Shut up, Bloomberg.

Mayor Bloomberg is all for cultural sensitivity and tolerance... except when he's not.  Hizzoner speaks on New York/Haudenosaunee relations:

"I've said this to David Paterson, I said, 'You know, get yourself a cowboy hat and a shotgun,'" Bloomberg was quoted as saying in the NY Daily News.

"If there's ever a great video, it's you standing in the middle of the New York State Thruway saying, you know, 'Read my lips - the law of the land is this, and we're going to enforce the law,'" added Mayor Bloomberg.

Indian Country Today asks, Where is America's outrage?

if anyone in America should understand Native Americans, it should be Bloomberg. He is a part of an oppressed people: Persecuted, dispossessed and eradicated. Being Jewish, Bloomberg should feel the same way Native Americans do.

After all, to the Seneca and the Iroquois Confederacy or Haudenosaunee, northern New York state is our Israel. We are the freedom fighters and defenders of the land, not the cowboys. The cowboys are the invaders and looters.

We have lived in the area from time immemorial; we have a constitution predating European contact and a federation of nations that American founding fathers studied to replace a system based on a monarchy. We are an ancient people with our own language, customs, spirituality and government, living on our own homeland; our Israel...

Bloomberg's blindness to our history must not be limited to only him. The rest of America seems not to care very much.

America seemed at least mildly interested in discussing Native American sovereignty not too long ago, when the Iroquois Nationals were recently denied the right to travel on their own Haudenosaunee passports to Britain.  As one would suspect, that interest in acknowledging currently extant current treaties and sovereignty issues only extends so far.

Megalomaniacal Mike... (4.00 / 2)
...is at it again...he is truly one of the most arrogant people in the world, sneering down his nose at an entire group of people who have been dealt injustice after injustice...he is disgusting.

I'm outraged... (4.00 / 2)
...but, then, I was outraged when NYC voted a jerk like him mayor, too.  What is wrong with these people, that they put up with this guy?

My heart goes out to Indian Country-- such crass slurs should never have to be endured.

Look who he was up against (4.00 / 1)
Mark Green pissed off the entire Latino community in order to get nominated in 2001, 2005 nominee Freddy Ferrer (who was second in Democratic balloting in 2001) is a couple of candles short of a menora, and last year's loser Bill Thompson is a nice guy but ran a terrible campaign.

Going back, Ruth Messenger was the 1997 nominee, and she has rightfully disappeared from view ever since.  In 1993, incumbent David Dinkins -- another great guy but lousy leader -- was knocked out of office.

If Democrats want to win, we have to run, and nominate, capable candidates.  Little as I care about Ed Koch's views and activities over the past 25 years, he was a GREAT candidate.

pretty much accurate... (4.00 / 1)
except for Bill Thompson...he was out spent by nearly 300-to-1 and was not given much of a chance by pollsters and yet, despite that financial disadvantage and all of the other things Megalomaniacal Mike was only able to purchase the seat again by just four percentage points.

Fix your numbers (0.00 / 0)
Thompson was outspent 12-1, not 300-1; he spent about the same amount as Freddy Ferrer spent in 2005.

ok... (0.00 / 0)
will give you the benefit of the doubt...but a recent news report said it was 300-to-1...perhaps they were wrong.  The point is still valid, however...despite being outspent by an outrageous amount...Thompson still managed a very credible showing on election day.
