New Q Poll: Paladino Trails Cuomo By Only 6

by: phillip anderson

Yeah, there should be caveats aplenty with reading this poll and one would think that being caught red handed sending racist emails as well as ones depicting, ahem, bestiality, would severely effect the popularity of a major party candidate for governor of the state of New York. Looks like, at least as far as this Quinnipiac poll, you'd be wrong.

Among likely voters, the Democrat Cuomo has a paltry 49% to 43% lead over Paladino, the blowhard Buffalo businessman who won a shocking and decisive victory last week in the GOP primary, the Quinnipiac University poll finds.

Quinnipiac's findings are in stark contrast to a Rasmussen Reports poll released Monday that showed Cuomo with a more robust 54% to 38% lead.

Cuomo "might be a victim of his own excess," Quinnipiac pollster Maurice Carroll said. "Politicians and polls have depicted him so relentlessly as a sure thing that he might be a victim of the 'throw the bums out' attitude that hits incumbents in this angry year."

Lots to digest and lots to take with a mighty hefty grain of salt in this poll, but maybe it's time to also start hitting Carl on his crazy policy ideas as well. Yeah, he's a racist, a kook, a sexist and probably an anti-Semite - and plenty of people still don't know that. They should definitely be educated to that fact. But, it's also plainly obvious that it's time to start making the case against Carl on substance as well, no matter how you read this poll.

Thanks for the calm assessment (4.00 / 3)
Too many people I've talked with seem convinced that Paladino is so far out of step with New York that it'll be a walk for Cuomo.  I've felt edgy about that - not because of Paladino's positions, but because of voter cynicism about NYS goverment and Cuomo's last name.

(Plus, I haven't found a lot of Dems really ENTHUSIASTIC about Cuomo.)

Hopefully the shock of this will get the conversation going, with even some substance amid what I expect to be a bloodbath of a campaign.

A lot of people haven't been paying attention (4.00 / 1)
I know that when I told a friend of mine (who is a Republican) that "The Republicans have lost their minds," they thought I was talking about Delaware.  It wasn't until I explained I was talking about Paladino that they were stunned - "why didn't anyone say something about this before?" was their response.

Even though we here in the blogosphere, and the political junkies who read the political section of the newspapers knew about it, the general population doesn't.  It'll be interesting to see what happens now that the campaigns are in full swing.

Bingo. (4.00 / 2)
Two words: Senator Coakley.

[ Parent ]
Where is Lazio? (4.00 / 2)
I'm sorry, but any poll that doesn't include Lazio as an option is garbage. Have these folks forgotten that the Conservative Party line actually gets votes? Have they forgotten about Doug Hoffman?

Now, of course Lazio isn't going to be winning this thing, but he is going to pull a statistically significant number of votes away from the mad man.

agreed (4.00 / 2)
100%.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

[ Parent ]
If he stays on the ballot (4.00 / 1)
It's still possible that Lazio will be convinced to drop out and let Paladino take line D as well as line B.

[ Parent ]
He can't. (4.00 / 2)
Lazio isn't a lawyer. Therefore the only ways he gets off that ballot line are to die or move out of state, and moving out of state isn't a guarantee. See Powers, Jon.

[ Parent ]
Are you sure? (4.00 / 1)
Lazio got his J.D. at Washington College of Law at American University.  Are you sure he hasn't passed the New York bar exam?  He was also a Suffolk County prosecutor.

Yeah, I'm pretty sure he's a lawyer.

[ Parent ]
Lazio should drop out since (0.00 / 0)
there may be payback if he screws over Paladino by staying on the Conservative line, and then goes back to JP Morgan as a lobbyist just when the Republicans take over the House of Representatives.....

Just a thought.

Lazio is a registered Attorney since (0.00 / 0)

Enrico? (0.00 / 0)
I had no idea.

(Smacks head) (0.00 / 0)
You are correct, my bad.

latest poll seems to be an outlier!!! (4.00 / 1)
Nate Silver makes the same point about excluding Lazio from the Quinnipiac Polls. His latest election projections put the race at: 50.7% Cuomo, 32.0% Crazy Carl, 14.8% Lazio. Crazy Carl's primary bounce disappears with Lazio included on the ballot

It's time to call a spade a spade (4.00 / 2)
