NY-20: Fighting back on health care

by: devtob

Given the withering attacks on "Obamacare" from the right-wing media machine and their political confederates, the conventional wisdom for Members of Congress who voted for health care reform is to keep quiet about it.

Especially in purple districts like NY-20.

Rep. Scott Murphy is not keeping quiet, here's his latest ad, "The Truth Behind Repealing Health Care":

More, below.

devtob :: NY-20: Fighting back on health care
Here's the script:

"Time for a reality check.

Chris Gibson wants to repeal the health care law.

Chris Gibson would let insurance companies go back to denying coverage for pre-existing conditions.

He would let them restore lifetime limits on coverage.

Chris Gibson would eliminate mandatory coverage for preventive care like mammograms and colon screenings.

And seniors would pay more for prescription drugs.

Chris Gibson.  He's for the insurance industry, not you."

Now that's what I'm talking about.

The provisions in the health care law mentioned in the ad are overwhelmingly popular, and a majority in NY-20 favor the entire law.

A recent Siena poll of NY-20 found that 44 percent are with Gibson and the insurance industry in favoring repeal, while 50 percent agree with this: "Although it may not go far enough, I'd like to see the health care reform legislation fully implemented as soon as possible."

The ad also is great politics because it will help energize the allegedly dispirited Democratic base.

Tea partiers are still frothing about the health care law, but in NY-20 and most of the country, they are a very conservative minority of the electorate and will be voting Republican this year as they always have.

IMO, more Democratic Members of Congress who voted for HCR should disregard the conventional wisdom and proudly explain their vote, and how the Republicans' repeal will screw their constituents.

Murphy's ad made national news (4.00 / 3)
at the Huffington Post.

The spot is a rarity in this cycle: a Democrat using health care reform not only as a sales pitch, but also as a bludgeon to hold over the head of his repeal-oriented challenger.

My prediction (4.00 / 2)
Murphy will win his race and the lion's share of dems who ran scared from HCR will lose.

Sticking it to the CW (4.00 / 1)
That's what Murphy's been about since he won the special election.

Murphy's represented the district well, (4.00 / 2)
if somewhat less progressively than we would like.

But that's who he is, a venture capital guy who helped small businesses get started and/or grow.

That defies the CW that Democrats know nothing about creating real private-sector jobs.

And is a real difference between Murphy and Gibson, who knows nothing at all about creating real private-sector jobs.

So many freakin' ads in this race (4.00 / 1)
Makes you wonder if Price Chopper is still open for business.

I really hope Murphy can pull this one out.  He's obviously one of the Republican Party's biggest targets.  So I'm glad he's championing this.  Murphy was instrumental in getting it passed.  It's only right that his re-election should be instrumental in destroying forever the myth that this bill is unpopular and not in the public interest.

I just think it's a shame we have a culture that bases all of it's decisions on freakin' commercials.  The only reason Gibson wins this thing is if he basically runs enough ads to convince enough fools there's a King Kan sale at the ballot box on November 3rd.

agree with this post (0.00 / 0)
and shame on other Dems for not doing the same.  Who else is going to explain, in simple, bullet point fashion what the dangers of repeal are?  The media?  Uh, no.

The reform we got is not the reform I would have chosen, but dammit, people need to understand that it will end up benefiting a lot of people.  And the "death panel" folks have received too much attention.  Good for Murphy for presenting the high points.
