SD-40: The Paladino-Ball Ticket

by: DeWitt

Wed Sep 15, 2010 at 10:18:39 AM EDT

Primary night must have been a full moon because the New York State Republican Party has succeeded in nominating some truly hair-raising candidates to run our state.  While the New York Democrats cleaned house on primary night, removing coup plotter Pedro Espada and re-defeating domestic abuser Hiram Monserrate,  it's clear from Tuesday's results that Tea Party extremism has hijacked the once moderate New York GOP.

On the surface, do-nothing assembly member Greg Ball and millionaire developer Carl Paladino.  Nothing signifies this transformation more than the nomination of wingnut fellow travelers Carl Paladino for Governor and Greg Ball for State Senate.

Carl Paladino and Greg Ball are both engaged in an active war on the poor meant to dehumanize New Yorkers in need.  In the midst of a two year long recession, Paladino blames poverty on the shiftless character of the poor and called for the return of poorhouses. Ball, for his part, has denounced affordable housing as homes for "the Nation's poorest and weakest."

The Paladino-Ball ticket is fully committed to repealing gun control laws that have received bipartisan support in New York.  Unsurprisingly, the both Ball and Paladino have been rewarded for their fealty with the strong support of the gun lobby.

Finally, for reasons that are not exactly clear, respect for women is not part of either conservatives' definition of "traditional values". Paladino was famously caught sending incredibly crude and sexist e-mails, while Greg Ball appears to have an abhorrent lack of self control, to say the least, and strongly and asininely opposes legislation to protect women from discrimination in the work place.

Clearly, the Paladino-Ball team would spell disaster for the Empire State if elected.  While progressives might be enthused by the Republicans' nomination of candidates so far out side the main stream, in the long run it is an unhealthy state of affairs to have one of the two major political parties function as some kind of electoral mad house.  New York's voters must ensure that these men receive the defeat they so richly deserve in November to send a message to the New York Republicans that the shallow and dangerous demagoguery of Paladino and Ball has no place in our state.

Return of Poorhouses (0.00 / 0)
It's not so much a Paladino-Ball ticket as it is Scrooge-Marley.

But dont bah-humbug them, yet.  2010 has been a big year for ignorance and want...

Ball has a solid shot of winning since (0.00 / 0)
his assembly district is 100% within the boundaries of the  senate district. Say what you want, but Ball mopped the floor with Mary Beth Murphy on the Republican ballot and with the write-in campaign on the Conservative line.

There could be an upset in the open Republican 53rd and 59th SD with the minor party lines (C & I) assigned to the losers in yesterday's primary. I do not believe that the losers are attorney's that can be nominated for a judgeship.

Don't know about the 53rd, but in the 59th, Domagalski is a lawyer. (0.00 / 0)
So he can get off that ballot line if he so chooses.

Well (0.00 / 0)
Its not entirely his choice.  I think he has to be appointed to be a judge.  The judicial positions available for appointment would have to be made by the governor.  Do they may have to be approved by the Senate?  Not all that easy.

[ Parent ]
This is how it works (0.00 / 0)
I am not talking about an APPOINTMENT to a vacant judgeship, the strategy is for the party to NOMINATE the person as a CANDIDATE to a judgeship up for election (Supreme Court) since NYS election law exempts judicial candidates from the deadlines applied to the other elected positions.

A judicial district convention shall be held not earlier than the Tuesday following the third Monday in September preceding the general election and not later than the fourth Monday in September preceding such election.

The nomination for the elected judgeship has to be made quickly to be valid.

A person who has been nominated for public office by a party or parties and who is thereafter nominated for another office by one or more of such parties, or who is thereafter nominated by the party to fill a vacancy caused by such nomination or nominations to fill a vacancy by the party, may decline such first nomination or nominations not later than the third day after the filing of the certificate of his nomination or nominations for such other office, but such a declination shall not be effective if such other nomination or nominations by the party is duly declined.

Domalgowski is a party boss (0.00 / 0)
He can do whatever he wants.

Spot on. Like him or not, Ball has political chops. (0.00 / 0)

I was thinking the same thing, that Paladino and Ball are a match made in hell!  They're perfect for each other.  I wonder when we'll get the dual-endorsement/requisite lovefest?

if the takeover of the GOP by crackpots (0.00 / 0)
here and nationally ends up in the eventual destruction of the Republican Party...then that would be a good thing, in my opinion. If it ends up actually putting those crackpots into elective office...then you're right...that would not be good for this state or this country.

We have to make sure it ends with the destruction of the Republican (0.00 / 0)
Party, for exactly those reasons.  Once it's destroyed we can have two decent parties again (the Democratic Party will promptly split, be sure of it).

It has to be destroyed as fast as possible.  Look, if you know anyone who's still registered Republican, get them to quit.  Indepdendent will do just fine, but it's immoral to sign onto the Republican leadership's demented agenda.

Think it may be the exact opposite . . . . (0.00 / 0)

I actually think NYS needs better gun control laws... (0.00 / 0)
The current ones are an anarchic mess of unrelated and inconsistent provisions scattered all over the State Code, and add up to utter confusion.  Many of the restrictions relating to getting approval from a local judge seem to be paperwork for its own sake -- and yet there's no actual requirement that anyone need to have ANY sort of training in order to get a gun license.

Of course, neither Paladino nor Ball wants to "rationalize" gun laws, they're just out to WEAKEN them to score cheap political points.

Did you notice Ball (again) won big? Like him or don't, he is one hell of a (0.00 / 0)
politician.
