NY-25: Goodbye Congressman Maffei

by: BingChester

Tue Nov 23, 2010 at 16:14:18 PM EST

Dan Maffei just conceded in his race against Anne Marie Buerkle.  He becomes the sixth New York seat to turn Republican.  I don't know about you but this loss hurts me more than any other Congressional loss in New York, as Maffei was a progressive, effective, and intelligent representative with a bright future who didn't run away from his record.  I certainly hope he runs again in 2012 against one of the bigger loons elected throughout the state.  Maffei's concession statement, out of respect to him, is over the fold.
BingChester :: NY-25: Goodbye Congressman Maffei
I am deeply and forever grateful for the opportunity to serve you during the past two years. When I won the Congressional seat, I pledged to give it my all everyday and I did just that.  I came home every weekend, stayed focused on local issues while supporting national policies beneficial to our region, and did my best to bring our troops home safely from Iraq and Afghanistan.
I served every day honored to live in a community where a shy kid of modest means from a proud Syracuse family and a graduate of the Syracuse public schools could grow up to earn the trust of his community to represent you in Congress. And I learned from you every day, listening to your stories and working tirelessly on your behalf.

My staff both in Washington and in Upstate New York was terrific. I helped them assist thousands of you with challenges ranging from not getting fair treatment from insurance companies and banks to getting life-saving Veterans benefits to keeping businesses open.

The electorate may have changed tremendously from 2008 to 2010 in terms of who turned out to vote but I kept my pledges to the people who elected me and I will forever be proud of that.  Not only do I not apologize for my positions on the stimulus, the health care bill, financial reform, and the credit card bill, but my only regret is that there were not more opportunities to make healthcare more affordable to people and businesses and get more resources to the region for needed public projects - particularly transportation and public schools.

I am also deeply proud of my commitment to energy reform and mitigating global climate change. Thank you again to the experts and concerned citizens who stood by me.  Denying the clear facts and need for action on this issue either out of political expediency or plain ignorance hurts our local economy and threatens our planet.

I make no apologies, except to my friends, supporters, and staff for the fact the final outcome was not what we wanted.  I congratulate Congresswoman-elect Buerkle and her supporters and family.  I wish her luck in the new Republican majority.

I made it to Congress - my dream - because of all the great Upstate New Yorkers who, like me, care so deeply about our future.  And while the dream was short-lived, my gratitude is eternal.

this one hurts (4.00 / 5)
maffei was definitely one of the good guys.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Hope he runs again in 2 years (4.00 / 3)
He's a real class act.

Great idea (4.00 / 3)
How many Republicans who lost in 2006 or 2008 came back to run again?  Some of them are back in Congress.  We should do the same thing.

that's what my significant other (4.00 / 1)
suggested to me at dinner last night...as residents of the 25th District, it's pretty said that we finally had someone representing us in Washington, for a change, instead of the Republican misrepresentatives who have purchased their way to office here in the past.

Unless Maffei decides to run again (or, perhaps, even if he does)...Driscoll seems like a good, credible alternative for Democrats the next time.

While Maffei was much closer to my political viewpoints and received my vote each time he ran, he was never a very "personable" person; in fact, after working as a volunteer on his 2008 effort, his campaign never acknowledged my contribution nor invited me to the victory party they had later on (personally, it doesn't matter to me, but it makes me wonder how many other people who helped him get elected were virtually ignored immediately upon his getting elected). Maffei seemed to have a poor knack for "public relations" (oddly enough, since he was once a professional public relations practitioner). He also didn't seem to be a good manager of resources (if People are the most important resource of a campaign that never came across...at least not to me; in addition, while Buerkle received a massive $400,000 infusion from Rove's shadowy group in the last couple of weeks of the election, that only raised her overall total to about $950,000-$1 million, if news reports so far are correct; Maffei is reported to have spent $2.7 million.)

Another possible candidate in 2012: Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner.

Please elaborate: (0.00 / 0)
one of the bigger loons elected

I didn't see this one coming :-(
don't know anything abt Buerkle.

She seems just as loony... (0.00 / 0)
...as the rest of them.  Same bullshit on her site as all the Republican anarchists.  She's a deficit hawk who thinks Reagan was wonderboy and an anti-government hound who thinks FDR destroyed the country.  Standard fare for the loony bin.

[ Parent ]
she's a radical, anti-abortion extremits and climate denier, (4.00 / 1)
among other things; she once belonged to the radical terrorist anti-abortion group (terrorist anti-abortion group, in my humble opinion) that convicted anti-abrtionist Randall Terry once ran; she has also flatly stated that she's unconvinced about global warming. These are both pretty extremist opinions in a middle-of-the-road district like this...at least to me. In fact...these were both reported, but the Maffei campaign never seemed to capitalize on those very well.

Capitalizing on Republican anarchism (4.00 / 1)
I'm saying it again, this is my big point:  We should be hammering home the message that these Republicans are actually anarchists.

They are anti-government this, anti-government that, the word has an incredible negative connotation, and they've been employing the same tactic very successfully by calling all Democrats "socialist" for, oh, just past century now.  If this frame doesn't get picked up by the Democratic party, it's like they are walking into a gun battle, having an AK-47 placed at their feet, and still deciding to use the BB Gun their grandma gave them for Christmas because it's better to play nice.

So repeat after me: The Republicans are anarchists.  The Tea Party wants anarchy.  Conservatives support anarchism.  Just keep saying that.  This is how messaging works in American politics.

Or we can just keep losing...
