Our Man In Madison

by: phillip anderson

Fri Mar 11, 2011 at 10:10:52 AM EST

That would be me, actually. I'll be in Madison, Wisconsin this weekend and I'll be wearing this Union Made Dropkick Murphy's shirt (with proceeds going to the Workers Rights Emergency Response Fund, btw.) that the mailman delivered yesterday.

I'll be blogging all weekend from Madison. Hope you'll stop by and check it out.

I feel enormously fortunate to be able to go. What's happening there and in state houses around the country is enormously important and I can't wait to be a part of it.

Now let me pack this bag and get to my butt to LGA...

We're still fighting this fight in Ohio - only its worse, because it includes Policemen and Firefighters.

Please do whatever you can to defeat Ohio Senate Bill 5

Please make sure that the you tell the people in Wisconsin that we here in New York stand with them and Amhurst, if you know anyone in Ohio make sure you do the same. THIS FIGHT IS NOT OVER.

I actually moved to Ohio about 2 years ago to get my MBA, and stayed when I found a job in Consumer Packaged Goods marketing - a field that barely exists in upstate NY but is plentiful here in Columbus. I have a number of friends who are teachers and cops and its incredibly distressing to watch them fear for their jobs, salaries, job security, and benefits.

As in most states, there are thousands of unemployed teacher-hopefuls who are recent college graduates, most of whom would jump at $22,500 because it means they have a job in their field. My friends who were hired at 30K and 40K will be asked to take that salary or be fired, and teachers who make 80K (an absolutely fair salary for a good teacher in my opinion) will be fired in favor of cheap fresh meat.

In my MBA program we learned this as "supply and demand" and "the efficiency equilibrium". But fortunately my liberal arts undergrad program taught me to question everything...

That's Why (0.00 / 0)
Bloomberg doesn't want to retain teachers on a seniority basis.  Young teaches and those just out of college, are paid less but older teachers who have been on the job for 15, 20 or more years are making much more.  Using the fact that we should only retain the "best" and throw the rest away is another method to getting rid of seniority.  Think about it, a new teacher will make half of what a teacher with seniority has and because many of them are desperate for a job they'll take one for less, with less benifits just to get their foot in the door and start their careers.
