SD-59: Republican vote to split three ways in November: Appleton endorsed by Democracy For America

by: Adama D. Brown

Mon Sep 27, 2010 at 19:30:08 PM EDT

Ladies and gentlemen, the news is in from the State Supreme Court: David DiPietro's name has been reinstated on an independent Tea Party line for the November election, bringing the number of Republican candidates back up to three. DiPietro, the Tea Party candidate; former Erie County Republican boss Jim Domagalski on the Independence and Conservative Party lines; and Patrick Gallivan as the Republican nominee.

Meanwhile the sole Democrat in the race, Cynthia Appleton, has been endorsed by Democracy for America in her quest to replace the retiring Dale Volker.

I don't have to tell you all that in a district where the Democrat lost to a unified Republican opposition by just 13,000 votes last cycle, a three way split is very significant.

You also need to trust me when I say that this could still easily go the wrong way. With Paladino motivating what's expected to be massive turnout out of Erie County, we need to get the word out and give Democrats a reason to come to the polls in November.

I've flogged this race here before, but this is now officially crunch time. Money is needed right now for direct mail, for radio ads, and for TV ads.

This district is our best chance of picking up a seat in western New York, and arguably one of our best chances in the entire state. To do that, we need tens of thousands of dollars at the least. Pull out your wallet, fire up every donor you know, send this out to all your connections. Because none of us want to wake up on November 3rd thinking that we could have changed things if we'd just done a little bit more.

Good news, (0.00 / 0)
picking up Volker's seat would be sweet.

But it seems to me that a Buffalo suburban drawn-to-be-Republican Senate district will go 2-1 at least for Paladino, and that Appleton is no cinch, even with three opponents splitting the Paladino vote.

GOTV is the key here, as everywhere else.

This is actually (4.00 / 1)
A pretty damn Republican district that the D's have overpreformed in because Lord Volkemort just blew that hard. I think our best chance was beating him, but this is close second.

GOTV is one key, and that can only be done by giving voters a visceral negative reaction to Paladino. It may be worth the risk to go scorched earth here, not for the Governor's office's sake, but for the rest of the party's sake.

The other key to me is back-door propping up the DiPietro and Domalgowski campaigns. People need a reason to vote for them or they'll just sit on the ballot; people won't even know that they're Republicans.

I wish I could disagree with you. (4.00 / 1)
Erie County is going to be rough. All the more reason that I'm on here pestering people for money so that we can get the message out to more of our potential voters.

I really find it hard to believe that (0.00 / 0)
Domagalski is not exiting the race since he is a former Erie County Republican Party Chairman. Since he is an attorney, he can join Lazio on the Republican ticket for Supreme Court in the Bronx.

From his website:

"Jim is an attorney and partner with the law firm of Hiscock & Barclay, LLP.  He is the Managing Director of the firm's Buffalo office.  As a member of the firm's five member management committee, Jim supervises the firm's over two hundred attorneys and nearly four hundred employees."

Pat Gallivan is a former 2-term Erie County Sheriff. He has a base of support and will likely win in a district drawn to elect a Republican, but by a smaller margin than what would be expected.

Dale Volker lost Erie County to DiPietro in the 2008 primary and lost Erie County to the Democrat in the general. He only won the primary and general by running up margins in the rural part of the district. I believe that Gallivan will do much better than Volker in Erie County.

I don't think (0.00 / 0)
Domma the Hutt is much of a team player when it comes to Pat Gallivan...

I learned a lot (0.00 / 0)
Nice post. I learn something more challenging on different blogs everyday. It will always be stimulating to read content from other writers and practice a little something from their store. I'd prefer to use some with the content on my blog whether you don't mind. Natually I'll give you a link on your web blog. Thanks for sharing.
