Bruno: Marriage Equality is "Dead on Arrival" in the Senate

by: phillip anderson

State Senate Majority Leader, and my dear friend, Uncle Joe Bruno has decided to kill Marriage Equality in New York for this session. I can't say that I'm particularly surprised given that Bruno is kind of a dick.

NY Gay Marriage Bill Declared 'Dead On Arrival' In Senate

The Assembly passed same-sex marriage legislation Tuesday night, but the state's highest ranking Republican vowed not to allow it to come to a vote in the Senate.

The bill passed the Democratically controlled Assembly 85-61.

...

The bill now moves on to the Senate.

But with the current session to end on Thursday, Senate Majority Leader Joseph L. Bruno (R) repeated his pledge not to allow the bill to come to a vote in the GOP controlled Senate.

Bruno declared the bill "dead on arrival" Tuesday night.

"We not doing gay marriage by Thursday that's for sure, or this year," declared Bruno.

Oy. Oh, and you've got to love this quote from Assemblyman Ted Haggard Kolb:

"I do feel threatened. I do feel harmed," said Assemblyman Brian Kolb (R-Canandaigua). "It's a direct challenge to me and how I was brought up."

I guess he can thank Uncle Joe for killing this bill. Otherwise he'd be forced to marry a gay dude. Or something.

I gotta say (0.00 / 0)
...if I were the wife of an R legislator, I'd be wondering about the sexuality of my spouse. If this dude feels threatened by gay marriage, seriously, how confident is he of his own sexuality?

Odd discussion (0.00 / 0)
Kolb was truly inane in his comments on the bill, but some of the other Assemblymembers were not much better.

Assemblymember Townsend blathered on about baptism and kept asking questions of Danny O'Donnell about how the bill would impact baptism (answer - it had no impact, none at all).

Assemblymember Michael Benjamin strongly opposed the bill, stating we were entering the twilight of civilization (though he ended up abstaining, which seems odd given his remarks).

Assemblymember Barbara Clark spoke twice and made little sense either time, first talking about how important equality was and then stating that she opposed the bill.  Her second remarks related to four children without fathers, though no one in the room seems to know to which four children she was referring.

Despite some of the really ill conceived arguments against the bill, some of the legislation's proponents were very articulate, including three Republicans (Miller, Scozzafara and Sayward).  Democratic standouts included Assemblymembers  Brodsky, Hevesi, Lavine and Lentol and Danny O'Donnell.

I wonder if there is a transcript of all the remarks anywhere.  I know I would like to get a better sense of what some of the members were saying, especially those who didn't seem to have much of a structured argument (maybe it will make more sense in a written format, though I doubt it).

"Direct challenge" just what Kolb needs (0.00 / 0)
I'll pass on the psychological analysis, but what I would love to see is a "direct challenge" to Kolb, the way he was brought up, and his assembly seat .  ASAP.

yea....i figured (0.00 / 0)
its no surprise bruno is opposed to gay marriage. however, after looking at the assembly votes, and then watching some of the statements made by democrats...im appalled. sandy galef? ruben diaz jr? aurlia greene, the president pro tempore of the assembly? ALL NO. very very sad for democrats.

in the senate it would be the same thing. you know that the upstate dems would show no courage whatsoever, and vote it down based on politics.
