this fall," Sen. Aubertine said. "Working for all of us means working together. I want to thank all nine members of the local Independence Party Committee and all of the local voters who signed petitions for your support and endorsement." Over the past year, more than 50 pieces of legislation sponsored or co-sponsored by Sen. Aubertine passed the Senate.

REPUBLICANS

Showing just how out of touch he really is, Republican incumbent Stephen Saland attended a $19,000 black-tie dinner  for his re-election campaign that was thrown by a politically connected couple in April at their Rhinebeck, Dutchess County, estate.  The $19,000 dinner was listed as an in-kind donation to Saland's campaign. That means it was for services rendered for a political function, but not a direct monetary contribution. "There's a lot of trust with the reporting by the campaigns," said Dick Dadey, executive director of Citizens Union, a good-government group. "There's very little if any verification."

Two more from HRC (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for posting this!  HRC Regional Field Director, Sultan Shakir here.  Just wanted to add that our NY PAC also endorsed Tim Kennedy in Buffalo who's an unwavering supporter of marriage equality.  I'm actually in his office now working to plug our members into next Monday's canvass and phonebank kick-off so we can kick out Stachowski!  We also endorsed Charlie Ramos who's running against Diaz. Need I say more?

Stay tuned to hrc.org/NYMarriage for more.

Why not Lynn Nunes? (0.00 / 0)
In addition to being a serious candidate who completely supports marriage and other equality measures and is running against an anti-equality incumbent, Nunes came in with a record of doing very well against an incumbent and has outraised his opponent.

So why isn't he on the list?

Be careful. (0.00 / 0)
I'm not going to tell you not to go against Stachowski, but there is every reason to believe that Kennedy is a snake, and probably the next Espada. Be careful around him.

Also, if you get the chance, please drop me a line at the email address in my profile.

Your NY State Senate: Weekly Campaign Roundup #3 Is Incomplete (0.00 / 0)
After reading your post that dealt with the races for NY State Senate, I was disappointed with the thoroughness of your reporting especially as it concerns the exceedingly competitive Democratic Primary race in SD6.

Your post seemed to either miss or ignore the fact that at present there is no actual democratic candidate for that office, pending the results of the primary election which is to be held on September 14th, 2010.

Francesca Carlow, a business woman from Plainview, having submitted more than three times the necessary number of signatures required, will be on the ballot. Francesca is not a career politician but we have all seen where the career politicians have gotten us and we all have had enough.

It is time for an independent, fresh voice for the people of the 6th Senatorial District, Long Island and New York State. It is time for a person of the people who has real issues to fight for rather than running because the boys in the back room thought it was his turn, again. It is time for a local business person, a strong community leader and organizer, a person who is not a professional politician to be given the chance to represent us. It is time for someone who has worked to improve our children's educational experiences, a person who is at the forefront of fighting for local business in our district and on Long Island a person who actually cares deeply about the issues that affect us here on the ground.

After spending the last 30 years as a community activist and leader, Francesca decided to run because she is sure there is a better way to represent the people of the 6th Senate district in Albany that does not include the career politicians.

The response in the District, from Plainview to Levittown to Hempstead to Garden City, to the news that Francesca has decided to run has been overwhelming and she has built an unprecedented grassroots organization capable of overcoming those who would like nothing more than to continue the same old politics. Francesca, an independent democrat, who is being called the people's candidate, would like to restore effective leadership to the Sixth District by taking our government back from the career politicians.

As a responsible journalist it behooves you to report the facts to your readers and in this case the fact is that the democratic nomination will be decided by the people on September 14th and not by the boys in the back room.

I look forward to your more complete reporting of the facts in your ongoing coverage of the very important race for NY SD6.

PLEASE NOTE:

The following is an excerpt of a news story which appeared in the July 23th issue of the Plainview Old Bethpage Herald that provides a more comprehensive view of Francesca and the upcoming primary race.

Trio Hardware Co-Owner Francesca Carlow Submits Petition to Run for NYS Senate
Written by Karen Gellender Friday, 23 July 2010 00:00

While "community activist" is a title that anyone running for political office would like to put on their résumé, few people demonstrate the "active" in the title the way Francesca Carlow does. The co-owner of Trio Hardware in the Morton Village shopping center for 25 years, a store known for its philanthropic presence in the community, is a member of the Long Island Regional Planning Council, the Empire Zone Administrative Board, the Long Island Junior Chambers of Commerce, Safenet, POB Athletic Booster Club, Title IX, Student Advisory, POB Bond Issue Task Force, Friends of the POB Library, and PTA Council, has also served as the former president of the Plainview Chamber of Commerce, and currently serves as second vice president of the Nassau Council of Chambers of Commerce. She is also the recipient of the Lifetime PTA Founders Day Award.

So when Carlow says that she submitted her petition to run as the Democratic candidate for the 6th Senatorial District in order to help the people in her community, and not for her own political ambitions, even the most cynical would have to admit her history of putting her time and money where her mouth is makes it difficult to doubt her sincerity.

"I've seen a much larger percentage of our clientele, who I've known for years and years, who have lost their jobs due to the situation in Manhattan, the financial crisis, the downsizing of companies," said Carlow, explaining the changes she's witnessed personally from her Plainview store. "The economy has severely affected doing business on Long Island."

Carlow was born and raised in South Hadley, Massachusetts, and came to Long Island at the age of 12, living in Roslyn. After graduating from Emerson College with a degree in communications, she worked producing multimedia sales presentations in Manhattan, both with Roger Wade Productions and later her own company, AV Source, before marrying her husband Bruce and moving to Plainview. Her two children, Danielle and Ben, graduated from POBJFK High School. Carlow has now been an active member of the Plainview-Old Bethpage community for 28 years.

While not initially interested in running for office, her belief that Long Islanders were being taxed unfairly, as well as dissatisfaction with the situation in Albany in general, convinced her this spring to start mounting a campaign for state senate.

"I don't feel like we are represented up in Albany fairly. I feel that we do not have a voice- a clear, loud voice- that's being represented up there. A career politician has been in office for 21 years; I feel it's time we had a new voice- a business voice, not career politicians who are representing themselves more than the people of the district," Carlow said.

She is critical of her Democratic opponent in the upcoming primary, Dave Mejias, whom she sees as another career politician. "Hearing that the hand-picked candidate for the democratic party would be leading us down the same path that we've been on for the last 21 years, I really felt I couldn't sit back and see a career politician represent the people of this district, and have their concerns take a second seat to his own agenda," she commented. Despite the fact that Mejias has served in the county legislature, while this is Carlow's first campaign, she said that her business experience, and long history of involvement in the community, renders her the more qualified candidate.

Speaking of her opponents, while Carlow applauds the recent steps that Senator Hannon has taken against cyberbullying (which she feels is a tremendous problem), she is dissatisfied with his record in general, stating that after 34 years up in Albany and 21 years in the 6th district in particular, he has grown complacent in his position and now votes along the party line. "I don't feel that he really speaks for the people of his district," she said.

Carlow noted two things in particular she has already done to bring economic stimulus to the community before seeking office; starting a Keep it Here: Buy Locally campaign, and working during the 2009 US Open at Bethpage State Park to promote local restaurants and attractions to all the new people in town for the USGA event.

In addition to working to keep Long Island money on Long Island, Carlow said that other items on her legislative agenda would include making better use of local universities, working with North-Shore LIJ hospital (the largest employer in the area), and creating affordable housing to keep young people on Long Island.

"No one wants to live in the basement of their parents' house forever," she commented, referring to the difficulties faced by young people who would like to stay on Long Island. She referred to the statistics measuring the number of families, and young people in general, moving away from Long Island due to the high cost of living as "staggering."

Despite the large variety of ways in which she has served the community for almost 30 years, Carlow takes special pride in her recent training with CERT (Community Emergency Response Training), which she completed in March, citing her belief that community officials should be a source of leadership and support in a crisis in every possible way. She also mentioned that the only current elected official in Nassau County who is also a CERT member is Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano.

"We did not have a vision for so many years; now it's a very coined phrase, 'visioning, a vision for Long Island.' But we do need a vision, and we need new voices to speak for the people," said Carlow. "I'm a family person, and I care deeply about the people in the sixth district; I work with them every single day."

The primary is scheduled for September.

Please be advised (4.00 / 4)
I am going to start troll rating your comments(which would lead to them being hidden over time) if you continue to copy/paste press releases as comments to articles.  You are not following any sort of community standards here.  This is your warning.

[ Parent ]
Is there anything more than a press release? (4.00 / 4)
The only thing I can find that doesn't read like this same old press release is:

http://blog.vote4francesca.com/

Unfortunately, it seems to be almost completely issues-free.  It's kind of resume and who she knows.  That's not bad, but without the issues it's not very helpful.

I'm with BingChester - post something more, or you're just trolling.

[ Parent ]
Okay, let me give you some free advice here. (4.00 / 2)
Semi-randomly posting the same material and claims, as well as demanding that people follow some arbitrary standard for fairness, is just going to piss off the people who write for this website. Pissed off writers don't write nice material about your candidate.

How about this for an idea: talk to people. Convince them that you have good points and ideas. This is completely aside from the fact that people can't be expected to write about something that they don't even know exists: I, for one, have an email address sitting in my public profile, and I've never heard word one from your campaign.

But moreover, if you want free media on New York's biggest political blog, it would behoove you to try actually networking a little, winning friends and influencing people. Don't talk to me about journalism, because this is equally true with newspapers back in the real world. It's a reality of life.

What they said (4.00 / 2)
Look, I most of the stuff I do here reports on primary challengers to a Democratic incumbent.  And even on stuff to primary challengers to other Democratic primary challengers.  But I don't just troll around unrelated diaries attempted to up my Google search hits;  I do my own diaries; the other people who commented do their own work here; I wouldn't take their advice lightly.

That goes for all you campaign staffers out there.  Stuff like this is happening way too often around here.  And it is unhealthy.  Some people think that anonymity is just lollipops and snickers bars for the blogs...but stuff like this what anonymity gets you.  It's pretty clear to me that plenty of official operatives are usurping these threads because they figure they can influence the outcome of an election with a blog comment.

[ Parent ]
What they said (0.00 / 1)
Actually your "interview" with Mr Mejias seemed to me nothing more than one big press release consisting of softball questions and tired, prepared answers.

Not knowing that Ms. Carlow is in the race indicates that perhaps your research regarding the complete field of candidates in this race was not as comprehensive as it might have been. Perhaps you should contact Ms. Carlow in order to provide your readers with a more complete picture of the race for the democratic nomination in SD6.

Why leave your readers with the mistaken perception that there is already a Democratic nominee in SD6 when clearly it will be up to the voters to decide?

Enlighten me please because I just don't understand your recalcitrance.

[ Parent ]
No, you jus don't understand (4.00 / 2)
First point: that wasn't my interview.

Look up the other interviews I did by clicking on my name and reading through some of my older stuff.  They're anything but softball.

I and the others above said it clear: your comment was too damn long.  It hijacked the thread.  It's worthy of diary, maybe, but not here.

And that's your problem: you didn't bother to find out anything about the netroots community before you came here and told us we're all stupid.  And I'm fucking recalcitrant?

Good luck on the campaign trail.  If this is how you interact with people, then you'll need it.

[ Parent ]
No, you jus don't understand (0.00 / 0)
Perhaps not. In the same way that you did not know Francesca Carlow existed I did not know you existed.

From your writing (and later by your own admission in response to my comment) it did not seem that you were aware that other candidates existed, my intention was to make you and your readers aware of that fact. If, in doing so, I violated some unwritten rule of your blog I apologize.

That being said, I am not sure why you felt the need to use abusive language.

Your good wishes for Ms. Carlow on the campaign trail are much appreciated. I am sure that at some point she would love to meet you and say hello.

[ Parent ]
Come here and be obnoxious, and yes, you're going to make people angry at you. (4.00 / 1)
You've been running around here for days accusing people of bias, bad journalism, softball questions, and "ignoring" a candidate who has gotten no press and made no effort to reach out.

When you come in here with the attitude that you're being wronged and are entitled to good press by the people who contribute their time here, and acting like you deserve equal respect with established campaigns.

[ Parent ]
established campaigns? (0.00 / 0)
I would call 3500+ signatures an established campaign. I bet Ms. Carlow's opponents see it as such. I know the people of the district do.

With her strong base of support in the district, developed over 25 years, there is a very real possibility that Ms. Carlow is going to win this primary election and that makes the boys in the back room very uncomfortable.

I am not sure why you are all so upset, what I said was true. You did not know about Ms. Carlow's candidacy and now you and your readers do.

You can continue to attack me for my lack of blog etiquette (for which I already appologized) although I hardly think it a productive exercise.

I invite you to find out more about Ms. Carlow and her positions on the issues, your readers will be the winners.

[ Parent ]
How about a nice financial disclosure report? (4.00 / 1)
Something to show you're raising money? Or some media? Or any indication that you have the first clue about how to handle public relations? Because the more I hear out of you, the less I think you know what you're doing. How about not demanding that the people who, to repeat myself, freely donate their time for no compensation. If you want better coverage, try reaching out and talking to some of the contributors, and providing information in a less aggressive and accusatory manner.
