| Flying somewhat below the radar but open to the public is the fact that Senator Kevin Parker has been on trial for his alleged assault against a NY Post photographer and his conduct in grabbing the photographer's camera and injuring him. Today it looks like Senator Parker's notorious bad temper has caught up to him, as he has just been found guilty of two misdemeanor charges of criminal mischief.
Liz says this carries a two year jail sentence, although I imagine Parker will appeal. But assuming that Parker does in fact serve a two year jail sentence, I can't see how he keeps the seat unless he gets a deferral of the sentence. Even though a misdemeanor conviction does not automatically vacate the seat, serving two years of jail while "serving" as a New York State Senator is a ridiculous proposition, even for the New York State Senate.
And we've already set a precedent with the Monserrate expulsion that if you commit a criminal assault, even a misdemeanor, you have forfeited the seat by your own conduct.
So if you ask me, the Senate has an obligation to expel Senator Parker. |
