NY-26: Another View On Konst

by: phillip anderson

Fri Feb 11, 2011 at 09:56:33 AM EST

Or, why I disagree with Dan. I'm deferring to the locals.

First and foremost, I'd like to urge anyone with the last name "Konst", and anyone pushing a "Konst" for any elected office in Western New York to lose my number, my email address, and my Twitter handle. I am absolutely appalled by the aggressive trial ballooning of Kathy Konst, who abandoned a pretty safe Democratic seat to go work for Chris Collins, setting up an almost impossible election campaign for Diane Terranova, thus paving the way for antidemocratic tea partier Dino Fudoli to win. (Konst left the legislative race too late for her name to be removed from the ballot, and litigation was required to do so. It was a colossal middle finger to the Democratic Party). The notion that Konst, who is working for an authoritarian Republican administration, might be authorized by the Democratic chairs of the counties touching NY-26 is beyond laughable. Erie County has the second-largest weighted vote in the process, and Lenihan wouldn't advance Konst - even under duress - any sooner than he'd advance Ray Walter. She was just embroiled in a mini-scandal just a couple of short months ago, for God's sake.

Within minutes of yesterday's Lee resignation, Konst loyalists were relentlessly pushing the notion that DCCC had already identified Konst as a front-runner for the NY-26 race, and that the chairs of the rural counties were either already behind a Konst candidacy, or were actively pushing for it. In my discussions throughout the day, I discovered that none of this was true. I'm sure they contacted DCCC, but there's no chance D-trip would go against the wishes of the party chairs. When I tried to put a lid on what was starting to be ignorant speculation by out-of-town media regarding Konst, I was met with aggressive good-cop, bad-cop pushback. (I had one Konst loyalist calling to try to reason with me while another threatened me with a defamation lawsuit - SIMULTANEOUSLY). All done! Good bye! Please don't ever contact me again! Have a nice day!

Buffalo Pundit's whole piece is well worth a read.

Not worth a read at all (1.33 / 3)
"BuffaloPundit" just doesn't have his facts straight.

The county leguslative seat was actually a safe Republican seat until Konst ran.

Regarding the beach house, the facts are as follows:

The house is not usable in the dead of winter, and last fall still required a lot of work. It had been on the market for a long time. When the Konsts decided to renovate their own house and needed a place to stay, they saw the listing and were also approached. They decided to put their own money into the needed work, which benefited the county. They would have been there for a short time, leaving behind a far more rentable place. Between liars and incompetent press reports, they lost thousands of dollars and never got the use of the place. It was the kind of digraceful attack that BuffaloPundit and others of his type specialize in.

BuffaloPundit is nothing more than a self-aggrandizing, fact-eschewing fraud, and no more worthy of our attention than others of that ilk, such as Sarah Palin, Michele Bachmann and Glenn Beck.

what- (4.00 / 2)
-thefuckever. enough of the ad hominem, k? feel free to disagree, but you can take the name calling and trash talk elsewhere.

no way would i let anyone lump you with palin, bachmann and beck. that's just fucked up.

knock it off.

TODAY is day one. It always is.

Where have you been, Phil? (2.00 / 2)
BuffaloPundit has been making ad hominem attacks on Kathy Konst; where was your outrage?

When some anonymous cretin was making ad hominem attacks against me -- on TAP -- where was your outrage?

BuffaloPundit is wrong on the facts and doesn't seem to care. The comparison is apt.

If you believe that Kathy Konst is not your cup of tea, that her willingness to work across the aisle when it gets things done is not a good thing, and that her ability to win races that no other Democrat ever could is an asset, fine. AmherstGuy, on my post, is supporting someone else, even though he accepts the facts, and I am fine with that.

But don't presume to attack me for demanding facts and truth, while defending a liar!

Hi, Dan. (0.00 / 0)
I don't know you, but I can tell you that I'm a resident of Erie County and I've met Kathy Konst numerous times.  I had a lot of respect for her before she went to work for Collins.

I'd like you to specifically point out what facts I'm "wrong" about.  In scanning all of the reportage about the Konst's aborted rental of the Wendt Beach home, I find nothing to indicate that they had renovated this county property on their own dime. That's so far the only fact you've accused me of being wrong about.

You'll note I'm not complaining about her work trying to bring about reform with Michele Iannello and Cindy Locklear. I thought that was a good effort.

I haven't made ad hominem attacks on Kathy Konst.  She just isn't in the running, and I've explained in great detail why that is.  Mostly it has to do with her behavior in leaving her legislative seat and the manner in which that was done.

You may be correct that she got that seat as the first Dem in some time, but you ignore that she came to office in the wake of a massive Republican-created fiscal crisis, and the Dems took a majority and did well overall that year.

So, like I said, I do know what I'm talking about, I've written about this stuff for about 8-9 years, and I don't need some fucking asshole from the city telling me I'm Beck/Palin/Bachmann.

So, either shut the fuck up or explain in exquisite detail, with citations and evidence, how it is that I've lied.

Asshole.

You write, "I find nothing to indicate that they had renovated this county property on their own dime." but your own (second) link in your own rant above says, "Konst is spending several thousand dollars of her own money improving kitchen amenities, which, aside from her appliances, will remain with the residence whenever she moves out."

That is, as you asked for, "specifically" a "fact" that you "are wrong about."

[ Parent ]
Why (0.00 / 0)
What are "kitchen amenities"?

Why are the Konsts busy spending money to "improve kitchen amenities" in a county-owned property?

Why did they use their connections to try to get a sweetheart deal on a year-round rental of county-owned beachfront property?

Incidentally, (0.00 / 0)
You intimated above that the Konsts put their "own money" into the renovations needed to make the Wendt house inhabitable year round.

The house is not usable in the dead of winter, and last fall still required a lot of work. It had been on the market for a long time. When the Konsts decided to renovate their own house and needed a place to stay, they saw the listing and were also approached. They decided to put their own money into the needed work, which benefited the county.

But in actuality, The Buffalo News reported,

Hornung said his Parks Department spent $36,000 to make the structure livable again. Meanwhile, Konst is spending several thousand dollars of her money improving kitchen amenities, which, aside from her appliances, will remain with the residence whenever she moves out.

Loughran sees the rate of $650 a month as a bargain when considering that even Hornung figured the residence could go for several hundred dollars a week during the summer.

Loughran also called it a "scandal".  Who's lying now, pal?

I'm going to hide this. BP is none of the things you claim.

Please don't, Michael.  I appreciate being called out by cretins.  I want the entire context of this to be posted and up so everyone can see.  I need to be able to link to this.  Thanks.

This is fucking hilarious (0.00 / 0)
I haven't been paying much attention to this, but then I saw the comments jump up in number and just had to check it out...

First thing I notice is that the same TAPper has uprated both sides of the initial barbed exchange between Dan and Phillip. That's side splitting to begin with!

Next, we have people becoming embroiled in mini-scandals.  Mini-scandals can embroil you now?  Mini-scandals over kitchen fixtures in a dinky beach home in Western New York? I know we just had a guy resign over a picture with his shirt off...but just how squeaky clean do you have to be these days?  Damn...this ain't exactly fucking expensive hookers in the ass with no rubber in posh hotels.  Hilarious!

Mmmmm...Western New York beachfront property...those people who go to sleep dreaming of the Carribean don't know what they're missing!  Fuck the Bacardi, break out the Genny Cream Ale!  This thread is that snarktastic, the material almost writes itself!

Also, I found it really fucking funny that buffalopundit called a County Executive who was elected democratically just a few years ago an authoritarian...on the same day the people of Egypt finally got rid of their actual authoritarian dictator of a few decades! I laughed my ass off!  An "authoritarian" who has members of the opposition party working for him?  Wow.  That guy's ruling with a rubber fist...

...this is too fucking easy!

Seriously, folks.  Governor Cuomo has yet to call a special election.  Nobody, I repeat, nobody, has declared a candidacy yet on either side of the aisle.  I've never, ever seen early speculation like this get so ridiculously heated amongst regular contributors who are clearly not suffering from cretinism given their previous body of work.

Just ignore this shit, watch the Grammys tonight or something to take your mind off it, and wait for somebody to declare a candidacy or date to be set before giving me another flame war to work my comedic magic on :-)

Hilarious, maybe. (0.00 / 0)
Soundpolitic - maybe read our blog about our Republican county executive and his efforts to do palpable harm to the urban poor and his attempts to rule without input from the county attorney, county legislature, and county comptroller.

And when you're done with that, you can take your "comedic magic" and shove it firmly and squarely up your anus.

Have a great day, and fuck all of you fucking out-of-the-area know-it-alls who know absolutely nothing about what's going on up here.  Seriously, it's ok if you don't CARE, but don't presume you KNOW.

Let me say (4.00 / 1)
While Alan and I may not agree on everything, I generally find his analysis to be on-point, and fairly fair, if not objective - which is rare for a partisan progressive blogger.

Having lived and worked (politically) in BFLO, I will also say his is the only political commentary I care to follow on a regular basis now that I have left - even though, again - we don't agree on everything.  You know why?  Because we don't HAVE to agree on everything to understand the concept of party and partisanship balanced against progressive responsibility, ethics, and reform - which is something this particular community purports to care about.

So it was pretty mindboggling to see the back and forth here.  And pretty sad.

While I have generally been off the grid for a while, I feel compelled to now share.  My view is his analysis is correct.  Konst is a nonstarter for the party leadership, and she simply won't be the candidate.  And if she was - she would get killed.

And yes, it's fine for folks to have their own opinions, but when balanced against an exceedingly credible source or authority, they should be accorded their appropriate weight - in this case, none.

As one who once fell into this trap of arguing in a very bad way with a fellow TAPer (4.00 / 1)
Let me just say that a group of outstanding progressives who I respect should not be bickering so divisively. We need to remain united against the corporatist who are sucking the life out of our state and country.
