NY-GOV: The shortest possible summary of the debate.

by: Adama D. Brown

Tue Oct 19, 2010 at 14:46:29 PM EDT

I didn't get to watch the debate, since it was only on YNN which Dish Network doesn't get. But I listened to some of it online, and read several summaries, all of which pretty much reinforce my first impression: that it consisted of Andrew Cuomo standing on a stage for an hour with six total lunatics.

I know that Paladino's strategy for this debate was to avoid letting himself talk, which seems to be his worst enemy, while hopefully getting the left wing of the party and anyone stuck on identity politics to attach to another candidate. Unfortunately for him, he blended right into the crowd. A crowd made of kooks.

According to all the conversation in my office today (4.00 / 5)
the debate can be summed up in 2 lines...

"RENT"S TOO DAMN HIGH!!!"

and

"the career politicians in Albany are the biggest whores in this state. I might be the only person sitting on this podium qualified to deal with them."

RENT.... (4.00 / 3)
IS TOO DAMN HIGH!

(sorry)

And the facial hair is 2 damn weird. (4.00 / 1)

At the very least (4.00 / 4)
the other candidates besides Paladino provided some entertainment.  I wasn't aware that the state had a "rent is too damn high" party, but now that I am, I'm damn glad we have one.

there seems to be a consensus building (4.00 / 3)
...around the proposition that rent is just...TOO..... DAMN.... HIGH... Andrew Cuomo weighed in in favor of that last night, as well.

I don't know if I was hearing wrong... (4.00 / 3)
but I thought McMillan was constantly confusing billion and trillion in what he said the size of the surplus he could create was.

What's a zero (4.00 / 4)

The debate was on radio and was interesting to hear. (4.00 / 2)
I am pro choice when it comes to electing governors and I did like that I could hear 7 messages.  The candidate that I like did well, but who knows if he is going to get elected.  The debate was on free radio throughout the state, even though I have YNN.

My Debate "surprise" (4.00 / 1)
I watched the entire debate on the internet (wasn't easy to find!) and found to my surprise that the candidate who did the best job, clearly articulated his positions and made a good case for election was the Libertarian, Warren Redlich. I'm a staunch Democrat, have no Libertarian leanings at all, but was very impressed with Redlich's courtesy, respect, intelligence and ability to articulate the issues and his proposals for addressing them. In researching him after the debate, I learned that he is also quite creative and thinks "outside the box," something that Albany could certainly use.  Cuomo didn't impress me much; his comments were canned and just what you'd expect of someone playing it safe.  Paladino did his usual shabby job of representing Western NY (most of us here HATE him). Too bad the comedic aspects of the debate took center stage.  It would have been nice to see some serious commentators pick up on Redlich's contribution following the event, but it looks like he got lost in the race to the cutting room floor.  If I weren't terrified that too many people voting for Redlich would ensure Paladino's win, he'd get my vote this year.

i just made a comment... (0.00 / 0)
...that should have included redlich as well, for the same reasons you cite.

that said, i know nothing about this guy other than this debate, so who knows...

Well, for starters (0.00 / 0)
Redlich has a useful website on where to not speed on the Thruway and other Upstate Interstates.

http://www.redlichlaw.com/traf...

Now you know 1 thing about Redlich other than this debate.

Speeding (0.00 / 0)
Well THAT's a website I need to consult LOL! I did say he was creative. :-)

i'll tell you what... (0.00 / 0)
...i'm watching the debate right now, and i might not vote for any single one of 'em for governor, but if you put mcmillan, charles barron, and howard hawkins together you could actually get a weird "justice league of governorship" that looks at least as good as cuomo and a whole lot better than ("i'm a performance art project") paladino.

by the way, all three also look like at least reasonably good candidates for congress, and i hope they consider giving it a shot.

The craziest moment (0.00 / 0)
It's just possible that the craziest move belonged to Carl Paladino after all.

You might have noticed someone crossing behind the candidates late in the debate, then crossing back the other way. It was Paladino, going to the bathroom.
