NY-Gov: Paladino loses Dicker and the NY Post, big-time

by: devtob

Wed Sep 29, 2010 at 21:42:46 PM EDT

Today, Republican gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino and his campaign manager Mike Caputo almost came to blows with Fred Dicker, the dean of the Capitol press corps.

Dicker has covered Albany for more than 30 years, is the Murdoch NY Post bureau chief in Albany, and also has a daily one-hour talk show on WGDJ-AM and does analysis on WRGB, Channel 6.

He's relatively conservative, for New York, but he has expressed concern with Paladino's rhetoric, like calling former Republican Gov. George Pataki "a degenerate idiot" and comparing Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver to the Antichrist.

Today, he wanted to ask Paladino about his scurrilous charge that Democratic gubernatorial candidate Andrew Cuomo had cheated on his former wife.

And it got pretty nasty.

Details and video, below.

devtob :: NY-Gov: Paladino loses Dicker and the NY Post, big-time
Paladino and Dicker were at the Sagamore on Lake George for the Business Council's annual meeting. The confrontation occurred in a hallway there, and was captured on a cell phone video by Kaitlyn Ross of Capital Tonight.

The video shows Dicker asking Paladino what evidence he had for the Cuomo smear, Paladino threatening that he'll "take out" Dicker, then Caputo and another big guy pushing Dicker away from Paladino, with Caputo accusing Dicker of working for Cuomo and "kissing his butt."

It really has to be seen to be believed.

Paladino's thuggishness may appeal to the tea party minority, but most New York voters will be appalled by this latest example.

And, FWIW, it probably ensures that the Post, which usually endorses and campaigns on its news pages for Republicans, will take a pass on Crazy Carl.

Fortunately, this will become (4.00 / 5)
a big news story tomorrow.

Wow... just wow (4.00 / 5)
This guy makes John Sweeney look like a gentleman. No wonder Caputo and Stone are working for him. Three of the slimiest thugs in politics.

Thuggish, stupid, (4.00 / 3)
and unbelievably counterproductive. Dicker could have been their best friend.

If Paladino were a normal conservative Republican, (4.00 / 2)
Dicker and the Post would have been singing his praises every day.

But he's Crazy Carl, who stomps on today's positive story about getting the Conservative line with a thuggish outburst that will be the major Paladino news tomorrow.

"Thuggish, stupid, and unbelievably counterproductive." (4.00 / 4)
Isn't that a summary of Carl Paladino?

Good Call (4.00 / 2)
From today's article

The Paladino smear signaled a new low in a campaign already oozing mud less than two weeks in.

Don't worry.... (4.00 / 2)
as the old saying goes, "You ain't seen nothing yet!"

Too bad A. we're not going to get honest debate on what needs fixing in New York and B. the press will get distracted by the sideshow going on.

They dropped Jim Russell... (4.00 / 2)
...yet they're keeping Paladino.

If you're a Republican running for office, you don't want to have the slightest appearance that you're behind Crazy Carl's Candidacy.

If it was just Jim Russell (4.00 / 3)
they could get away with saying it was just one crazy guy whose views we don't endorse. But Russell's sort of racism and Paladino's sort of racism and sexism are clearly becoming the default position of the modern day Republican Party. It's not just one guy.

[ Parent ]
I don't understand the hypocrisy (0.00 / 1)
Cox is firmly behind Paladino, but he was with the Westchester GOP when they tried to boot Jim Russell. It doesn't make sense. Paladino is worse that Russell, IMHO. Russell is a calculating racist, Paladino is an unhinged racist.

Just like Christmas... (4.00 / 1)
...the October surprise moment comes a wee bit earlier each year.

:-)

The Next 5 Weeks (4.00 / 2)
Will be very interesting and I can't wait for the debates between Cuomo and Paladino.  Hope this helps increase Cuomo's lead over Paladino.

On another front, families and especially children should be off limits in politics.  And really, who gives a crap if Cuomo cheated on his wife.  What I care about is the job he's done as AG and for NY State.

At least the next 5 weeks should be entertaining (4.00 / 1)
Paladino needs to handle these things privately. The Buffalo News Story about someone going to his daughters house, taking mail out of the box and photographing the mail is very disturbing and  maybe a federal crime.

Carl is wealthy enough to hire security.

But the comments about Cuomo is dumb and it was Mrs. Cuomo that cheated on Andrew with his pal.

If you want to enter politics for an appointed or elective office, you have to have a thick skin and realize that you will find out how horrible of a person you really are.
