Carl and Fred hit Brooklyn

I don't know that anyone's made this connection yet, but it's noteworthy that Brooklyn, America's hometown, has been the scene for two extravagant displays of bigotry in the last few days.

One, obviously, was Carl Paladino's foray into the fringes of Chasidic Williamsburg with his charming message about dysfunctional gays.

The other, and this one slipped under the radar, was the most recent blighting of the the Borough by Fred Phelps' anti-gay, anti-Jew, anti-everything-of-goodness-and-value Kansas hate church.

Why does this coincidence of timing and place matter?

Because it shows the underlying mindset of the bigot. It's not that big of a step from declaring LGBT Americans 'dysfunctional' and not something you want your children exposed to to picketing funerals and synagogues. The only distinction is one of degree.

That's what New Yorkers need to consider before casting their ballots in November.

Fortunately, Upstate can't elect the governor alone. (0.00 / 0)

Not without the help of a decent number of people downstate, which they won't get. You wouldn't know it from the number of those hideous orange signs up here, but there just aren't enough yahoos north of Westchester to elect this guy governor. There just aren't. And that's a good thing.

Being from Amherst, you probably know this at least as well as I do. The Steaming Pile Poll Of Pulling Numbers Out Of My Ass Based On Yard Sign Observation (TM) tells me that Paladino will probably carry more than a few Upstate counties, but not by enough to win. The SPPOPNOOMABOYSO isn't a scientific poll by any means, but it does produce some pretty scary numbers on a superficial level.

As I said, there aren't enough yahoos up here (if the shoe doesn't fit, you don't have to get all offended) to throw the election to a nutjob like Paladino, no matter how mad he gets. But if acknowledging the existence of yahoos in Upstate NY upsets the balance of the Force, I humbly apologize.

We've had our Cuomo signs for barely over a week. The Paladino people have had their signs for about 6+ months. It's kind of natural they're going to have a lead on us.
