End of the Year Poll: Who Was the Worst Albany Embarrassment of 2010?

by: Roatti

Thu Dec 30, 2010 at 19:25:02 PM EST

Hey TAPers- it's that time of year again.  Last year, you chose Pedro Espada as the biggest Albany embarrassment.  Thankfully, he lost his re-election bid and is now likely to serve several years in jail.  So who you pick for this certaily can have consequences!

As usual, only pols in the state government are included, so that is why the likes of Lee Zeldin or Charlie Rangel aren't included.  This year the nominees are:

Carl Paladino for being a racist, tea-party freakjob who brought political discourse in our state to new lows.  The fact that he even captured the Republican nomination shows how far the NY GOP has devolved into the fringe.  Luckily voters realized how dangerous he is and his 15 minutes of fame is now over.

David Paterson for intimidating a domestic violence victim from testifying against her alleged abuser, his aide DavidJohnson.  Paterson also lied about accepting Yankees World Series tickets as an illegal campaign contribution and was fined over $60,000 for doing so.  His actions in governing weren't much better.  He also vetoed a Hydrofracking moratorium and pardoned a man, John White, who had been convicted of commiting a hate crime murder.  All in all, I can't remember a politician so far in over his head in such a powerful position since W. Bush.

Rick Lazio for basing his entire campaign for governor on the hatred of Muslims.  His pathetic demagoguery has no place in the 21 century, or the 20th for that matter.  Bigots are losers and luckily, Lazio reaffirmed that.

John Sampson, Malcolm Smith, and the Senate Democratic Leadership for abusing the trust the voters put in the Senate Democrats in 2008.  We thought we were getting change when we flipped the chamber in 08 but the Senate Leadership quickly revealed their true colors, being almost as corrupt and clueless as the Republicans that we got them to replace, and thus gave voters absolutely no incentive to keep them in power.

Dean Skelos and the Republican Leadership for stymying much of the good policy Senate Democrats tried to implement, chiefly marriage equality.  Despite voting no on that, Skelos said he would bring it up for a vote if the GOP retook the chamber.  He got his wish, but somehow I don't see the GOP-led Senate passing marriage equality next year.

Richard Brodsky for being the only AG candidate to oppose the Cordoba House.  If his rhetoric was against any other religious or ethnic group in this country, he would have become a pariah.

Sheldon Silver, just for being Sheldon Silver.

Greg Ball for being the craziest person ever to hold elective office in this state and unfortunately getting elected to the Senate this year.

Ruben Diaz Sr for continuing to be a bigoted, homophobic stain on our party.

Carl Kruger for being a terrible, corrupt asshole who knocked his primary opponent off the ballot, thus ensuring that no accountability reaches him as usual.

Poll after the flip, and as usual, let me know if I'm forgetting anyone!

Come On Roatti (4.00 / 2)
I accidentially posted this on the wrong thread so I'm repeating it.
Why do we have to pick only one?  You should have allowed us to pick a minimum of 3 if not all.  Anyway I choose our wonderful Democratic leaders in the Senate who I would really like to kick in the rear because they caused us to lose the Senate majority and thereby we're not in a position to decide districts. Talk about stupidity, this crew takes the cake.

lol (4.00 / 1)
sorry about that.  Yeah, I made the same choice

I Voted for the Dem Leadership... (4.00 / 3)
....but I really wished I could have voted for "The Entire New York State Senate."

To borrow a line from Star Wars, you'll never find a more wretched hive of scum and villainy....except perhaps the Arizona State Legislature.

More Nominees (2.67 / 3)
1. Senator Neil Breslin for not knowing what is in his insurance bill and making a fool of himself on television when asked about it.

http://soundpolitic.blogspot.c...

2. Assemblyman Jack Quinn for being talked out of campaigning for the Conservative line via an Opportunity to Ballot primary. The Erie County Conservative Chair must have hypnotic powers or something on Quinn.  Jack Quinn lost the general election by 1,600 votes and Tim Kennedy received over 4,000 votes on the Conservative line, making the difference.

Quinn was overconfident on his last name (Thanks Dad) in a 2-1 Democratic SD where he only represented 25% of the 58th SD voters in the Assembly. Minor ballot lines count in these situations.

3. Senator Antoine Thompson (60th) for losing the most Democratic senate seat upstate which has a 35% Black voting population and 5-1 enrollment advantage. Thompson was so out of touch he showed a toll taker on the Grand Island bridge (which is in Erie County) his passport.

Memory lapses and campaign blunders worse than... (4.00 / 1)
hatemongering, witness tampering, conflict of interest in awarding racing franchise??

Surely you jest.  This isn't about looking silly, its about disgracing state government.

Two legitimate additions, although the offenses took place in previous years, the disgrace became matters of public record this year:

Joe Bruno, for many years one of the three men in a room, one of the three most powerful officials in the state, convicted of two felony corruption counts, May 2010.

Former Comptroller Alan Hevesi, sole trustee of the huge state pension fund, pled guilty to felony pay to play, October 2010.

Breslin's "memory lapse" (0.00 / 0)
was certainly embarrassing.  And a big one, at that.  So is his continued insistence at funding his campaigns with insurance and banking industry lobby.

However, the biggest embarrassment to me is the fact that just over 50% of Albany County Democratic voters gave this clown the nomination in spite of this "memory lapse."  I put that in quotations because it wasn't a "memory lapse."  The man was touting that his bill would cover everybody when in fact it only covered about 25% of people.  He said it over and over again (or, much more likely, some political or industry boss told him to say it over and over again) and then when he was put on the spot by it, he had to call an aide to double check it.

Also embarrassing, is the uncalled for troll-rating of comments, Albanius.  GOP RIP's comment simply made extra suggestions to add to the list.  It's clearly not spam (though this site is a fucking spam magnet lately) and it's clearly not a Republican or Tea Party troll comment.  If you want to disagree with the guy, you did so very well in your reply.  You don't have to hide rate it.  Yeesh.

Seeing as how Senator Breslin is Assistant Majority Leader, I'm voting for the Dem leadership as the years biggest embarrassment.

TR maybe harsh, but moderate reprimand not available (0.00 / 0)
The three individuals named embarassed themselves at worst, not state govt.

GOP_RIP's nominees as a set struck me as contrary to the values of what I have always regarded  as a progressive Democratic blog.  Two progressive Dems were attacked for lapses that were neither corrupt nor mean-spirited, and one Republican was called out for his good work helping to elect a Democrat in a close race.

Actually Bruno was convicted in Dec '09, sentenced May '10 (4.00 / 1)
...but the stench is still here.

[ Parent ]
Shelly. (4.00 / 1)
And anyone who votes for him for Speaker.

Others (4.00 / 2)
How about Mike Kaplowitz, for losing to Greg Ball?  He had to run one of the stupidest, most embarrassing campaigns to blow that one.

While we're on the subject, there's the DSCC for signing a huge contract with the Parkside Group -- the very same consultants who blew the Kaplowitz campaign.

How about the DSCC for losing control of the State Senate?  I know it was one of those years, but the money wasted on unwinnable campaigns, or on incumbents facing primary challenges, was a stupid waste.  Also, not one of the women they touted for challenging an incumbent Republican won her race.

Dave Mejias, for his total personal breakdown that may have killed his political career permanently.

I don't see Pedro Espada on the list; he has a modified Midas touch, being an embarrassment to anything he touches.

Finally an odd one, but I think appropriate:  Ed Koch.  This guy got a lot of press, but didn't accomplish a damn thing with his "NY Uprising."

You may not like Ball, but he is an effective politician who (0.00 / 0)
is very popular among his constituents.  If he picks the right issues (tort reform?) and keeps his nose clean, he might have state-wide potential.

The Senate debacle in '09 ensured a Republican take over.  Oddly, if Gov. Patterson had stayed in the Senate, he might well have been a strong enough majority leader to have kept that whole thing at a low boil.

The former governor is the NYS Jerry Ford.

That chain of events is another one to blame on Elliot Spitzer.

Easy vote for me (0.00 / 0)
The Senate Democratic "leadership" that, in so many ways, ruined the Democratic brand for that house of the Legislature.

Ball was the Worst for Hudson Valley (0.00 / 0)
Clearly, Greg Ball wins hands down in the Hudson Valley. But he's so slick that he has friends who pretend to be against him, but who actually help support his cause. One such is "PlanPutnam", more accurately know here as "ScamPutnam",which is run by a chronic liar and hypocrite known as Jeff Green. In public they pretend to be on opposite sides, but behind the scenes they meet up in  "extremist hell" where both the far right and far left come together in a netherworld of deceit. Green collects cash contributions from his brain dead followers who cannot see past their own noses. And the idiots actually send him the cash!
