Bill says it best (via email):

Bronx, NY - Today Bronx voters sent a clear message to Albany lawmakers with the defeat of disgraced incumbent State Senator Pedro Espada. Voters are fed up with the corrupt practices of Albany and want lawmakers to fundamentally change the way they conduct business on behalf of the people. That is why they elected New Roosevelt Initiative-endorsed candidate Gustavo Rivera. New Yorkers want to see real reform enacted immediately and are willing to send young, bright progressive-minded candidates to Albany who will get the job done.

Many said defeating Pedro Esapda, the incumbent State Senator, would be an uphill battle. New Roosevelt was the first organization to endorse Rivera, in a crowded primary field, more than two months ago and saw him as the best shot to beat Espada and bring reform to Albany. New Roosevelt built from scratch a field organization totally devoted to Albany reform and executed a targeted field and mail operation directed at Bronx primary voters as well as polling and get out the vote efforts. We are proud to help make the defeat of Espada a reality.

With this victory we are sending a message to both Republicans and Democrats that if major reform measures are not in enacted soon, they may face the same fate as Espada in 2012.

Rivera's victory comes at the end of a day apparently filled with campaign shenanigans by the disgraced loser - sounds sweet, doesn't it? - and can safely be considered a necessary step to draining the Albany swamp.

[Update 1]: via MYD, it wasn't even close: 70% for Rivera. Shoulda handed out more groceries and sausages, Pedro.

[Update 2]: Let me emphasize again the most important part of the statement above:

With this victory we are sending a message to both Republicans and Democrats that if major reform measures are not in enacted soon, they may face the same fate as Espada in 2012.

The clock's ticking for the Albany incumbency. Might be time to think about those Five Pillars of Reform, eh?

FANTASTIC. (4.00 / 5)
Congratulations to EVERYONE who worked so hard for this. Great job. Great day for New York State.

We beat one of the big bad wolves, with everything on his side.

And we pissed off Steve Pigeon.

Great day.

wooHOOOO! (4.00 / 2)
Such great news.

Excellent news (4.00 / 3)
There is hope yet.

Diaz...? (4.00 / 1)
Diaz looks like he's jumping ahead early

District 32, towards the bottom of the page

commentary?

I heard it relayed through Twitter that HRC is taking this as a loss. (4.00 / 1)
Don't know anything beyond that.

Thanks for the link (4.00 / 1)
Monserrate lost again too I see. Very nice.

Hopefully Dems win enough Senate seats to leave Diaz all alone in the back row behind not only the Democrats but the Republicans too.

Oh, happy day... (4.00 / 1)
...when we wash that away!  Nice work, ya'all.

Great news (4.00 / 2)
because our chances of holding the Senate just got a lot better without the Espada millstone.

AG Cuomo's Civil Suit filed this summer (0.00 / 0)
was so horrible describing the abuses of Espada and the Soundview Health Clinic, I was and am still expecting a federal RICO indictment to be announced.

This guy is the biggest thief and a typical Bronx pol that does not even live in his district, which needs all the help it can get.

I hope Pedro sees the inside of a prison soon.

GOOD RIDDANCE!

BUH-BYE!!!!! (4.00 / 1)
Don't let the door hit u on the way out!!!

And (0.00 / 0)
that's one less bargaining chip he has with prosecutors now

I'm as happy as anyone here...BUT (0.00 / 0)
Espada says that he's "not quitting".  Does that presage a write-in campaign?  It ain't over yet.  Don't put anything past that guy.

he's gonna run in 2 years (0.00 / 0)

So, I saw this mentioned before, but I thought it might worth a try to ask if anyone from upstate had any news on some of the state senate primaries up there?  I'm specifically curious about the GOP SD-40, Dem SD-46, and GOP SD-49 races.

In SD-46... (0.00 / 0)
...incumbent Senator Neil Breslin has won with a projected 57% of the vote to Luke Martland's 42%.

This result comes against a previously unknown political newcomer after 14 years in the Senate, two other brothers elected at the county level, and over $200,000 spend on television advertisements.

Which could clue you in as to Breslin's possible 2012 results, but as for now, it's looking like he gets two more years.

In the GOP Primaries in SD-40 and SD-49, a fucking idiot won, and a goddamn fool lost, just like in every other Republican primary held across the country :-)
