NY-Gov: Libertarians Make A Laughing Stock of Paladino

Libertarian Gubernatorial CandidateUses Dino-Dicker Confrontation to Hilariously Frame His Issues

Remember a few weeks ago when Carl Paladino flew off the handle in a confrontation with New York Post political guru Fred Dicker?  And do you recall the observations earlier this week that it might be the Libertarian's year thanks to the alienation of 'Dino supporters as a result?

Libertarian Gubernatorial candidate Warren Redlich has just posted what I consider to be the most hilarious political satire video of the year to take advantage of the fallout.

Just for the record, that's not really Fred Dicker in the video.  Redlich confirmed that it's a fellow LP activist.  But I still think this is a classy dig at Paladino.

Even more classier, Redlich did what Paladino should have done in real life by issueing a public "apology" to Mr. Dicker for the fictitious indcident:

In light of the recent confrontation between journalist Fred Dicker and Governor candidate Warren Redlich, the Redlich campaign today issued the following statement:

We regret that the incident turned ugly. "I apologize for losing my temper, and for my colorful language," Mr. Redlich said.

Honestly, I was laughing my ass off.  Finally, I thought, a candidate willing to stick it to Paladino the way it should be done: with humor.  Paladino is not worth taking seriously, and many of his antics, while patently offensive, are also laugh-out-loud stich-worthy.

I also like the way Redlich uses the dig to frame his two main sticking points agianst his two strongest opponents, Paladino himself and our guy, Andrew Cuomo.  I had the pleasure of eating lunch with Mr. Redlich earlier this week.  My main intention was to simply get face time with another Albany area attorney who might need my services as a paralegal.  But he's glad enough to have a firm that's shrinking, and was even more proud to say, and I quote: "I'm the only candidate who's not full of crap."

I like how he ran with this so much, that I'm even going to give you the rest of the release below the fold; he ties the joke into some serious questions for both major party candidates.

Soundpolitic :: NY-Gov: Libertarians Make A Laughing Stock of Paladino
Despite the negative nature of the moment, the Redlich campaign continues to support its statements about Andrew Cuomo and Carl Paladino.

Andrew Cuomo has received over $51 million in special interest contributions over the course of his political career. In this election cycle Cuomo has taken nearly 900 separate contributions of $10,000 or more. This includes a $55K contribution from a small parking lot at 318 West 37th Street in Manhattan. The parking lot is owned by West 37th Street Parking LLC, a Delaware corporation of unknown ownership. If Mr. Cuomo really wants to promote transparency in campaign finance, he should start by telling the voters of New York who's behind the parking lot.

The evidence is available at:
http://www.elections.state.ny....

Meanwhile, the supposedly conservative Carl Paladino has given thousands of dollars to liberals including Al Gore, John Kerry, and David Paterson.

When the 2008 presidential primary season was heating up, when Warren Redlich was giving money to conservative Ron Paul, and when other conservatives were supporting Mike Huckabee and Mitt Romney, Carl Paladino gave the maximum contribution to that well-known conservative, Hillary Rodham Clinton.

When the health care debate was brewing, Carl Paladino gave $1000 to another well-known conservative, Chuck Schumer, five days after Schumer announced his support for "public option."

The evidence is available at:
http://fec.gov/finance/disclos...

Finally, we have the evidence that Warren Redlich is the only candidate in the Governor's race who is not full of "it".

Feel free to confirm or deny any Mr. Redlich's accusations in the comments.  Personally, I was leaning towards Cuomo...but I'm now probably voting for Warren.  I'm a weirdo, here: I always split my ticket.  But only if it doesn't hurt my own party.  I don't see Cuomo really needing my help this year.  I am confident he will not noly be the next Governor, but that he will be one of the best the state has ever seen.

But I also care about the health of third parties in New York, and while I'm a Democrat I do feel that the Green and the Libertarian parties both have better stances on a few of my pet issues better than the more centrist-dominated Democratic party does.  This year, I think it's Redlich who needs my help.  With Paladino bleeding support from the very people apt to support Redlich as well, this could be the year that the Libertarian Party gets some clout in New York.  And for me, that's a good thing.

To get the same reasoning right from Redlich's mouth, check out his candid interview earlier this week on Captiol Tonight.  And then, stay tuned...I've a hunch the Redlich is going to do something this year, and the lead-up is already interesting and entertaining thanks to his good humor.  Enjoy!

I appreciate the balanced and reason perspective as usual.  Gotta get you on Ameros Radio again, maybe as commentary after the debates!

Ladies and gentlement, Jesse is the frontman to The Ameros, the best political indie-rock band in the Albany area.  Jesse's referring to Ameros Radio on Blogtalk, which combines the undergrounds of music and political activism of all stripes the way few others do.  I strongly recommended visiting the links to check them out.

And of course, I'll come on back anytime!

are useful idiots for conservatives and for corporatists.

so touchy alb-lay (4.00 / 1)
you might find we're actively intelligent and engaging once you put the scissors down . . .

understanding the average political engagement of progressive activists as dems is to mercilessly slam the other side

keep in mind the libertarians have never sent our kids off to war or imposed a tax

we seek voluntary human interaction without coercion or violence . . . and find government utopian

Accepting the legitimacy of government force for your conception of the polity is to be admonished.

did some of your reply get cut off? (4.00 / 1)
Also, I'm not touchy.  I simply tried to reduce my feelings about libertarians down to the fewest number of words possible.  The result was the comment that you see above.

I like short comments.  But if you want me to ramble, I'd be happy to.

My comment is not about libertarians individually.  Hell, I'll have a beer with ya anytime.  My comment is about the end result of bringing libertarian ideology into politics.  Libertarians want the same things as conservatives and corporatists, a weak, ineffectual government.

Me, I care about the quality of people's lives.  And people's lives are improved by having access to healthcare, by having clean air and water and land, by having a voice in government.  On and on and on.

But libertarian ideology, when put into practice, is opposed to those things.  "Government shouldn't do this, government shouldn't do that.  The private sector can provide all of that."  In the real world, insurance companies leave people out of the system, polluters get away with as much as they can, and only the wealthy get heard by our representatives.  That's where libertarian ideology leads.

I'm the touchy one around here, dammit! (0.00 / 0)
And I'm the one who pours out the most vinegar.  Everybody knows that :-)  That's why I chose the handle "Soundpolitic."  I like to think that I'm sounding off with sound positions...but those who think I'm an asshole can interpret the name as a not-so-clever metaphor for a common noise maker.  I'm quite proud of it.

I'm recommending both of your comments because I feel that layman's statement that "Libertarians are useful idiots for conservatives and corporatists" is, in fact, true.  I have a certain interpretation of the statement.  But I also think Esun67's comment (which does look incomplete) was on the right track.  I like this in particular: "keep in mind the libertarians have never sent our kids off to war."

We liberals and progressives write off libertatirans at our own peril because they are useful idiots to conservatives and corporatists.  By your logic, layman, you are condoning that we ignore that which the other side can make use of.  I prefer to think that the libertarian is already halfway to being progressive.  In fact, I find that the libertarian ideology presents the most useful debate because so many of our positions overlap.

I don't want a massive military or all these wars.  But how long have been waiting for "progressive" Democrats to bring our troops home?  A Libertarian would have none of it, wouldn't hedge and weave or be wishy-washy just to win or bring in donations.  That's what Democrats are still doing after nearly a decade fucking around getting all sorts of people killed for no good fucking reason in the Middle Fucking East.  I like the way Libertarians have the stones to take a stand on this.  Democrats could learn a thing or two about this.

I also think that the anti-prohibition element of the libertarian ideology is correct.  In fact, it makes a lot of progressives look like useful idiots.  Useful in that their insistence that controlled substances should be illegal.  Only an idiot would advocate for laying the groundwork for a violent and lucrative black market that treats addicts like criminals.  The only reason "progressive" Democrats don't come out and support full legalization and decriminalization of marijuana is because they are fucking weenies who are worried they'll lose "moderate" and "conservative" Democrats.  Sprout and pair and take a stand, that's what I say to my party, and until they do so I'm going to actually follow through on that threat and pull a fucking lever in the same direction my principles tell me to.

(OK, fine, I'll fill in a circle from now on, but that's beside the point).

Plus, if you talk to enough Libertarians, your'e more likely to find instant agreement rather than knee-jerk disagreement.  You'll quickly find that libertarians don't like the idea of money as free speech either, and don't think that corporations should be able to control our legislators, and also vehemently disagree with the provisions of the Patriot Act and the TARP.  I'm all about that as a progressive Democrat.  What kind of party are we that doesn't seek to find common ground sometimes?  Yes, the libertarians usually go a little far when it comes to laissez-faire economics, but this can be debated the same way conservative Democrats and liberal Democrats seek to find the correct balance of industry regulation necessary to ensure a strong economy.

You don't just write them off.  Republicans are the ones who are brainwashed into that kind of thing.  They wouldn't support a Democratic idea if it meant finding a cure for cancer.  We shouldn't be taking that approach to any of the third parties.  They all have ideas that, once considered and debated, can easily lead to the solutions that work for all of us.

On my own blog (4.00 / 1)
I have a link to another blog which is written by a libertarian.  He and I have regular "conversations" between our blogs about various areas, and there are a number of thing where we turn out to agree, others where we've "agreed to disagree," and sometimes we end up splitting the difference.  It's a lot more civil, thought-provoking, and interesting than much of what passes for "conservative" or "progressive" on some of the blogs.

Unconvinced. (0.00 / 0)
In your hypothetical libertarian-progressive scenario, you may want to celebrate the return of our troops from overseas with some newly-decriminalized weed.  But you won't be able to, because you will be too busy arguing against the libertarian efforts against healthcare reform.  Also, you will have to argue against libertarian efforts to limit the government's regulation of, say, hydrofracking.  Too, you will have to argue against libertarian efforts to weaken whatever pathetic financial regulations exist for our destructive big banks.

Libertarian ideas are super.  But that's exactly where they begin and end - as ideas.  Expecting any kind of political action or political change using libertarian ideas, or some phantom libertarian voter groundswell, is a fool's game.

WTFU (0.00 / 0)
I've never been too busy to argue with conservatives or fellow progressives.  Why would I be too busy to argue with libertarians, who at least agree with us progressives on some key points?  And believe you me, I've never been too busy to, er, celebrate.  So, lame excuse.

A progressive who shies away from debate will soon become a conservative.  I got this way because I demanded that I question my own political ideology, and continue to do so.  Which presently leads me to conclude the same thing this Buffallo columnist has and this race is now a choice between Howie Hawkins and Warren Redlich for me.  We need a third party to start doing well so that either it comes to power and does better than DINO or so it snaps the Democratic Party out of it and they actually become a progressive party.  In fact, if you look at the history of the Democratic party, that's exactly what happened during the last big progressive movement at the turn of the century.  I expect history to repeat itself.

And I expect a better showing for the Libertarians this year.  Paladino is just nuts and Redlich is appealing to those voters he's turning away.  Redlich did quite well at the debate and his media coverage is only increasing, probably because slow newspaper reporters are finally realizing what this quick blogger already has: that a majority of Americans say we need to develop third parties.  They might actually follow through on that this year by voting for them.

Fred "F U" Dicker (0.00 / 0)
Is not a newbie when it comes to making himself the news rather than reporting it.  People who are not his friends and colleagues refer to him as "FU" because he fits into that category of individual who easy offends people the minute he opens his mouth.

If that's the way it is... (0.00 / 0)
...than I can honestly say I want to be like Fred.

It's my experience that the people who get pissed off at me the second I open my mouth are almost always in one of two camps:

1) They are conservatives with brains who realize that what I'm saying is right and would rather get mad at me than realize it, or

2) They are just too stupid to understand the words I'm stringing together, and this upsets them.

Plus, I love "offending" people, because frankly, such a thing cannot be done.  People can take offense to something, but that's their energy being spent, not mine.

The fact is that Dicker does some good reporting, he gets the inside scoop, and he's not afraid to confront asshole politicians.  My favorite story is of him following Hiram Monserrate into the men's room while he was being suspended.  A politicians has nowhere to run from Fred Dicker and that's the way every journalist should be striving to make the politicians feel.
